Think he means Brighton set as in scooters mods etc......so the 100 Club is going to turn into another London Mod Club then?. I was at x fire.Didn't see many mods in the main room.A lot of mods in the other rooms though dancing to freakbeat/psych.The younger kids seem to find that a more exciting, cool, younger and friendly scene.I don't know if the days of the tailor made mod will return en masse like the eighties as the mod scene seems to be split. The Freakbeat majority)groovies/the middle aged plastics who ride vespas with union jacks mirrors and lights/jam shoes (local doos and Iow) and the r&b soul into 64/65 styles (in the minority). A lot of the 80's mods are around 38-45 and are the basis of the London rare soul scene(no seventies!!).I think there is a younger untapped audience out there....I thought Amy Wineblouse would have been down there by now (come on Amy youve had enough)....hic hic my Blakey.....Maybe getting one of the Deep Funk deejays on or Gaz Mayall.What is this XRay Soul Club about.It seems a young thing. Might be at Bethnal Green working mens Club.Maybe some interest there.

I said Mod r&b deejays who deejay on the mod scene that could bring people from the mod scene in numbers with them to the 100 Club. Im not talking about r&b deejays from the rare soul scene.................jesus (I don't know nothing about r&b by the way lol ) Thanks for that youve just reminded me of another London club...Gaz Rockin Blues....think that has been open since 1980.I wonder how he has kept it going so long.Another one for the London Club list. Think Gaz dad had a famous club near Ealing Railway Station.Had some dodgy band play there once...can't remember their name..Strolling something.

Maybe I should rephrase it....mod deejays that play soul and r&b that have a following that would bring 100 people to the 100 Club.The mod scene for want of a better word does not provide the customers to the rare soul scene or northern soul scene like it used to.They would rather listen to Ruperts People or The Attack or even Tinkerbells Fairydust. A lot are from the rock side and don't even like black music.If they did they would have swarmed the 100 Club after hearing the music at xfire.Thats just the way it is. Forget r&b, popcorn, latin,jazz funk.....reggae is the new northern soul and you had better like it at the venues or Matthew Hopkins will be paying a visit...

Maybe we will all disappear like the Teds did in 77.As a kid I even remember Teddy Boy families!!!!. Where are the teds now???

There are no good mod r &b soul deejays,that died out with Paul Hallam, Dom Bassett,Ian Jackson (now there's a thought been around for years and great taste in music) etc. Theres the Hideaway crew if you want r&b... or psych deejays from Spain or Italy.

Bloody hell Pete....this is great.This is the sort of stuff record collector should be printing instead of dumbing down.I could add to this on glancing.I was a regular buyer of your mag Pete....pre internet I think.Still got them all as well.You should really think about contacting Record Collector or some northern mags and getting this out.

Theres been a few warmups in the 100 Clubs past....Trickster did one down Holloway Road I think.Miles away from the venue though.There was Johnnys Valtone nights in Eustonand now there's a warm up in Farringdon.It's 3 hours to kill for the transport to kick in on a sunday.I't wasn't bad when it was an 8 finish..a bit of breakfast and the transport was on.I think there's too many soul nights in London playing in the same style and not enough customers....and that's the bottom line.It's a night out, a few beers,hear some tunes, back home for horlicks and slippers.The mods that came through from the pre untouchables days were into soul and r&b and walked straight from Shmon by Mr Dynamite into Melba Moore Magic Touch seamlessly.There was that surge.The X fire New Untouchables customers aren't really interested.Most are young and are into psych and garage.....a lot of them don't even like soul.Northerners won't travel down as they now have a load of soul nights/niters on their doorstep. They have no need to travel.They used to have to travel to hear sounds.Maybe some fresh up and coming deejays playing new sounds along with some more established names.Let's look at the past.I moved down to London in 86 and started going then.I can't think of any other soul night/niters on then in London.I used to go the Wag on Monday nights (but that wasn't soul) and I remember going to a few events in Euston at some pub but that was about it...oh and a few trips to the Norfolk village in Shoreditch for modern soul.Then it was travelling up north to the Ritz and the Cleethorpes weekenders or Southport. Look at my previous list of nights in London.The 100 Club had a captive audience of mods (who liked soul and r&b) who were disillusioned with where the mod scene was heading plus there was an influx of European mods and Japanese along with the rest.There came a time when the sons of the 100 Club then went and opened up their own nights...Scenesville, Dome,These Old Shoes,Valtone and it has gone on from there.It's a rock and a hard place.Do you abandon membership and cover your costs with passing trade and hope some of them get into it or do you make it members only and hope the members turn up.?? Just thought of another 2 London gigs XRAY SOUL and The Top 500. at the Buffalo Bar..............!!

Do you mean there's a JA thread or up on refosoul....apologies it should have went n the JA thread.Not that technically minded although I've a lead that goes into the laptop from the deck but it takes an age to get one tune on to the lap top.I'm using Eze vinyl converterfrom something called a mix meister??.Takes an age for one tune though.

Takes 5 seconds on the phone camera and then a lead straight into the laptop.I've an A3 scanner but it's defunct now.Would take hours on the scanner.

Just for D the Drug whose Reggae bits were crossing into the soul thread...seriously though some of these labels are a work of art..Some customers at the bottom as well.....Dad I think I dun it rong again...

Well thats the word from a man who has the demo and issue........whats the going rate then??? Does this happen a lot to other buyers.I've bought a lot of records from the US and never happened before.

Bought a Charades Key to my Happiness demo in vg plus for £155 but the post office have told me that I owe £33.00 for duty. This is the first time this has happened as most people declare the customs lower.Should I bite the bullet and pay?? or get it sent back and will I get a refund off paypal??

It would be cheaper to get a flight to the US and find one I think. I did get told what place it was from.Come on you lot. Which deejays have copies because you have 2 people here willing to travel to hear it. and who has got Judy Hughes down south this week/today....

Check popsike or the current rate (so I'm told) is £2k for a minter.Great record.Does it get played at va va voom?.If it does I will go to hear it out.I would also travel to hear Judy Hughes-Fine Fine Fine but in London I think Greg had a copy...Tony Smith then had it. Greg never had it at x fire.It's a bit like catch the pidgeon.....It's probably under someones bed.

You would have to keep the 100 Club open Saturday and Sunday nights.There's a common thread here "I havent been for" and I'm as guilty as everyone else.I go to Boogaloo, Solid Hit Soul,Va Va Voom and Capones although I do a few scooter rallies on the Lambrettas . I don't go there for the music though....not really into Paul Wellersjamsunderpants play the Small Faces or northern on CD.Some of it is a cheesefest.I mostly go to Soul nights though.Probably because the people I'm with just don't do nighters (Mrs/kids/work etc).Butch deejays other places so the exclusivity of his sounds are no more.Everyone wants to deejay and the records can be bought with the click of a mouse if you have the money.No rummaging through boxes at allnighters and waiting for lists through the letterbox and ringing Pat Brady or Soulbowl to be told ....its gone.Everyone who doesn't get the opportunity to deejay then opens up their own night more often enough based on the 100 Club template.There used to be a lot of mods come through from the mod scene (pre Untouchables) but that has died out. Most now seem to prefer psych/rock music. I spoke to an Italian girl at xfire who was dancing in the soul room.She was into the psych. I said what's the attraction to the psych. She said the music is exciting and the people are younger.This music is for old people but it's quaint....jesus where has the edge gone!!!The pre mod revival northern scooter scene ran along with northern soul in the seventies.Whatever happened to that.The answer I think is special guests who can pull a crowd. Searling, Clarkey, Colin Curtis what about Terry Jones or Chris Hill(might upset some punters) the night would be different and maybe make some converts........Simon Soussan (only joking).There's a lot of deejays I have never seen dance as well and who only go to places where they are deejaying. What's that all about??

Va Va Voom Boogaloo Solid Hit Soul Capones (Benfleet) Essex I know Towerful Of Soul The new Volcano Allnighter RSG Hemel Mind Yuh Business Crystal Palace Mousetrap 100 Club warm up gig. Hard As Nails Filthy Soul Crossfire Allnighter Madam Jojos Bisley (surrey) Ben Summers doo on Sundays Smersh nights... X Ray soul Top 500 (Buffallo Bar) Islington Theres a club in Hackney as well...name will come to me New entry-Brighton Beach Allnighter Hove Chelmsford Allnighter Gaz Rockin Blues This is all the old 100 Club's potential audience (apart from Bisley or Jojos).If these werent happening 100 Club would be full.How many of these have consistently packed nights apart from Solid Hit and Va Va Voom.All the customers are spread and the anticipation of the next gig is gone.The 100 Club was unique but it has been copied in soul night form.Everyone wants a piece of the pie but there's not enough pie to go round so people cook their own and it aint Mr Kipling. I havent even touched the surface of London and the surrounding areas plus there's weekenders/Mod doos/scooter doos/Foreign Soul weekenders/UK soul weekenders...the bubble has got to burst as the recession kicks in and maybe it will go back to a few allnighters in the UK again. Thats just off the top of my head.There was a time when the 100 Club was the only place you could go and hear such a broad mix of music in the south, never mind the UK .It seems the wheel has gone full circle and I'm finding it hard to find a solid uptempo niter with new similar sounds!!. This was a time before everyone wanted to be a promoter and deejay (and that includes me!!) and a time before the proliferation of soul nights.The customers are spread very thin and at a lot of the above venues the template is based on the 100 Club.There wasn't the proliferation of soul nights and a lot of people take the easy option....let's check this club out ,never been before,we can have a few drinks and be off by two.What about the 100 Club?.No it will always be there.If these clubs were not there and the 100 Club was the only place to hear the music then the 100 Club would be packed, but that's democracy.People get older/more commitments/kids and lazier.The ambience of the place is unique, even with the bumpy dancefloor.The 6am finish doesn't help.It was bad enough at 8 getting transport home on a Sunday.Just my thoughts. Theres always been tourists at the 100 Club but most of them were into soul music and were on holiday/visiting.Used to be loads of German/Italian/Japanese as well.Even the ones that werent into the music were respectful.People will turn out for special events/ anniversaries/Cross fire (although a lot of people who would have been to x fire went to Stafford) but regular niter goers are getting thin on the ground because of soul nights.Never went to the original venue before the 100 Club...was it West Hampstead and always wondered what it was like.I've even been passing through a few times and thought about it.Is it still there ??. How about a night in there.I know Clarkey has other more important things in his life at the moment but I would love to hear him out again.Hope you pull through.........I keep thinking of clubs to add!!! How about getting a dj from all of the above clubs and throwing a massive allnighter/dayer at the Rivoli in Brockley......
