Introducing Soul Music To New Ears
Good post Paul.... well said! I was at an event last month that we promote outside the "usual" circles. There was a bunch of youngsters there who were obviously enjoying the music and spent the majority of their time dancing despite every record being new to them. At the end of the night they asked me where they could hear more of the same.... when I told them, and just how many events there are, they were a bit puzzled as to why it is so hard to find out about them!! There is a thread in the events forum where James Trouble said something similar!! What you suggest about promoters widening their flyering net is spot on mate, but the other thing that needs to change is the closed shop mentality of a lot of soulies, as Stuart has suggested above. You carry on ranting, as you put it! You and your mates disprove the comfy, excuse laden theories put forward by so many! Dave

Introducing Soul Music To New Ears
Couldn't agree more about spreading the word, but the best way to get newbies to enjoy the music is to get them to come to a night, where they feel welcome, and enjoy the music in context. I play at a couple of places where a "mixed crowd" is encouraged but sadly some events, and a lot of people on the scene are not particularly welcoming to newcomers.

I know Jamie and Rich well mate... top blokes Not so much doubts about the music as misgivings about the scene....and as I go out twice most weekends, travelling a long way to attend events, I'll let you judge whether I'm "in or out"

Sorry Mandy, but the topic title also included a reference to soul snobbery.... that was the topic I thought I was on!

Yes but it is that snobbery that will lead to the terminal decline of this "decent scene" in the next few years.... just look at the average age of those who attend now and the relative lack of young enthusiasts. How do you know newcomers would not hang around? Don't quite see the point in your last phrase. Didnt PP add diversity then? And I think you do know what I mean!- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
If that were the case, I would put up with, applaud even, the playing of it- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Just about managing to, thank you Yes... A Few Feet From The Gutter by The Ascots.... the record mentioned on p.1- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
How so? You could make that argument for any record that has ever been played on the scene, then. And don't get me started about the snobbery alienating people... especially newcomers!- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Decent enough record but I thought it was A Few Feet From The Gutter we were talking about earlier? And that's elevator music!- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Hi Shane Its called politeness I think Mello Souls is a great record btw- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
You could be an inverted soul snob?- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like

Just to keep on topic, I don't understand the fuss over that Two + Two record. Grim, IMHO- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
hmmm....how strange!- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Fine thanks Mark Thats not so much a shite record.... more done to death!!- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Perhaps you can remember better than me, but I would have associated PP more with Cleggy than Wigan Yes its commercial, but it was popular to dance to. Thats what used to happen at NS events before the right wingers decided it was better to stand around nodding politely to "smooth" mid-tempo records Bloody good thread....where's Col?- Absoloutely Useless Records Which Soul Snobs Like
Looks like you've answered Richards other question as well (This is the best thread for ages, btw )- Greatest Northern Soul Record (fast)
Ree Flores... brilliant track!! And it took some keeping up with before it was played at Stafford!- Best Dancers
