Another Iconic Location Gone Forever
how very deja vu.....they ( the yanks ) used to throw their records at us...for 30 odd years until they woke up and realized they were giving away a national treasure...and they've been closing studios for decades without so much as an afterthought. they obviously considered memphis and detroit important enough to preserve stax & motown..how can they be so indifferent about philadelphia, a city that blazed a disco trail through the 70's and into the 80's....the two most prominent features consigned to office furniture and glitzy lobbies.....all that wonderful history...and nothing left to show for it....and who's had it away with the t.s.o.p. sign??........pity it's not winging it's way to prestwich!....

Northern Soul The Film Wins Best Film At Nme Awards
well, it's been aired on the "other" channel as well...the horse has well and truly bolted past the winners post for such belated misjudgements...and there are promoters out there who should no better than book this waste of space.

News: Soulbowl
Great stories and anecdotes,..just what was asked for..and i presume this thread hasn't even scratched the surface yet...( hopefully worth several hundred more! ) i, sadly can't add to this..other than to say if in anyway it's of remote interest or irony, the "cheap element" has metamorphosed into what i call john's "dustbin" at prestatyn...and i, like many others i'm sure, can't wait to get their grubby little paws in it from friday onwards!

Atoh Manchester 15Th Feb
hi grant, yeah just to echo what's been said ATOH has been around ages and the playlists have the same dynamic as H&G, GRUMPY, RAFA & a host of others, promoted by people thinking outside the box of regular tunes...love seeing and reading varied sets.....sharp n' vibrant and keeping punters guessing...could somebody possibly design a "chinstrokers soul" patch?

Bafta Awards 2015 - Northern Soul Film in Nominations
have to agree with your comments bro, some people just aren't satisfied with anything..a woman who, along with her husband literally bankrupted theirselves to achieve their goal, has to be acknowledged and applauded for having the determination to go ahead with a project like this...fraught as it would be for anyone who knows the knife is gonna be stuck in and twisted at any given opportunity. i didn't feel disappointment at not seeing the film rewarded, ( i did really! ) just frustrated that well backed competitors always seem to have that edge. Elaine has done us all proud..the paranoid few simply don't get what it is to receive a bafta nomination anyway, that's exactly how well this film was thought of in the first place.....and if it gets the thumbs up from kermode ( like it did )...that's good enough for me anyway.

Al Kent - Or Not Al Kent
i understand the logic in that dave, but why people have to fling names around with gay abandon is really purposeless. the voice in no way sounds familiar compared to most who we know, so my presumption is....it's him, the fact that, as you say, his vocal contributions are lacking, may be due to the fact, that he tried it here and one of his other ric-tic singles...then perhaps thought he wouldn't bother anymore and stuck instead to songwriting and producing.....eddie holland thought had a career in singing, but he ended up the other side of the recording console.......maybe it's him we're listening to then?....i'll stick with al.

Al Kent - Or Not Al Kent
jackie wilson & edwin starr?......some people clutching at straws! if, al kent could sing...then he could sing.....that's all we need to know and the tunes credit his name....so it HAS to be him singing......this is NOT ANOTHER exclusive darrell banks style story........so stop trying to be indiana jones anoraks! ...and it is a great tune...and yes, it should be in everyone's collection...wonderfully atmospheric orchestration..what you expect from detroit and what every city aspired to.

Bafta Awards 2015 - Northern Soul Film in Nominations
the less said about soul boy, the better.....the fact is, elaine was in a position, through her own vast experience and insight, to take her time putting her film together, paying great care to all contributing factors.....painstaking at times...... HOW MANY people are there in this country who could say with all honesty and sincerity, that they could stand up and with conviction announce..they could portray northern soul any better? alas,...it's not 1974 and it's doubtful that anyone then would have considered it worth the folly, sadly a year later footsee broke loose and so did that sceptical bastion of fleet street, the popular press..who never understood it then, and to a large extent, don't now. is it only acceptable then, to produce something of this gravitas, because the scene has served it's time? i passed comment elsewhere about comparisons with sir walter scott and the reintroduction of the kilt & bagpipes nearly a hundred years after "the clearances" well, in the eyes & ears of the masses and the positive march of feet to the cinema doors, id say northern soul is very much in public vogue, it's taken time to be universally loved...but it is...no question. this film rubberstamps that affirmation of love and gratitude.

Bafta Awards 2015 - Northern Soul Film in Nominations
you kept it shorter than my usual edification, but still said exactly the same thing...well said bro, proof the vast majority of us are on the same wavelength...i doubt very much weather even the most vehement doubters will resist cocking an eye at the tv, on sunday evening..even a begrudging smile in the event of a happy outcome....we, the northern soul fraternity are, by our very nature,a complex family, on a par with our musical tastes....elaine's film mirrors that to almost perfection, twisting and turning, with laughs and shocks along the way........let's all hope we have the last laugh on those who said it couldn't be done.

maybe on a saturday stin,...even back then........there was a place for unknown stuff, on a par with how ian & colin operated at the mecca.....pep & max were really on the case with discoveries, so..if any f the one's you suggest, were around even back then, they would almost certainly have got spun at the weekend......on a wednesday.......when i was there?......no

Bafta Awards 2015 - Northern Soul Film in Nominations
yes, i read the article when it was first announced. the film she has created is a reflection of what life was like on the 70's, but from a northern soul perspective. i was simply relating to it, via a personal angle, one which will be duplicated by many my age, up and down the country.

Bafta Awards 2015 - Northern Soul Film in Nominations
we have to be optimistic......this nomination sets a precedent......this music, this scene is an irresistable force.....for this film to win, let alone be nominated for an award, is an undeniable acceptance....FINALLY that it's part of british culture, and deservedly so......broadminded people understand it's place in the wider concept of contemporary music and that it is received with global recognition. to get to this point, to achieve an accolade it has to be put into context, how it all started..that is what this film replicates. a life spent paying homage to northern soul has to be colorful, especially in teenage years, involving experimentation with drugs, styles, drink, sex and the music itself..finding out what it was all about. elaine's film encapsulates life in the north west of england in an era of no prospects other than escapism...we know it's true because we've seen and lived it first hand..i think she's done a brilliant job of giving us a view of our heritage that is as close to real life as is humanly possible. let us all hope it's equally possible for the powers that be, to deliver a long overdue acknowledgement.....in 4 days we will know.
