  1. Bi of a bargain compared to what some copies have one for lately. Still all it's worth in reality, just demand pushing the price.
  2. That post is over two years old and way out on the prices today. You will be lucky to get either for less than £100 never mind in dollars. The above post should be the case though as it isn't that rare, plenty of copies have been on the market and continue to come up for sale.
  3. It could quite easily be someone who knows full well what they have taken and now have one of the best collections around. Hopefully it is some dimwit townie who won't have a clue what he has got.
  4. Gutted for Craig, hope he gets them back.
  5. I don't think there is anything wrong with voicing an opinion, on the scene, then or now, as long as you are involved and can back up your argument with reasoning and fact. We can all pass comment on the quality of a record, or lack of, that is subjective and something we can all involve ourselves in by simply having a listen. But too many have a pop at things, particularly an era, then or now, that they were not or are not involved with. Whatever you think of fanzines, they are what was happening, a viewpoint of someone who was there and of someone who cared enough to put pen to paper, be that Pete Lawson, Jock, Derek Pearson, Dave Rimmer, Pete Smith, Steve G, Rod Dearlove or anyone else who gave up their free time to produce a fanzine for others to read. they document the scene at that particular time, more often than to it was our youth and probably our best time on the scene depending on which fanzine you remember best. I will have a scour in the garage and see what I can do next flor you, might do a couple of he early Shades of Soul. Quite a few SOS though I put a spiral binder on within a plastic cover so might prove tricky to do those.
  6. That maybe so but I prefer to base my prices on actual dealer to collector sales rather than an auction were it is very easy to get carried away if you want a record so bad.
  7. You only have to look at Discogs to see how prices on LPs can vary greatly. Usually the US dealers are the cheapest, UK dealers at the bottom as the most expensive more often than not. I'd like to see a price guide for Lp's if only for reference.
  8. I would think around £40 for Luther.
  9. There's a sound clip on the actual article.
  10. I had a feeling it was earlier than I said but as wasn't sure at all. The two an half anniversary would be back end of 1984. If you want to get a second issue done Jock give us a shout and ill help in any way I can I still have the Shades Of Soul in the garage and the Detroit ones of Graham Anthony, maybe one day I will do those when I am a man of leisure (never knowing my luck ).
  11. When did you/Guy first play this Gilly? And didn't Dave Hamilton take you to James Lately's house and you met his mother?

Charles Mintz - Candy Baby is an unissued track Andy Dyson got about ten years or so. They are all now on the Uplook Records Story cd Grapevine put out a few years ago.
  13. Early 90's I think, could be bit before, sure Jock will fillin the details when he see's this.
  14. Jock (jocko on here) wrote a fanzine back in the distant past, he'll tell you the exact date, anyway along with pete Lawson's magazines I also converted Jock's View Of Soul (Scottish Edition) to PDF and ebook. If you fancy a read on your iPad or similar device or even on you computer the PDF and ebook versions are available on my website https://www.soulunderground.co.uk/magsandreviews/

I've had the above link to the blog in my faves for some time and knew of the time line for the group so was just wondering if it was them or another, highly probably another unless the dates are wrong? Damn good blog though if you like garage, lot of related material to read. All good stuff

Just found this on the site from someone who knew John Bowie...... Hello, Concerning John Bowie. He was lead singer for The Philadelphians; a Philly R&B group of the late fifties and sixties. The Philadelphians used to rehearse at The Community Center located at 10th and Thompson Sts. of The Cambria Hgts. projects. In 1962, I met Big John and members of The Philadelphians at the center. I had a R&B group called The Premieres from The Richard Allen Projects near The Cambria Hgts Projects. Members of The Philadelphians were Big John as lead, Frank Gordon as bass, Sam as second tenor, and Eddie as first tenor. I don't remember the name of the baritone singer. They recorded for Campus Records, Cameo-Parkway and Jamie-Guyden with such recordings as Dear, The Love I Lost, I Missed Her, Coming Home To You, The Vow, Church Bells and My Love- My Love. The Premieres were a new group starting out and they helped us a lot to win a local talent show at The B&R club. We won a chance to record at a Jamie Record Studio on Girard Ave where we recorded "Devil Woman b/w Don't Leave Me". However, our manager then took the tapes of the recording to New York and we never saw him again. Disillusioned, the group disbanded and I went on to sing bass for The Informers (If You Love Me and Baby Set Me Free on J-Rude and Blackjack labels). After retuning home from the military in 1973 I ran into Frank Gordon at a movie theater where he told me that The Philadelphians had split up and John was doing some production and solo work. Big John had did some work with The Delchords out of Harrisburg, Pa. This group was the origin of The Magnificent Men (Peace Of Mind). There also was some word that Big John did some production work with The Three Degrees. Big John later went on to be Little John Bowie on Merben label. I read an article by David Brown from Philly Archives/ Funkadelphia Records written for Scoop newspaper in Philly that Big John had died from a robbery attempt at a gas station where he worked. This article was dated in the 1998 and had the approximate date of death about 1985. As for the other members, according to David Brown, they may all have passed. He didn't know their names. In talking with him I gave him the names I remembered. I hope this info is helpful. I am currently singin bass with a group called Quiet Storm. We sing R&B/Soul from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Perhaps you will hear of us soon. Take Care. Kamau Akiba ( formerly Henry "Smitty" Smith )

John of John and the Weirdest is Johnny Hendley. John Bowie was a member of the Philadelphians.
  23. Hi, Can you please use the actual event posting in the calendar for all further comments and reminders. This topic is showing on the front page in rotation with a cople of other topics so doesn't need bumping. Event topic can be found at Thanks.
  24. Neil brown played it at Burnley, I remember that one It was played at last Lifeline I think and I've heard it out once or twice in recent times. Still danceable regardless what others think. I dare say most of the mainstream crowd don't even know it and would be scared of getting up to dance as it would be new to them.
