Is Covering Up A Soul Dj Kind Of Thing?
not sure I agree with how readily availble most of the top house sounds from the early days were. I'm still searching for some now! There loads of guys still going through parksy's and Sasha's tracklistings from old tapes, site devoted to it and real fanatics out there. From my recollection getting the best sounds on the early house/ underground rave scene was harder than northern, nobody announced the names of the records for a start! Standing for hours on end on saturday in Eastern block to hear what was played on the big system in the was one way, word of mouth another. Lots of imports were about for a week or two from the distributors to disappear if you missed them and hadnt the cash that week, otherwise you'd have to wait 20 years for discogs to be invented to get another chance.

Rip Frankie Knuckles
No Dj has contributed as much as Frankie, aside Larry, and the pair were inseprable anyway. Much missed, a sad day for music indeed.

Record Cleaner
i'm wondering if masking fluid ( smells just like the marvyn glue we used at school) would be better, it seems different to pva, far more elasticity, but think its water based, anyone tried it?

Wigan 78 - It Was As Bad As This?
probably more likely that they sort out those 'weirdo music fans, who want to dance in that old fashioned way'.

All Of Motown Versus All Of The Rest
the rest of detriot vs motown maybe a fairer battle.

1980's Northern Low Point
mind you always wished I'd gone to bretby ( was that 9ts or the other side of the millenium?). and the 9ts must have been a bumper time for buying tunes.

1980's Northern Low Point
I said the low point was the mid 9ts.

Mr. Mark Dobson Aka Butch
its perhaps a good opportunity to re- tell a tale I've heard told on the scene a couple of times; and ask if there's any truth in it? apologies in advance if its entirely fictional. 'local resident was playing a set at winsford nighter in the dark days of the mid 9ts. He played an acetate of one of Butch's exclusives, dubbed from a tape from one of his dj sets. Butch strolls over to the decks and as the tune is still playing takes the needle off the deck and walks back over to his sales box without saying a word.' if it is true, conna fault yer youth. was anyone there? can you confirm it? what was the tune?

B.b. King - Any Northern Plays?
He did a cover of 'I cant please you' its on the mfp lp, not exactly northern but worthy of a listen. Excellent doc too, BB seems to be one of the few musicians that seem able to transend non secular and spiritiual music.

The Best Unreleased Soul?
cant believe nobody has an opinion on this, are we too busy being dillusional about the brits?
-
The Brits
personally I cant see how anyone involved in an underground scene can think that the blatant commercial exploitation of a subculture that's taken generations to evolve, or dissolve for that matter, can be a positive thing. 'happy' says nothing to me about the qualities of northern soul i appreciate. 'happy' is highly commercial pop written with children in mind, am I missing a connection here to the bittersweet refrains of the salvadors or lou pride?

The Best Unreleased Soul?
got to raise this here, many of these by the very nature, are exclusively owned, in the original format, by one or two collectors, not all of whom play records out on a regular basis. deep breath here, but is it good for the scene that many of these tunes remain unheard by the mainstream northern crowd? not even sure of my own thoughts on this one a very thorny issue indeed! what about tape only finds? any of the top jocks own a reel to reel? sounds ludicrous but greg wilson takes one to all his sets to play his edits. it seems odd and equally ludicrous that some quirk of fate decides because there's no acetate of a particular recording we can play a recent issue of a track, but not if some had the foresight to cut an acetate (or two) at the time. As I said, not sure how i really feel about it myself, and certainly not trying to be provocative but would be interested on members thoughts.

The Best Unreleased Soul?
has mr dobson got the only acetate of this then chalky? sad if its the case it deserves massive exposure.

The Best Unreleased Soul?
derek martin- flashback, as good as eddie parker, imho, mastering is weak I know, but an awesome track. cant believe nobody's mentioned, charlie rich- dont tear me down either.
-
The Best Unreleased Soul?
cant see itm but cant believe we've missed, Otis- loving by the pound. Jimmy ruffin- he who picks his nose, was massive, got hammered and pissed everyone off but is still brilliant in my book.

The Best Unreleased Soul?

Wrong side of Town
just trying to make a point about how commercial sounding many of the songs from that era were, Betty Swan should of been a hit when it was released.
-
Wrong side of Town
tis all to easy to forget the context, Four v's was played alongside this, Linda Lloyd, betty swan, Spinners- 'dont want to fall...' even Nolan Porter, lots of commercial sounding tunes around at the time as the scene became, ahem reinvigorated. Most I loved at the time, some sound shite now, but at least there were fresh plays in the main room.

Never Seen This
the mentality of hip hop diggers is so different, for them its all about the groove, collectability often doesn't figure.
