How Many "scene's" Are Cover By The "northern Soul" Tag ?
Pete What I mean is that there are sixties & seventies records that could follow each other quite nicely with out too much disruption to the floor, if done with a modicom of common sense you could then gradually over a couple or discs move to the kinda seventies or what ever you wanna play, its common sense really.....................not just choosing 20 records & playing them no matter what...............please do not think I am telling any one what they should enjoy with regards to soul music, If you totally dislike a genre, then you are not going to persuade some one to dance or even attend places that play things that they dont enjoy, but a lot of people will enjoy most danceable soul if it is presented in a manner that makes it enjoyable by promoters & DJ'S................for example you are not going to follow the Mellow Souls with Masters at Work, but a sensible DJ could get there over the period of several records that fit together in a set. I do tend to agree with you aswell Andy, I'm not saying that all Allnighters should have just one room, only that it has been done & can be done with a little thought, after all what is Northern Soul, ok classic Northern has been pidgeon holed as four to the floor mock motown, but all Northern Soul really is, is a Soul record (?) made popular at a Northern Soul Allnighter/Soul Night. I think that that is down to the DJ who followed, not the music played...its about mixing it together properly, not necessarily the genres played. Also the promoter needs to take some responsibility as they plan the DJ rosta ie who follows who. Russ

The whole lot should be played in one room & mixed up by the DJ's, the only criteria being that whats played is quality soul music & it gets the dance floor. Difficult to mix different genres & recording techniques together I know, but it can be done.....................who gives a flying f*ck, if it feels good do it, all the best Northern venues of the past played everything under one roof, the only exception being possibly the 100 club (my favourite Nighter ironically) but evan the 100 Club mixes in Modern & Crossover cuts if theyre right for the night & the floor is up for it. I appreciate that with the passage of time the amount of Modern Soul available to play becomes greater & the recording techniques harder to mix in with traditional styles, but DJ's can & do do it quite successfully, its about choosing quality danceable soul music. Now that the cat has been well & truly put amongst the pidgeons, I'll now sit back & see what happens . Russ

Cover Ups - Do They Still Exist?
Really do not see this as a vald argument against cover ups, as most (not all) of the artists concerned would never have received any recognition for the recording anyway & there certainly wouldnt be the interest in the disc if it hadnt been covered up on the NS scene. Why dont you ask Little Major Williams how he feels about his disc being played under cover, shouldnt imagine that he gives a poopa scoopa, but he might thank you if there are ever legal reissues that he benifits from or we find another couple of playable titiles by him & if he's still alive & kicking might come over to cleggy etc & give a live performance & receive some over due respect etc from the UK. Cover ups get a big thumbs up from me. Russ

Nice trolley's mate. I won the dance comp at one of the Yate revivals back in the late 8ts & still proudly display my trophy, much to the amusement of my young son.....................happy days . Russ- Modern Dancer/stepper
Sorry Gav, just wanted to share, did it get a vinyl release ???. To be honest Gav trying to hear soul music of any genre or decade is almost a pointless excercise in Virginia mate, but for some reason its even harder to find crossover & Modern ???, its easier to get on to Crazy Beat & get em to send it back over.........................any one got any tips on hearing half decent Modern tunes in the US, internet radio obviously broadcast from Europe, but I want to hear US radio stations that play this kinda thing, but theyre all 'smooth RnB from yesterday & today' yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn any tips. Russ Gavin hope your well Buddy,- Deadbeats

John Legends CD 'Get Lifted' was released in early 2005, so hardly on the ball here am I, but was listening to 'Live It Up' yesterday & wow what a choon, did a search on the site & it was reviewed in 2004 as DMSC Modern play & this was the review: " John Legend - Live It Up - Unreleased. Superb mid tempo soul off the Kanye West Akedemics unreleased album.Soulful vocals with a haunting melody. This will be in my top 5 at the end of the year". Well just thought people should know that its available & have a gentlte reminder of just how good this is. Still a credible Modern Room play IMO. Russ- Papa Bear & The Cubs
Could some one post up or email me a half decent quality scan of PBATC pse. The scan on JM's site BTW is pantaloons. Just for my records of course . Russ- Value Please?
I think that its about £250 - £300, bought mine years ago for £100 & certainly seen it reviewed since with a higher tag..................dont think that this is an easy disc to find, could be wrong of course. Russ- Deadbeats
