  1. Got to be DARRELL BANKS for male artist Lorraine Ellison female
  2. Live and learn, never new that. By the time Jayboy issued it , it was ignored as just another re issue of an oldie, don't think many realised the Jackie Lee version then. Imagine it's 4 in the morning, you've had 10 dex and this comes on......................enough said!
  3. Jackie Lee's version on the album The Duck is far faster than the original Bob&Earl recording, amazing that this version never got played as it's f**king awesome! Shelly
  4. I authorised my quotes, though after half a dozen pints in back room of Queens Head !!!!! Shelly

My comment was pop crap- re records played, not that Wigan was crap, slight difference and involved music policy not social policy

One , given some of the pop crap that started to get played from mid 1974 onwards it was an escape Two, the corridor was full of the guys who were lets say "dodgy" but for us, a great source of where to get next weeks gear. Three, if you weren't sufficiently out of it, you wouldn't notice , so why winge. Shelly
  8. Got a copy of The Entertainer by The News somewhere ,cover of Tony Clarke's version
  9. This is what Sidney Barnes told me last year when I asked him a similar question "Darrell Banks was a pretty nice guy to work with and hang out with, he was one bad dude in the streets, that's why he got killed he wouldn't take any shit off any body. And some times you have to back off and not push it. I was lucky to get a song on the B side of Open The Door which sold nearly a million copies. I never got paid for it and still trying to collect from it. " Sounds pretty cool to me Shelly
  10. Top man, great fun to be with Dave Sheldon Derby
  11. shelly commented on Godzilla's comment in News Archives
Used to have the BlacByrd album, well ahead of it's time, great musician
  12. Olde English in fact was a normal disco, Nicky used to do an hour an half northern on Friday & Sats, Tuesday was more northern, less locals in. Nobody else DJ'd there( though Den Mac used to go along with the Gillanders brothers from Derby) except in the late 60's when it was Nick and Dallas, think they wanted to be Radio 1 DJ's! Re the concretet dance floor, you didn't go there to dance............................... Bridget got married and moved to Turkey, however, heard that a long time ago and so has probably returned; Thommo (my spelling and always knew him that way)can't be found, have tried all his ex wifes family and get blanked, Nobby from down this way doesn't know either, shame cause a great bloke. Remember all coming back from a Central allnighter back to Matlock and ended up chasing sheep in Chatswoth park at 8am, Thommo and a few others from Leed where there as there was a stash in the vacinity. Talking of that time, Thursday night at Nether Edge Sheffield, used to go up with Nicky, all the guys from Sheff and Rotherham -Mopsy, Steve Goodison, Bob Parker etc used to go and loads of fit birds, halcyon days the summer of 73. Anyone know what happened to Karen Evans? Shelly
  13. Hi Pete The flier is from La Metro Cromford market place, to the left of the Greyhound pub/hotel as you face it. It's a red brick barn and the club was at the top of the steps in front, still in existence, but as a shop selling wicker baskets etc. Originally was a club(dead small in the late 60's, remember the name from older guys. The flier you have is from mid 73 after the Torch shut, Nicky who'd been DJ'ing at the Olde English in Matlock for years, fell out with the owner and opened up Le metro, lasted 2/3 weeksd before they kissed and made up and then moved back to the Old E. Suprised about your trip to Notts, as during '72/'73 every Friday, Thomo , Alan Stephenson , Mary Robertshaw(she was gorgeous) and another bird from Leeds came each Friday, purely for medicinal purposes. Shelly

Sorry, maybe a bit confused, but I thought Clarkie came from Leeds. or where there two? Given we moved in similar circles Steve, perhaps you could clarify Shelly
  15. A story I heard yestrday afternoon at Anita Varneys 60th, back in the days, Richards, Jones and Watts went to the Wheel after the release of their first LP, all cover versions, Roger Eagle then proceeded to play the original verson of every track on side one, one after the other to piss them off. Fucking star!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shelly
  16. Hi Manus, Yes it was Chris, shocked to hear that he's passed away, when was that? Met him when we both lived in Jersey, now that's a story!and then later when I moved up to Newcastle, but lost touch after he moonlighted to Florida after Fatso's went tits up. Also knew his little brother well, but he came later mid 80's In respect to Frank, I think it was McCue, used to knock around with Chris , Billy Swift, Davey etc. but never knew his surname, used to see him in Walkers late 80's if that narrows it down any. Good lads all. Shelly
  17. Not a niter, but the best soul club ever in Newcastle, the A Go -Go,when I lived up there late seventies at college bought a pile of Jimmy James and Geno singles all on Pye and Piccadily stamped with A Go-Go, mates at the time from there Quinny, Frank, Alex etc said it was awesome, Handyside Arcade c64-68 Shelly

Don't really understand what you're trying to say, by the punk era 76/77 then every man and his dog was at Wigan , initially we were talking about the villainy in the scene before all the toy towners came in, i.e. when it was real.
  19. Frantic Escape-Innocent Bystanders, no delay befor it kicks in and makes a statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Business phone Help me - Spellbinders - Personal phone
  20. shelly posted a post in a topic in All About the SOUL
No disrespect, but that would be 76/77,the real every Sat night villainy had passed on to an extent, as every man and his do had jumped on the bandwagon, look at some of the earlier posts and you'll understand how dodgy it was, brawls with outsiders where an appetiser then! Shelly

The box was Blue, half way between an Everton shirt and Man City in colour, the rest is correct, what was in it I don't know, but guess some other classic stuff apart from what you mention, as remember Pep had records that weren't big until later, example, Skiing in the Snow at the end of '72. The box was burnt on November 5th 1975 on a council community bonfire when I saw it and recognised it Shelly

Send me a pm and then can have a sensible discussion, as for the quiz, the quiz master has the answers, does anyone else(perpetrators excluded) have the answer? Coddy was a thug, the others where great guys. Shelly

Hi Andrew, Good to see that his thread has legs again! However, a point to make, have your book and read a few times, but an issue to discuss probably by pm's, is the use of Barbs. Originally you took Mandy's(Mandrax) to help the come down, the increase in Barb use in late 74 onwards was different,am sure we all had experiences on barbs, but why? Going to a niter barbed up for what? Totally the opposite of the initial reason for going,(excitement), however putting Amphet in the DDA cabinet is the reason for the increase in the use in opiates in the northern scene, but it is little to do with Barb/Opiate use in the UK at that time. Looking back, and not my own opinion from those that were there, it was used by people who didn't have the bollocks to crank diamorph.(Am sure that you'll want to discuss this, so pm me). By the way, a lot of the people who didn't make it in your book, didn't die from gear, Steve,Bootlace,Coddy, Russ, two of whom where good mates. Anyway, to more important issues, as Pete said, Dave Thomo is hard to find, but I have an angle and hopefully will get hold of him, mates for loads of years , met him and Alan Stevenson first at the Wheel and have a long history. Lastly, a little quiz as this is about villains.......... Whose records where knicked in a blue box? what was in it? and where is the box now? Clue, it included a Dynavoice demo of Skiing in the Snow, which at the time hadn't been pressed and the club was the Cats, answers please on an original script for Green & Clears! That should sort out who was there and who thinks they where! Shelly
