  1. I actually have a soft spot for the Liberty 45. Although I realise I risk opprobrium and accusations of terrible, outdated taste, I think that if you take an objective view and disregard issues of value, rarity etc, there's not a massive difference in the singing of Liberty and say, The Anderson Brothers. *slips on favourite tin hat*
  2. Good luck with the shop. Sounds fantastic and I'll try my best to check it out when I'm over there in 2015. Even better luck getting an offer for the Orsa Lia 45 - I don't think I even managed to get £5 for it!
  3. I'm just glad that at least one person is paying attention
  4. Can anyone please give me a rough valuation on this cloak of invisibility I'm wearing? As you can see from above it's in full working order and in excellent condition.
  5. I bet he's at home listening to Georgie Fame while chucking his Billy Stewart records in the bin...
  6. Yeah, someone should start a topic on that subject....
  7. Now that we've triumphed against insurmountable odds and discovered that Len Barry is white (just as he looks in all the pictures and film footage of him) what colour eyes do we think Frank Sinatra had...?
  8. If you ask on here you'll get an idea of how Soul Source members value a record (as opposed to various price guide books etc). If what you want is a true idea of what Soul Source members will pay for a record, however, do an advanced search for it on the site and limit the search to the sales area. As long as members follow the guidance in that part of the forum and leave the prices visible you'll get an accurate idea. Since the guidance is relatively new and some people are still deleting prices, I guess it will take a while to really build up to the point where it's invaluable, but it's a good start.
  9. How do we know? You might be a double agent.
  10. Three 45s for sale. PLEASE NOTE: I scanned these records in a glossy black sleeve which turns out to have a scratch on it. This scratch is on the sleeve and not the records. Thank you. 11. Well it's clearly going round in circles and I don't think there's anything left to be said about this particular piece of plastic so I'm locking the topic. Thanks to all for your comments and contributing to a mostly civil debate. About a terrible record
  12. Think you mean anecdote there Dave I have a feeling it was reviewed in Black Music too.
  13. I think I may still have the copy that I found in the shop where I worked in late 70s. Red label with a push-out centre.
  14. Is it this one? It says US copy in the header and then UK copy (twice) in the description. Odd. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111246655964?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D111246655964%26_rdc%3D1
  15. and so it begins
  16. Hey Gordon. Multiple exclamation marks plus a 'ffsk" suggest you're annoyed. I should just make it clear that my intention isn't to personally criticise people who like/play the record (although it probably looked that way in a couple of posts, in which case I apologise), nor am I having a pop at the delightful Ms Fair herself come to that. What I am knocking is this at best mediocre 45 and the attitude that it's ok to play below par records on the basis that they are the right tempo and that people on a night out will dance to them. Last time we did it ended up with TV themes, frat rock and lord knows what. Dalton James and Sutton anybody? (cue someone saying "I really liked "Run Baby', actually...) I understand that context is important but you could also consider that it's easy to slip a substandard record between two good ones and keep the dancefloor going. I don't accept the premise that the only people who dislike the tune are people who never go out. I'd challenge even more strongly the argument that the only alternative to playing low quality records like this is to play "slow dirges' or crossover, which I can take or leave to be honest. To clarify then, I truly believe that there are neglected yet affordable records that are not 'play at home sounds" but are uptempo 60s/70s, traditional Northern or more funky style dancers that are just plain better sounds. Bearsy, Can't argue with the bit in red and I struggle to see how you think that's a poor reason for not playing it. At the end of though day I'm not suggesting that anyone has the right to determine what does and doesn't get played. I started by expressing my surprise that this record would get played, made my case explaining why I think it's not worth playing and, I hope, tested some of the arguments in favour of playing it. On a discussion board However, you'd better be DJing somewhere real soon so that you can submit your report. I reckon I may have to lock this topic in the near future because it will either have run its course and face the risk of dissolving into personal abuse or else some crazed "Walk Out The Door" fan will start writing to me in green ink or maybe stalking me with ransom note style letters cut from magazines...
  17. You have to admire the persistence of this record' supporters which appears to be: it's a bit crap but it exists and you can dance to it so therefore it's worth playing. What about all the better underplayed records. More to the point, what about quality control!
  18. Yep. No comparison. Even Just as Sure As You Pay, which is nice but not a patch on Say Yeah, Yeah wipes the floor with this poor effort.
  19. Me too. Tops Glady's - and that's not something you say every day.
  20. Me too mate. But for more aesthetic reasons than you
  21. Sweeping statement there. I've bought more funk than NS by about 10 - 1 over the last ten years or so - that's funk as opposed to 'Funky Northern' - and that Yvonne Fair wouldn't hit my radar as a "good funky soul tune".
  22. And I commented on the thread! Some detective You never mentioned Pervis Herder though....
  23. Has it got "Love Me Now" on the flip? If there are loads for $6 - 10...
  24. Not deaf - just mainly ornamental
