How Do You File Your Collection?
A rare-soul record collecting, Disney artist who also worked for the U.N? That is a story! I've often thought SS should have a 'featured' section re its members. I'm too young to know most peoples histories first hand, or, in some cases their massive contribution to the scene (aside from the obvious few), but you pick bits up as you flick through the topics on the site and I love it. I for one would enjoy it though some would find it a touch intrusive to speak more broadly off topic, as you'd expect. For me it adds to the scene to find out someone is a Prof, a Disney artists, or a character like Simon Soussan.

Has Anyone Ever Counted?
I think its far to subjective. You could argue that the JM price guide would be a good starting point and even then they'd be arguments over what might be an R&B record etc and what is 'Northern', plus the countless new plays and nuances in what can be categorised as a the northern sound. An example that comes to mind is 'Mark Putney - Don't come around here anymore/Today's Man on Ovide. I'd argue both sides are...funky-northern, ha! Some would say something else.

How Do You File Your Collection?
Same Dean - my mates laugh at me because on the whole, I can't remember what I have, however, If I hear a tune I know if I own it or not and when I'm playing them I associate the record label (colour etc) with a sound and I know what to play next...rather than the artist name. Becomes a little embarrassing when someone ask's what I've got on the deck and I don't know... also I've got all my records arranged in colour sleeves - so the play box for an evening looks like this... Yellow - Gospel Pink - Funk Blk - R&B White - Northern Purple - Latin Green Crossover Red - Modern Blue - Bangers - current in-demanders etc

Simon Soussan Found
I've been reading about this guy on here...so interesting, a real character! as for that record on Bell - I've got it. Its a Demo issue only, I think. Red text and a black text issue. The flip is a hot record called "you make everything better". I think its fairly expensive now.

Joe Dutton Aka Pikeys Dog Rip
What a gentleman! He really was. I'd always look forward to the Hamburg weekender knowing I'd spend a good amount of time with 'Tiki Joe' and his great mates (him and Shane particularly, were like a double act). There were always good-natured laughs and talking about records/trainers and everything else.... I'll miss his gentleness, wisdom and cheeky spirit. RIP Joe. My thoughts are with his family. Gary

Real Soul Clubs Where Are They
Pretty varied mix of things - reflected in the DJ's on offer. Personal preference is all genres in one room...all night. A lot of nights say they'll do it, but generally lean more toward one specific genre which tends to be up tempo...not always, but you go off what the punters want, I guess, plus the DJ's on the bill, and eventually you carve out an 'affiliated sound'.

Up Front?
I had a bash at explaining it here, albeit in a specific context (£25.00 records) though the premise of the article was to challenge the perceived idea of the term "up front". https://www.soul-source.co.uk/articles/soul-articles/£2500-and-under-the-challenge-r2929 In a broad sense, I think the notion of up-front culture within the soul scene, and I say culture because it extends beyond genre for me, is the overall approach to the music / venue / aesthetic. For example, you wouldn't have an upfront night with loads of baggies, and you wouldn't really want to hold it in a damp working mans club. So i'd argue that its part of a shift in the scene on the whole - more city centre based, free entry (doing away with old promotion cartels and the bullying that goes on about 'someones patch'). I wouldn't say its a largely younger movement though...but I od think it has a lot to do with the space thats used! N.B. Sorry for the typos in the attached link, i'd written the article on the train, on my phone.

£25 And Under Dj Sets
I had exactly the same issue with Sam from the Blk Bee - I've got the Green Issue version on Elf which is more 'electronic sounding' if thats the right description. And I was sat there thinking...this sounds familiar...I'm sure i've got it. In the box for tomorrow - across the board soul sounds!

Great Unknown Gospel Soul 45 ?
Love it. There is a great pub near my house, and across the road is the 'Mountain, Fire and Miracles Ministry' (check the site - interesting stuff) - sounds like something from Harry Potter. Anyway, fairly often you can hear gospel/soul not at all dissimilar to this - sat in the beer garden on a sunny Sunday its actually very pleasurable - big sound systems, really good singers and accompaniments and they're at it for hours! Its nuts when you really think about it because the place looks like a warehouse but all good with a pint from the outside https://www.churches-uk-ireland.org/images/manc/manc/mfmm.jpg

Price Please
I'd say somewhere in between the two prices above. I love that deep, flat trombone (?) that is peppered throughout the song.

Bully for you and your 30k records. I was meant to edit the post but I forgot. Not sure why I had 300K in mind because I had just read it, oh well.
