  1. Keele wasn't like what we had been fed throughout the 80's where 60's newies was the mantra and each DJ did his bit to find the next big thing. The attitude of those who went was there in so far as we had a good night out socially, nowhere else to go kinda thing but the attitude of the DJ's of the previous decade definately wasn't there. It was as though they missed out that decade completely bar the biggies and returned to oldies completely. It would only be a year or two and the mass influx of returnees and a lack of diversity even amongs the oldies.
  2. Keele for me was the beginning of the end, a return to mass oldies. Great venue, great record bar and a bloody good laugh but musically a massive step backwards.

Apparently it was picked up at a record fair in the US for $20! Almost mint as well.

I don't hold much hope to be honest Steve

    it's Mello!
  8. There are some photos of my flickr page, the link is in my signature.
  9. She left the stage in tears apparently, totally overwhelmed by the fantastic reception she received. It must be one of the best greetings I've heard given to an artist in along time at a weekender.

Freddie Scott was £25 in one box at the weekend.
  11. We know that Steve, others don't....off to do something more productive.
  12. Yes I have met her and I know a few tales about her too. She stopped with mates of mine when she came over here to perform. Again, a DJ forty years later on another continent playing a second hand record isn't the industry is it that has ripped her off!!
  13. I know you did Ian. I simply don't see how some can liken a DJ playing a forty year old second hand record in another country 1000's of miles away the same as the record industry that ripped the artist off.
  14. There are some great Unsung documentaries. Marvin Gaye, The Life and Death is on BBC4 this coming Friday.

I have the templates for 7 inch large and small hole and for 12 inch, they are adobe illustrator documents.
  16. Most venues pay their license for entertainment as far as I am aware Ian but that is between the venue and the authorities. As for ripping the artist off a DJ isn't depriving them of any record sales income, they were paid what they agreed at the time. We're talking 40 year old second hand records!! As Dave said some really do need to lighten up a bit here. As for Betty, she has probably had more exposure because of the UK soul scene. Most of the artists receive little or no recognition for what they did back in the US. I know many artists who are more than grateful what UK Dj's and promoters have done for them.
  17. And just what would Betty LaVette do about a DJ covering her record up if that ever was to happen?

Tim Fletcher (TOAD on here) has or had an issue.
  19. Actually Steve, I realised that about after the first topic on this subject, this must be topic 57 or something
  20. I like what I like Pete, there's plenty I don't like of all genres. I simply don't dismiss something like many do on here when they haven't even heard it or because it was made after December 1969. Many slag off the venues that play across the board when they've never been anywhere except places like Kings Hall and other oldies nights. You see it in many topics, thats why many don't bother on here. It is a fantastic club btw
  21. There is a whole host of collectors of soul music of all genres Pete, many don't get involved on here, especially the Europeans, because of a lot of the sh*t that occurs on many of the topics. Go on some of the facebook groups and they are involved there simply because it is less hassle.
  22. Northern Soul is also a global scene something many insular UK residents don't realise or accept. Northern Soul isn't a genre, it takes from various genres and funk or funk edged Soul has been played for decades, it is nothing new. I don't think anyone particular style will ever work on this scene, many records are tried, the good is kept the chaff forgotten until trends change again.

Was he the James Hendrix who owned Carrie records? or was there another?
  24. It isn't meant to deceive in a callous deceitful illegal money making scam way though is it. Is simply meant to put people off finding the disc for a period of time while some exclusivity is kept by the DJ or collector who has put the work in finding the rare record(s) in the first place. Whether it remains rare once uncovered is another matter. Most of the top end DJ's covering records up are covering up rare records that are part of their set, not ripping anyone off, not even the artists.
