Anglo American Auction 19/10/23
I agree with all of your comments. I am 65 and have been collecting soul record since I was 11 years old, got into what came e to be know as Northern Soul when I was barely 13 years old, went to Wigan when I was 15 and still at school, not bad for a lad who lived in Dorset. It just proves that underground soul music wasn't only being played up norf, we had a thriving scene down here.

I am aware of that, all dealers do it because that is how they make their money. If they just sold off their own collections they would eventually run out of income.

I can vouch for the fact that not all of these are Tims own reords because I have sent quite a few to him to place in the auction, three of last weeks were mine. I don't think that Tim has any intention of selling his own collection and if he did he would tell everyone. Lets face it noe of us are getting any younger and what will happen to our collections when we are ashes or compost?

Why have you marked the last 2 entries?

Ray Pollard
Tim Brown has a UK issue in his auction this week and as everyone knows Tim is very conservative with his gradings, unlike one or tow other big name dealers who run auctions.
-
Ray Pollard The Drifter
If you didn't manage to bag that one, I have just sent TIm a UK Issue for auction that will appear in the next week or so.

That's a bit defeatest and negative. There are two things in my life that I have a passion for collecting, records and cars. I have a decent collection of records that I am quiet happy with, but I will always aspire to own some that I probably never will. I would also love to own a whole load of classic Ferraris and Porsches that I know I could never aford but that doesn't make me hate the people who do own them or stop aspiring to own them. The trick is to buy what is out of fashion. I have been collecting records for more than 50 years so quite a lot of my best British Demos were junk shop finds when I was a kid, but I have also bought some big ticket records for peanuts because they were not "fashionable" at the time, one I recall was Milton Wright I Belong to You, which is in my mind a bloody awful piece of drivel for which I paid £40 and then sold it 5 years later for just uner £1000. I Then used that profit to buy some of the records that had previously been out of my price bracket. Next to go are a UK issue of Ray Polard The Drifter and a UK Demo of Frankie & Johnny, both of which cost me about 10p each. So in your mind I may be a rick old bloke BUT I nobody ever gave me anything, I earnd every penny and paid the tax on the bloody lot!

I have to say that I am sometimes confused by some of Darren's prices. Quite often you see monster records at what most would consider to be lower than market values, I suppose that it is no wonder that they have always been snapped up 10 seconds after the email hits my inbox. If it were me I would price them a bit higher or even auction the big ones, afterall he is selling on behalf of the owners and should be looking to get the highest price.

Just when I thought that the looneytoon prices of the past 3 years had come to an end and the market for good quality records had gone back to 2019 prices we see this madness!

Record cleaning machines🥺
This type of machine is certainly better than a lot of the crazy options that people have dreamt up, just remember to use distilled water, change the solution regularly and keep the brushes clean and this will do a reasonable job, and it's cheap!

Record cleaning machines🥺
That thing would not be let anywhere near any of my records. It looks like one of the things from the 1970's for removing fluff from suit jackets!

Before you accuse me of lying please would you read the other comments on this and then you might realise the importance of setting up a turntable properly. There are a lot of people who support my comments which proves that there is truth in what I am saying. By all mean continue playing your record on crap equipement that it not set up properly, it may not ruin them in one play but they will quickly deteriorate.

Record cleaning machines🥺
Moving on with this topic, I just saw this on ebay. Just read the coments by the twat who is selling these records!!!!!!. Suffice to say that I will NOT be bidding. https://www.ebay.com/itm/374892067155?hash=item57494ef953%3Ag%3AZ6IAAOSwUHNk4kRb&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&campid=5336393618&customid=&toolid=10049

Record cleaning machines🥺
I agree, there are lots of very unscrupulous sellers out there peddling crap for big money and are very reluctant to refund buyers because the records look almost mint. I argued for weeks with one a could of year ago and he only refunded me when I got a mate to buy another record from him and found it to be the same. So I threatened to out him on here and posted a note about buying record that look great but play crap.

Record cleaning machines🥺
I don't go to many soul nights at all but am still a pretty avid collectors and have been for more that 50 years. I have been asked if I could bring along some records and do a spot at some local nights but have a mate who did it and came home with 60 grands worth of knackered records because the turntables were so bad and now won't play on his decent turntable. I have no idea why people with collections worth hundreds of thousands can't bring themsleves to buy a decent hifi and learn how to set it up properly. Since I bought my cleaning machine I hear things on records that I have never heard before.

Record cleaning machines🥺
I am a big advocate of a good quality record cleaning machine, because a good one used properly really does work. There are loads available at a huge range of prices, as usual the cheaper ones don't do such a good job, the best are the twin head was vaccum types of the really expesvie ultr sonic machines. I really annoys me that there are so many people out there with huge and extremely valuable records collections who never clean their reocrds and play them on crap turntables that are destroying their records. I have visited a few of the top dealers and have stood and watched them play and record records worth thousands on shitty turntable that cost less than £150 with a 10 year old stylus! and this is mirrored all over the country by people who do not see the worth in investing in a decent turntable, a cartridge and cleaning machine.
