  9. First played on the scene around 1979 covered up as the Superlatives. Sam, Raistrick, Wherry, Searling and one or two others playing it. Think they came from John Andreson, who a year or so later found the stock load. Was then on his list for £2.50. Never was a £400 record, even when first played, one of the "at the time covered-up" copies sold for £50. Maybe if you ring John, he'll shed some light on it for you. Never heard of it being a 'pressed-up' for scene job". That said the publishing company was Roll'em Smok'em Music.

I've never been into scooters, but that is Amazing!!! The owner must be really proud of it!
  11. Wind the intimidation in Dave, its dull, boring and doesn't work, particularly with me. I'll PM you offline about that. Understand from your story why you have stuck with collecting British, I think this passion and early connection with the music, when most things available were on British format is what has cemented the 'bond' to the British releases for UK collectors. I do think the UK collectors are 'hard core' and this reflects the price holds. My point is that they are mainly re-issues, and so not the 'real thing' in my opinion. I know someone who collects boots and reissues, he says that the pressings (boot) mentality over the years became the backbone on which the scene developed, and if it wasn't for the availability in the late 70s of boots and pressings their would be no scene today. He's very proud of his collection and sites some very very rare pieces (albeit they are boots). I think, people collect what they want because it means something to them, whether its British, Pressings, US Originals or Pokemon cards, each to their own, its what make life interesting. KTF
  12. Pogo Paul, Go back to the original opening post of this thread, and read it. I have expressed a view. Just because British collectors don't agree, why get personal. My sarcastic remarks have been a response to personal digs and insults. I would say my posts have been kind, humored and restrained. Now to your points; I agree with you the rare soul scene is a British Phenomenon. The early scene did rely to a large part on British re-issues of American releases, but the enduring health and progress of the scene has rested on American only releases, the vast majority on minor labels. Hence British releases are NOT the roots of the scene, they are the roots to what would have been a FAD, if not for the early dealers and DJs going to America and unearthing these obscure American releases, then the scene would have died out in the early 70's. So Pogo Paul, you are Wrong, in my opinion. I collect a little, so have a valid opinion to contribute to the thread, my view in response to the original opening post of the thread is clear. Just because some collectors have focused their collecting endeavors on British releases then that is their call. If they find my view irritating, then I am not responsible for that, they will have to look within themselves for the source of that emotion. Could it be regret, realisation or even boredom perhaps? I don't know, but each to their own. I'll stick to original US 45's, with all its colour, risk and the chance that I might, just might, find something on an obscure ohio label, just outside of Toledo, that had 3 releases, which turns out to be a cracking new Northern Soul discovery of the highest musical quality. Now isn't that something that makes the pursuit of collecting really worthwhile? Call me a purist, call me a snob; value of British Releases?, enjoy!.... so think about it..... is it really me that carries that baggage? Kind regards, Andy
  13. Okay its not a small collecting scene then, if that makes you happy, I understand how relatively small numbers can overwhelm and bewilder amaoebas. However, I've never referred to you or anyone as a pauper, what I did refer to you as was a single soululler organism. Your confirmation that you also collect USA 45s, doesn't prove that you are any further up the evolutionary scale, on the contrary, you are most likely to be a very confused single soululler organism, a little sad, but never mind at least you're happy. So apart from me being a shallow opinionated small minded tosser, do actually have anything at all of value to add to the thread? Naturally, being Soul Royalty I would invite you to deliver a response with respect and due accord.
  14. One of your new weekly discoveries Pete! Remember? sleeves are just as important as the vinyl that lies within.
  15. And your value added contribution to the thread is??? By the way, is a nob another name for one of your fellow amoeba species, just not sure if you meant it as a compliment or not? I've just saw another Shane Martin demo in a Camden junk shop, best go before I lose it, mint condition in original CBS advance sleeve too, WOW!!!
  16. You see the problem with you single soululler organisms (amaoebas) is that you seem unable to see the error of your rather poor, sad little ways. It would warrant re-examination from us higher ordered and sophisticated soul folk IF you could actually debate and constructively articulate a defense of your absurd british collecting behaviour and habitual fascination with Red and Green A'd reissues? Tongue in cheek .... hmm?
  17. Contributing to the thread with my opinion on the strange habit of collecting boring unexciting and limited British Soul Releases. Dave, what's your opinion, and how can you defend a soul record collecting scene based on re-issues and limited richness of quality and scope?
  18. It wasn't a thread or conversation about number of releases per head count., but one of significance in in soul collecting terms. I agree that there is a small collecting scene for rare British soul releases. My opinion is that its all a bit silly and pointless really, as the originals of most British releases ARE by and large american. I mean, its not likely that you can discover great new unknown releases now is it? Get my point?
  19. Vontastics, Dean parrish, Fascinations, Invitations, Jay W King, Rufus Lumey ....... Visionaries at Stateside ????? Pete, you may love those little red and green A's but give us a break. The overall quality of British released 60's soul is limited and poor by the benchmark of US original releases in general. I understand that British releases with those small holes holds a nostalgic "british industry" fascination for some people. But but its certainly not on the fertile ground of proper and serious rare soul record collecting, more of a "toy hobby kind of thing".
  20. I've never really understood the whole british release thing to be honest. Legal re-issues for the most part, and the choice/quality of releases reflects the lack of understanding of soul. later day releases of unissued material is slightly different, could be argued and fair enough. Its all too nostalgic. Why collect british, when the original US labels were first. Its all seems very odd and make believe. and yes I know about the mod/early clubs argument etc etc.
  21. Hi Paul, hope you're well. I was at Wigan a lot, I travelled on coaches, on the train, with friends and on my own. So know a little about back then, soul music and the scene in general. I don't know about the embryonic life of this film or how Wigan became the canvas on which the film was painted. For me the trailer looks at least interesting and does carry that nice 'British Made' feel to it. Sure, the accuracy will not be precise, and the details will be embellished, but it might just turn out to be a decent British film and a good watch. No harm in that whatsoever. Whether the final full length edited film will be good or not will only be known after it has been released. I think overall, it is nice that its been done, whatever the outcome. As to the makers of the film and their background and motives, who cares! This release, may not revitalise the scene for another fresh generation, but its hardly going to damage it now is it. Take care Andy
  22. Well said Rodger!
  23. Thats because its another "first played at Burnley" record you domut. LOL A weak mid-tempo effort on Okeh, hardly the same record as the Mellow Town 45.
  24. Tim Ashibendie once said, "collecting rare soul is problematic". How right is was, well collecting (and selling) unknown/undocumented 45's is even more so. I spend most of my time searching and buying in the unknown end of things. A simple framework i use is this. No 1- Exhaust, the usual references, RnB 45's, Soul Harmony Singles, the UK guides, the Japaneese funk guides, popsike, the various US group guides and of course... google. Then ask (discreetly) some of the main collectors. from this you should be able o establish some benchmark on scarcity. No 2 - Is simple... musical merit. Does the record have what it takes, given its particular genre/type. (unfortunately, this comes down to having an "ear for the music" and sense of future taste trend) No 3 - Is the demand for that genre/type (ie - 60s uptempo, crossover, funky northern etc) bullish or bearish. No. 4 - There has to be some future value left in the sell or buy price for the investor. The future value has still yet to be created! It may work out, it may not. As everyone knows and its been said above, DJs tend to be a big creator of future value of a record. If it gets played and catches on, the value will be realised, if it doesn't get played, then it probably won't. This is the risk that the buyer takes and has to be reflected in the valuation and sell price of unknown/undocumented soul 45s. Not perfect, but hope this helps you! Andy
  25. Alan, This is a wonderful Trust. You have my sponsership for £100. Good luck, Andy Killcik
