Its logical to assume that there are or have been test pressings of most things, the obvious difference is the acetate is the output of the recording studio session, and a test pressing the output of the pressing plant. I'd imagine most test pressings are thrown away as soon as they're done and checked.

My next monthly Sunday Morning Soul show goes out on Sunday 6th January at 10.a.m. on Solar radio. (Sky 0129). This month we're featuring legendary songwriter / producer Ken Williams. With an amazing pedigree of songs to his name I caught up with Ken just before Xmas so you can hear about some of the groups he worked with (and there are many!) including one that had a singer that looked liked Doctor Spock! I'll be playing plenty of his productions and songs from Bobby Treetop, Spellbinders, Superiors, Main Ingredient, Margaret Reynolds, J.R.Bailey, Chuck Proffitt, Ike Lovely etc etc. You'd be amazed at how many great records Ken was behind. Interesting, was in touch with him a couple of weeks ago. He did some fabulous productions over the years.

I didn't realise Dear Glove had it that far back.....I am certain he didn't have (m)any for sale.....or else I would have picked it up then rather than a couple of years ago.

So the REDS weren't so much "modern soul", as Grapevine's attempt at contemporary soul of the time. You'll see that the Grapevine 2000 label did exactly the same thing with a "red" series earlier this century. They also came out while the label was still in existance 79 /80. Didn't the last yellows come out in 81? Actually Nick, Doc Peabody Part 2 is quite neat - not a straight instrumental, it's like a jazzy workout with great strings, guitars and organ and more of that wailing. Certainly worth putting on the playlist for Sketchley Grange Sunday....if I didn't want to play Part 1! Thing is, these things were totally unknown at the time, no internet, and nobody knew whether any more would ever turn up. No one here had ever played any of the tracks etc. So ya bought them while they were there. If you didn't you might not see them again.....but the internet changed all that.. .

Yes quite right, red / pink label came first. Two years earlier. Track listing is slightly different - not "poor" at all Wayne. What happened was that John A had a small run on the album (pink copies) that he got from Dyson himself - 15-25 copies which he sold @ £15 each. I remember him saying the run was short and he probably wouldn't get any more. Stuart, I and 13-23 others brought them within a week of them arriving in Kings Lynn; it was one of those where John put a copy on the "pile" of everyone who was turning up that he thought had taste.....we championed the album in Blackbeat at the time too.

Dyson was putting stuff out as and when he could, adding tracks etc. Not uncommon, they are on his label and he probably sold them locally at gigs etc. I did know the full story once, I'll see if I can find it.

Those were the days eh Ian? I got caught with one of those too Steve when I was a kid from some tosser in Wolverhampton. I asked for confirmation of a stamped original and he sent me the dodgy stamped 2nd press. We only had mail then, no email and no mobiles and he never answered me after that.

I don't know Chalky, I am sure there's a few tales we could tell of Mick H on the "lash" in Europe :lol: As for Soussan: Fight at the Mecca and Ian taking the glass and saving Soussan's pretty face is the most interesting part for me. What was that all about? Didn't Soussan also DJ at Casino once? And was he ever officially "outed" as Russ's mysterious "Uncle in Florida" who was sending sounds over every week. Maybe all for another thread - "Leg-Ends we love to hate" ?

Yes Flynny - one of the few times we ventured West to Yate via Southampton (to pick up Pete "Winkleman" )....same night we had to stop at The Widd's grandma's house on the way home......I remember it like yesterday, but I cannot remember half the titles in the Soussan / McCutcheon box - funny that!....We were essentially Wiganites because it was easier to get a train to. Yate in the middle of nowhere.
