You Are Invited To An Ovo Venue As A Guest Dj You Can Play 12 Records What Are They ?
I wouldn't do the gig, you can't do a good set with 12 tunes.

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
Apologies then Dylan, I thought you were condoning the playing of an across the board music policy but obviously I was wrong. Sorry about that.

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
I agree it doesn't, but it very rarely happens in my experience. Good taste is open to opinion, but you need to make people want to dance. I don't care what anyone says, that's what the whole scene was based on, "DANCING" I'm not really into soul music per say, I'm into northern, and that means a tune that makes you want to dance. I don't care if the artist is white, yellow, brown or black, or indeed an instrumental, as long as it moves me to want to get up off my arse.

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
Apologies Phil, I missed that post as I was on my soap box...... But yes I agree the bats were a master stroke, and indeed went on to give the venue it's name. However, I did notice some other promoters were trying to steal the name for their own venues, and without realising the time and trouble that I had taken to arrange a coven of bats to perform to rare soul music, at my given signal. The cheek of it...........some people really.............

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
I can't agree with that, unless of course you are talking about all eras and genres, i.e. 60's, 70's, 80's & northern, r&b, modern etc. trouble is, most of us don't enjoy all the genres, so wouldn't support a venue playing it all. Then there's the fact that most people who want to DJ are on a limited budget, so basically you are asking people to travel all over the country, to pay to go into a building and listen to very poor quality and and in more cases than not, their very bad taste, all played on very poor quality, and badly set up equipment. At the end of the day, most events on this scene are "very" amateurish. The promoters will think nothing of paying a small fortune on a 45, yet are quite prepared to play it on any old rubbish. To me if you are expecting people to travel a long way, pay to get in and come on a regular basis, you must make sure they have a good time. 1. The venue must be suitable. Right size, good location, plenty of parking. 2. The sound system must be spot on. 3. You should only employ Dj's who you would travel to hear yourself [not just your mates, or the guy that says all his friends will come if you give him a spot]. And if people ask you for a spot, and you don't rate them. FFS say no.....and if you see that one of your Dj's empty the dance floor for more than a couple of records, go and give him a rocket. All this back slapping and nobody dares to call a spade a spade, is what makes for a stale scene.

Selling On Ebay
No Bob, I think he's saying that he sold it for a third party, and has already paid the third party his money............

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
The crux of the matter is................they are all played out oldies to some people................it depends what era you were out and about the first time around.............then, when you were born again,..............then, where you have been going since being reborn...............one persons up front newie, is another persons played out oldie.............you can never win............I personally find that the people who were on the scene in the 80's, simply know everything [well almost everything] and are impossible to impress.

'local' Events - Too Much Goin On ?
We all used to be dancers........now we are too old and knackered.............so now we are all Dj's.............but we can't get a spot anywhere.............so we start our own night................why is it not packed?..............Too many Chiefs...........not enough Indians. The End.

Knackered Ebay
I agree, don't see it for sale often, and when you do it sells very quickly and usually around £1200. The gold label boot, or re-issue what ever it is, is around though.

Could This Be The Future ?

Help, My Memory's Not What It Was
Just chatting to a mate about tunes, when he says "what was that tune that Butch used to play, same backing track as Yvonne Baker, didn't say a word"? F***k me I can't remember...........didn't it get released, so Butch stopped playing it? Last one I remember getting released was his Barons of Soul. Was the release a slightly different take, or slower or summat? Any help please, it's driving me bonkers now.

Could This Be The Future ?
Karl used to join in with vocals on the mic at Burnley.

Roy Wright - What's The Story?
Ah, thanks Tony, that explains why nobody seems to know about the Vick release. Even Tim Brown has never had it.

Roy Wright - What's The Story?
Yes, that's the one Pete.

Roy Wright - What's The Story?
Just purchased a copy of "Hook Line and Sinker" on Mica for a friend. Looking in the price guide this tune is also on Vick, as is his other recording "you change my whole life around" So, I would imagine that the Vick recording is the original? So what is the Mica release? A boot, a reissue? I have also been informed that the two releases are different takes of "Hook line and sinker"? Anyone have a sound file of the Vick release? It must be a pretty rare 45? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ebay Insanity
I don't understand this...............I know people who have bought records off ebay that played very badly with many pops and clicks. Then I have heard them play that record out, and it has sounded perfect. They said they had the record polished. Surely if a record has many scratches, and is noisy, it will play better when these scratches have been removed?
-
Ebay Insanity
I must be mistaken then.........I thought the idea of polishing / skimming was to make badly scratched records play better? Otherwise there's no point in doing it.

Isley Brothers - Their Best Tracks
Ronald Isley has the voice of an angel, no doubt about that. Their "my love is your love" is a tour de force, and probably one of the most perfectly constructed songs ever written. Never fails to lift my spirits and make me smile. If you want your heart ripped open then this is my fave.
