  1. 99% of DJ's on this scene are simply collectors, intact I can't think of one professional DJ? Not one who makes his money simply by DJing at Northern/Rare/Modern soul events?
  2. At the end of the day Matt it will never change for the mainstream Northern Soul event, most want one type of music all-night, uptempo and 60's. They don't mind the odd variation as long as it is in the style of the classics. Stray to far away even for a few records and people don't want to know, they have no patience and don't care others might be enjoying the music being played. It is a very selfish scene with little patience and no or little inclination for anything other than the norm. We can say what we like on here but the reality is much of what is being discussed here will be restricted to side rooms unfortunately and events that cater for a minority. At least until a large part of the scene disappear once again but I fear that might be too late.
  3. The main reason we moved was cost. A venue the size of the Bell and the outlay in DJ's fee's, equipment etc couldn't be recovered and the dance floor was too small. Great venue for a soul night maybe but not an all-nighter. The conversion and renovation of the rooms didn't effect us really. We got a fantastic deal on the room, £20 a night!! End of the day the manageress didn't want ht hassle of an all-nighter, same with many venues. Many venue owners are just not interested as soon as Northern Soul is mentioned and all-night.
  4. George did two great sets at Lifeline. Admittedly he isn't to everyone's taste but then which DJ is? George doesn't play just funk either, or funky soul, some great soul records in his sets as well.
  5. Sounds a good show and look forward to seeing him at Radcliffe.
  6. The all-nighters the rooms were open to all but only had problems once when fire alarm went off. The main problem was the manageress.
  7. Possibly is Robb. This came on a cd with some other Motown unissued stuff years ago and has been sat on the PC for years as well.
  8. Lifeline had all the rooms for the weekender, no "normal" people as you say. As for the Scottish weekender, I couldn't make the whole weekend, I wanted to go for the Saturday night but I wasn't prepared to pay the full weekend fee for one night (£80 a ticket I think), ridiculous and no wonder no one went really. I shan't be going this year as I will see Darrow Fletcher at one of the other two venues he is appearing at in the country.
  9. Andy Dyson played it out at several venues over here for a while, including those who where those who supposedly can dance and appreciate soul and it didn't work, no one hardly danced Shame as it is a great record.
  10. It is very difficult over here to get them dancing to unknowns the first time. They have to be comfortable dancing.
  11. I've never seen it fill the floor in this country, no matter what time it is played. It is this country we are essentially discussing though, we aren't in Berlin or anywhere else...unfortunately. Oversees they have a different mentality, they dance even when they have never heard a record before, they don't care. Neither do they have the baggage we have, that was Wigan, Stafford, Torch, oldie, newie and so on. For the majority here a record has to be from a certain place and time the majority of the time, what they grew up with essentially. Many oversees are young and just growing up with the music really.
  12. The Story of Northern Soul by David Nowell. Road Through Motown - Ralph Terrana Hype & Soul: Behind The Scenes at Motown - Al Abrams Only Human - Tommy Hunt I'm just reading A House on Fire: The Rise and Fall Of Philadelphia Soul, great reading.
  13. Reading your post and the ones prior it read like a dig, apologies if I misread.
  14. It is worse than average. I asked him to post what it was. It'll be taken down off my sound cloud soon as I need some space.
  15. Sunday night at Cleethorpes is party night, nothing serious, everyone having a laugh and a p*ss up. Dunno why you have to come out with digs at other events like this.
  16. without looking local and national release
  17. Depends what time it is. Certain times when everyone off their tits you can play anything and they will dance, especially oversees. Play it over here at an all-nighter and I bet it clears the floor at 4am in the morning. Don't get me wrong Adam, I think the record is fantastic, just I guess we have different ideas of what a dance record is.
  18. If Lifeline was to get a weekender again it would be back to how it was at the Bell. We'd love to do the same at the Stables but just not possible when you have a venue as big and most of the nighter crowd these days want 60's dancers.

Dunno if this has been posted? Guy Hennigan's Ernie Andrews Neither Will I cover up from Stafford....
  20. There is and it has been done, Lifeline did it. It had the finest DJ's in UK at the time and many from Europe as well. As I said we are still looking for a suitable venue and if we can find one then Lifeline Weekenders will return.
  21. From Steve Propes and Galen Gart's "LA R&B Vopcal Groups"
  22. Frank Wilson version of Tell me..... https://soundcloud.com/chalkster/frank-wilson-tell-me-baby
  23. I don't need to ask anyone, it ain't a dancer IMO, I'm big enough and been around long enough to form an opinion myself without the need to go and ask someone else. There's plenty of records that ooze soul, loads deep stuff, just cause it has soul doesn't make it a dancer. I agree it ain't funk, just soul.
  24. Cosmos Universal Band. It has been around a few years now. Sure it has been reissued by Jazzman?
  25. I'm not sweating Kris, it wasn't me who wanted to know, certainly not after a copy.
