Jimmy James And The Vagabonds
Theres a really good track on the B side of "Now is the time" which you should be able to get for the price of....10p at your local boot fair. It's also on one of his elpees. An under-rated "Biddu" thing.

New Sounds " New Sounds "
Ah yes it's well known amongst the secret squirrels of the rare soul scene that the Ultimates LP is to be avoided on account of abyssmal sound. We should have pre warned you about that

New Sounds " New Sounds "
Yeah but mastering was by the Robinsons - we see it time and time again with their early output. They didn't get a decent production deck until oooh 1974-5 I reckon when they started having all those big hits....and this pre dates that. AGree both versions are recorded poorly and the reissue will blow out the woofers on many speakers. It's Robert Tanner on lead on "Sweet memories" as well.

So What Makes A Good Promoter?
Agreed we're all tone deaf m8. But also v difficult to gauge sound from behind decks, as we all know it sounds totally different in front of and aft speakers particularly where a stage is involved. Hence soundmen always check what it sounds like on the floor as opposed to from behind the decks.

Does Modern Soul Suck?
My Dear Cat - it really depends on the context. In the context of 60's soul then yes modern soul is 70s soul. In the context of the fact that soul has continue to be made until now then 70s soul isn't modern at all. After years of questioning it I must say I'm ok now with calling 70's soul "modern soul".... I never knew modernsoulsucks was Rod Shard - he of that great record stall in Manchester fame. Sam still talks affectionately about the rekkids he's had out of there!!!

So What Makes A Good Promoter?
Frankly getting a drink foir DJing is taking the piss - unless the DJ has agreed in advance to do it for nowt (and that can happen with a friends venue / specialist type do for example). I say (as a former promotor) anyone who doesn't pay their DJ's properly is having a larf at their expense.

New Sounds " New Sounds "
Classic Sylvia Robinson crappy ampex 2 track recording like so many on Turbo / Stang / All Plat etc. - you cannot get a good recording of this without digital remastering.

So What Makes A Good Promoter?
Think you've summed it up for me. Poor decks and a crappy system are a real turn off for any DJ - let alone the punters suffering a fuzzy mumbly sound. And those that don't pay properly - should be named and shamed. I've promoted in the past and one of the golden rules is always make sure you have enough dosh to pay the DJs, regardless of whether no one turns up on the night. Some promotors are very good like this, others maybe not so it seems.

Where's The Best Place To Sell Rare Deep Soul Us 45's
Agreed day time sessions are best for this - dancers tend to be more nocturnal Ensure no "glass" or sharp objects about and keep a first aid nurse on hand for any wrist-slashers. Also notepads and pencils should be on hand for the trainspotters Soul Essence with it's old armchairs and a seperate room seems to work well for this form of music - and keep the volume down deep and sweet doesn't need to be played so loud as to cause aural discomfort. Let's do it then!

It Brings Tears To Your Eyes
Thanks. As for yours the seller said he'd use a heavy duty corrugated LP shipper - doesn't sound like he did?
-
It Brings Tears To Your Eyes
How does this work then? - I've got one that's gone AWOL from a reputable seller. I have no doubt he sent it but it hasn't arrived.

Murdered With An Axe
Undoubtebly you are right on that point Col - however you NEED to hear this played out..... loud and over a decent system. Then and only then will you understand the power of the electric guitar. Steve

It Brings Tears To Your Eyes
Paul Tell the guy you want a full refund due to inadequate packing. Leave negative feedback if he doesn't agree - complain to ebay - stir it up and give him some welly. Why do we Brits suffer in silence at such b*llock service.
-
Murdered With An Axe
No No No SoulSmith - you just don't get it do you? The guitar absolutely makes it - you should see us all doing "air guitars" to this bit whenever it gets played. It's King Moses himself on guitar as well - quite excellent. Steve

Where's The Best Place To Sell Rare Deep Soul Us 45's
Thanks Binsy, yeah that's a fantastic record love his voice on it, and funnily enough it was in the Yarmouth playbox but I don't think I got round to it. I paid a serious wedge for that record, but it's one I just had to have. Probably worth £10 now based on this thread

Where's The Best Place To Sell Rare Deep Soul Us 45's
When's the BBQ Plumby? - sounds like we have enough people / interest for a real deep soul fest. I'll bring the beers But you have to ensure there are no knives nearby - don't want any unplanned wrist cutting

Where's The Best Place To Sell Rare Deep Soul Us 45's
Agreed garethx. Just as sad the fact that Rodney Hall and son won't let anyone near the Fame catalogue. They live under the deluded and parochial belief that no one can afford to pay the true price to re release their priceless catalogue on CD. Meanwhile while they continue tossing around in their own little private world the music is slowly dying. s. I am not sure at this point whether deep soul will ever come back as a music form. The only venue that plays any is the "Lounge" at SE and you are really down to a hardcore. With summer coming why not invite a few of us round your gaff for a beer and bar-b-q party- Gouch, Fraser, Gareth, Butch, Dean, Pat etc etc (apologies to those not mentioned). we'll sit in your garden drinking buds and listening to these fine tunes, and you maybe even sell a few

Flashpoints
Memory not dodgy at all, I was running Blackbeat at the time and the letters page was full of it 60s v 70s/80s and then oldies v newies. There was never a dull moment

Leola Jiles
Quite good girly northern sort of thing, maybe a bit girly for some

Are These Cover Up's ?
It is quite a nice record. Chris Teller's like a girly Motown sounding thing. Derek did you get the article ok?
-
Peterborough Wirrina Songs
Yup remember that, and also tore the roof off with "Where I'm not wanted" of course. Mark is also right about Bunny Sigler - I remember interviewing him for Blackbeat there. Jr Walker was also on. Heady days indeed! Should start a new thread "Soul nights in Peterborough"....
