Just about the most obscure of records are the late 78's (early to mid 60's) from countries such as Pakistan, India & the Philippines (maybe more countries as well; Singapore & the like ?). EMI were a strong force in the likes of Pakistan & India and so lots of UK pop (+ US stuff licensed in by EMI UK) escaped in those areas, but sales figures weren't huge at the time & many of the discs have broken down the years. Seems to have been lots of different Coral, RCA, Imperial, Columbia, Decca, Sun, MGM , Cameo & Parkway plus some Motown stuff made available there. Most folk don't collect 78's though lots of 40's / 50's jazz cuts are collectable coz they are the 'original format' for those tracks. Here's a montage of some interesting Philippine 78's .......

I was going to niters from 66 onwards (till around 70/71 at least) ...... I don't recall seeing any skinheads at clubs like the Mojo, Nite Owl, Crystal Bowl (all too early for skins) or the Wheel.

Our kid (smudger on here) should know sumat bout Dony skinheads back arounf 69/70 as some of his school mates were local skins. At least, he used to fetch em round to our house to buy reggae 45's off me.

Last I heard the D.E.Temptations Review also featured David Sea (great singer, loads of brill MS sides), Mike Potello, Chris Arnold and Paul Williams Jr.(son of original Temptations member Paul Williams). They are known for putting on a better show than Otis & his bunch.

She did. They toured together for 3/4 years (late 40's / early 50's) & even recorded together -- they performed gospel stuff as would be expected. I skirted over much of her gospel period but did make a mention of this .............. .... In 1950, together with Rosetta Tharpe, she sang before an audience of thousands of gospel fans at a big show in Washington.

We'd know even more about the Lovations and Segue Records if only you had asked us back in 1987 ..... ....... when the label's Nathan Davis was in London a couple of times & we could have asked him ................

"Storm Warning" is included on the Arctic CD track listing ................ but you'll be pleased to know that its not one of the tracks that will be on the proposed 'ewn reissue' 45's .........

That would be the same Earl English & the Apaches who had the 45 out on Six Toe (& on Big 8) ............. What does the 'Midwest Funk' LP notes have to say about him & the group (can't find my copy at present) ??

The guys behind these tracks (Earl English & Jack Hill) went on to sign some of their later tracks to Invictus Records (Earl English -- "Wanting You") in 1974. Thomas Associates (who are 'credited' with producing their Invictus sides) also leased the Hi-Lites tracks to Invictus in 74 (Philly's Keith Barrow wrote that song) and T.A. were also responsible for the Tom Green UK Action 45 tracks.

Frank only wants to sell it as 'the whole damn thing'. Doesn't stop people buying the set & 'breakin it up' to sell on ....... the Cd's to folk that buy CD's & the 45's on ebay for $$$$$$

An update on this proposed release ................. Now due December 11th and it will be quite pricey ...... ....... but you do get 6 x CD's PLUS 6 x 45's PLUS a 48 page booklet full of facts. Lots of artists represented including the main ones + the likes of Cindy Gibson, Herb Johnson, Jack & Jill, Ike & Mike, etc. SOME unrelease stuff ain't made it onto the set though (mainly coz a 'finished master' couldn't be found) ..... so you will not get to hear the 'unfinished' Kenny Hamber & Barbara Mason duet cut ... .... or .... .............. ...... .............. the 'unfinished' Winfield Parker & Barbara Mason duet cut To launch the CD a New York gathering / show has been arranged for December 6th .... for press types & artist guests only ..... Frank has organised a coach to take lots of people up from Philly. Kenny Hamber will be performing at the event ...... .... others in attendance will include Winfield Parker, members of the Volcanoes, Ambassadors, Honey & the Bee, etc. Kenny has told me that he can take a couple of guests along, so if you're near NY and can make it on that evening, drop me a pm and I'll put a couple of SSers in touch with Kenny to see if he will take you along (or have your names added to the guest list).

I've loved this track since I bought a copy of the UK 'Rare Stamps' Stax LP as a new release.

"Feeling Yourself" is not be be recommended at your age sir !!! My bank account ain't doing too well today and may also need a full transplant ...... I blame that Nige Flood for telling me about the John Smedley shop in Matlock (which I visited yesterday).

Not related to any 70's reissue ...... but the new Arctic box CD set (originally set for release this month but now slipped back to the new year I believe) will come with a number of reissue Arctic 45's ................... ............ so watch out for another 'Numero style' set of gripes from the OVO set.

Straying a bit off topic now .... but the music's still fine ..... The Silhouettes "Red Snow" ............ fine jazz funk ..............

Another jazz outfit who were on Segue Records was the highly rated recording outfit the Silhouettes. The Silhouettes group leader was George Bacasa & he put out the group’s 1st 45 on his own Bye George label. The core of the group was from the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA and it consisted of Bacasa (flute & sax), Ronnie Thomas (bass) and Al Secen (vibes). The Silhouettes eventually went on to record the "Red Snow" single on Western World Records and the LP 'Conversations with the Silhouettes' which was produced by Nathan Davis for Segue Records. They also had a 45 out on the label ................
