Plus there are now others that do it and in some cases better quality, especially on acetate. You could buy one of the cutting machines from Vestax when they first came out, they were around £7k. Discs were something like a few pence each.

I realise that Kev I know why it is used but like Russ I simply find the term inflammatory and used by those on the defensive and losing the debate, incapable of putting over proper reasoned comments and have to rely on derogatory comments instead. Like I said I've never seen anyone bragging to someone else they have an original or shouted over the mic "c'mon look at this original, cost me a fortune", just to massage their supposedly inflated ego.

As I said in another topic the arguments you see on Soul Source have always been talked about. You simply didn't have everyone sat at a keyboard 24/7. The only medium you had to vent your anger, feelings and opinions were the magazines of the day, B&S, Black Echoes and the fanzines that kicked about. If they were fortnightly or monthly then the argument would probably have been irrelevant by the time your letter printed. Oldies vs. newies, boots vs. pressings, clashing, all the politics you see today, they've always been there.

I don't know why this is being split once again into the rare soul night /nighter DJ and the oldies only local DJ. DJ's across the scene play boots. Admittedly there is more focus on your all-nighter DJ so the playing of boots isn't as prevalent as some local soul nights but it has and does happen. I also know many DJ's who only venture locally but have the utmost integrity and stick strictly to the OVO only policy.

LaBeat was the local release, Palmer the later national release. Either way they are still both originals (same for the other examples you gave), nothing technically about it.

How can Al Williams be considered a re-issue? It came before Palmer.

I suppose it is possible it is the Supremes. Soul Harmony Singles whilst incorrect all too often has them down on backing on several releases prior to this one. It has this listed after the Lupine release and immediately before their first 1961 Tamla release.

I think 99% know what they are listening to and who plays what. Why this argument keeps arising I don't know because it is practically irrelevant in the real world. As said most don't care when at a soul night and by and large nighter DJ's stick to the rule, most promoters know what they are getting with most DJ's. Some venues do play boots though and are quite happy to do so without advertising the fact.

I can see your logic with the instrumental but it is still a bootleg as it was an unauthorised release, done without the necessary licensing or any monies going to the owner of the track. Why play an instrumental though when there's a better vocal, it's inferior. Maybe CD players should be installed in this day and age, save the cost of a carver.
