  1. One sold last week in Rimini for £850, but agree with chalky on rarity v price argument reckon it should be in the £600 bracket but know folk who would pay £800 to £1,000 for it,,,,, worth what you can afford to pay i suppose lol
  2. Intresting comment ! i read a lot of your posts etc and rate you as a very knowledgable person with decent taste, im not having a go or questioning your preference but would like to understand why you feel this track should be landfill ? is it the tempo. instrumentation, vocal or the fact its basically so commercial now as its played everywhere... i really am intrested in your opinion and explanation m8, regards charlie
  3. I think the major point here is not the fact it takes the pressure of kenny to play it but if tom dick & harry are around the country playing it on a boot then it looses its wow factor and exclutivity, because no longer do you have fave dj,s you have to follow round the country because you can hear the tunes anywhere........ yet another bit of the scene thats eroded over the years
  4. I'm not asking this specifically of you Charlie, it's just a discussion point on a wet wednesday afternoon gr8 post common sence and courtesy is all thats required ,i think you put that senario brilliantly and hit the nail on the head. I dont know whats wrong with me lately i should know much better than to openly post opinions on forums lol ..... anyway its nice to see that an opinion can be debated without being personal or ramming it down somebodys throat, good post Winnie
  5. I dont think i explained what i was trying to say correctly or maybe i have and youve got the wrong end of the cane lol..... i wasnt having a pop at anybody bying tunes in whatever format, what i was asking was is it ok to play them out at a venue, i think in this day and age it doesnt matter quite so much about format but like i say play a fiver pressing in the same hall as the guy with a 5,000 original, and he,s gonna be a bit peeved
  6. Ok we all have valued and justified opinions & each to his own but theres only really 1 thing of any importance here really. your djing at a venue with say 6 other dj,s and your dying on your feet as the crowds just not responding so you dig in the box and pull the pressing of Eddie Parker i,m gone throw it on the decks, the floors rammed packed and its your last record the guy on next happens to have the original and its pulled up ready to play as his opening tune ! he gently nudges you you and says i was going to open with the original of that which took me 25 years to own and i eat beans on toast for a month to buy it so do you think, big deal i got the crowd going or do you think oops i should never have played that its not fair ? the guys spent a lifetime and sacrificed loads to biuld his collection, it matters not what anybody else thinks really its what you think as an individual, theres is no right or wrong theres just an opinion All i would add is that if you want to play pressings be prepared to be attacked or ridiculed from those that used blood sweat and tears to put an original collection together.............
  7. isnt the point of having multiple dj,s variation of music ? its no different than what roger banks done with r&b but he stayed with it some followed and in my mind created a sub culture within the northern fraternity this so called funky edged soul seems to be taking off and theres a demand for it so stick by your guns Joel its not my cuppa really but the scene needs guys like you and may i add you didnt abuse your position and ram it down peoples throats you said you played 6 ..... spot on something for everyone ,my kinda dj
  8. yes pete thats the one, jesse james not fisher lol we got there in the end so quick recap the arcades theres got to be a loser jesse james are you gonna leave me impressions i,m the one who loves you phew that was hard work .... thanks for the nudge
  9. told you my head was mush lol i meant the impressions not jackie wilson
  10. The arcades theres got to be a loser Jackie wilson i,m the one who loves you and theres another with the same backing but my memmory,s mush, when i remember i,ll add it (jessie fishers ringing a bell but i,ll chk)
  11. i should know better than to post on these forums as opinions are so diverse, just like your comment on doowop i think the harmonies in this type of music are spine tingling yet i believe by reading your comments that your a true soulie with a good knowledge so i suppose weve answered our own question that soul is not defined by a word it is an emotion a feeling etc and were all individual and diverse which is what i love about soul...... i,d like to add that i enjoyed your responce very much because it was written with respect not contempt, for this i praise you. Intrestingly enough what floats my boat now are the gr8 midtempo soulful tracks like moses smith, glen millar, guitar ray etc etc yet in my younger days throw on d d barnes do what ya wanna do and i was there regards charlie
  12. pmsl well that would depend who,s in your house i suppose ,if it was only you then id have no chance of filling the floor anyway lol............. all in all i wasnt saying it was the best tune just that most venue,s ive been to it always seems to work , but then ive never been very good at playing played out oldies over and over to a full dance floor
  13. intresting responce that as i see where your both coming from esp[ecially with your statement about russ lol, but there is a valid point that not all things northern are soulful, there was a lot of sixties dance music in there which wasnt in the least bit soulful it was 4 beats to the bar out and out beat driven dross, but on the same observation there was many tunes that were so so soulful ....... thats what i love about everything is the diversity of meanings and interpetations of the gr8 music we call soul
  14. well one of the best slabs of soul for me has to be either four tops still waters smokey & miracles ooh baby baby or al green how do you mend a broken heart, if were talkin mega expensive tunes i honestly cant answer as every time i think ive heard the ultimate a new one hits my ears so ill stick with the quality rather than rarity but if pushed probably william cummings make my love a hurting thing or george lemons facinating girl
  15. What is soul to me ? Well it,s a feeling an emotion, something that makes me happy or sad depending on many things, feeling a vibe in a hall full of people enjoying themselves, as your eyes gaze across a dancefloor as they do there thing, that little smile and change of facial expression as they hear the first note of a favourite tune, i,ve seen me watching somebody dancing to a record i hate but took gr8 pleasure outta of watching there enjoyment, i dont really think that the majority of northern soul stompers ooze soul in a musical sence but they can make you feel a massive buzz inside, which i suppose is your soul coming to the surface ?. i know when i hear the M.V.P.s or Chubby checker something happens inside of me which elevates me to dance and makes my hairs stand yet i wouldnt say they were soulful sounds, listening to Al greens how can you mend a broken heart or Four tops still waters does something else to me and then theres music like to be in love by masters at work that make me wanna tap my toes and touches my soul, theres so many examples of music which brings an emotion to the surface so i guess soul to me is something that gives me a inner feeling , regards charlie
  16. carstairs, it really hurts me girl will fill a floor anywhere !
  17. Just a belated thought to add to previous rantings, i,ve gotta say that theres not many places i go which hold that electric atmosphere we used to all take for granted, in recent years ive been to many nights over the country and they,ve been very flat although some of the music has been outstanding , without naming some of the so called bigger nights i have to say that lifeline in particuliar held that magic mix of atmoshere music and attendance, also the djs seemed to play to the crowd mixing monsters with lesser known and it worked well, but it was the crowd that made that work the dj bounced of the crowd and vice versa, not many places got that now unfortunatley ............ easy to do with a big night billed as an oldies night and playing top 500 but ver near impossible to do with across the board take it as it comes policy, HATS OFF TO LIFELINE, youve cracked it
  18. Well Ian i wish i could write as eliquently as you lol (i think i shoulda looked that word up in the dictionary b4 writing it) Anyway to respond to your question of who could get away with a £10 record in amongst a boxfull of ultra rare stuff, Soul sam would be the first name to come to mind playing things like the bamboos, tighten up at lifeline followed by william cummings make my love a hurting thing would be a gr8 example ...... on listening to both tracks i can see how they work, one a all time classic tune which is a personal fave and the other a stomping take on a Archie bell anthem which just oozes life and energy, hats off to the man who i dont always enjoy but always respect, hope that helped , look forward to your company again, regards charlie
  19. Well Mr Dewhurst i have been reading this thread with intrest and taking on board all the posts just to get a general feel where its coming from and now seems like a good time to respond, Firstly i dont believe the audience and way of life is there for a newby to make it as a top dj, just look at the age difference attending soul nights etc, in fact is there groups of 14 to 3o year olds having soul nites down the local church hall/community centre ? i think not, drugs have been replaced by drink, attendance been frittered away by age and life, so what was once a dance scene is now a social nite out, the music has been pigeon holed into sub categorys croosover/modern/deep/newies/ oldies etc which has created seperate venues rather than across the board, so all this and more taken into account the scenes dying or dead lol, I dont think it has anything to do with money or stage presence etc i just think the crowd and way of life has changed over the years to make it impossible to become a major name that rolls of the tounge, we all could probably name at least 20 people who could put sets together that would be a privalige to hear anywhere but the atmosphere and excitement isnt there any more to embrace and accept in numbers ..... i know i havent written this very well but i suppose the point im making is as long as i can remember guys like searling, sam, guy, keb, winstanley and so many more, could come on at whatever time of nite and set a floor alight ,the sad thing was most were dancing to the dj not the tune, they had a massive head start because they were playing it, ive seen it so many times tunes played by unknowns to a empty floor then played by a big jock to a full floor ? did the record change when it was played by a different person on a different deck ? its the crowd that makes a dj not a dj making a crowd........ anyway in my head i know what i,m trying to say lol, regards charlie
  20. What an artist just truly subline and makes every song his own, one of my faves by him is his version of paul robinsons OL, MAN RIVER quality
