  1. It appears there aren't any. Well not if you are looking for a general concensus that a record can even be classed as Northern. Perhaps the real answer is the number of unique tracks listed in Tim's and woodchip's US price guides plus woodchips soon to be released British price guide ohh and you better add in all the records played at Prestatyn, the Wilton, Lifeline etc that aren't in the guides. Ohh and nearly forgot everything I play that I class as Northern

Well Steve I see the photo of the 'No Boots' sign turned out well. Shame not all of the DJ's had that policy I caught the Linda Jones on heartbeat but just thought that would be it then the Teen Turbans really threw me class track hand't heard in ages. BTW How did the other pic's turn out? P.S. if you read this tonight (mon) I've got another nine boxes of stuff from the U.S. and need some help looking through 'em. Just give me a ring.

I won't bother posting on this thread as Donkey read my mind
  4. I Remember Neil Jones buying a 45 (my heart Needs A Break I think ) and it had a number written on it in biro. The number turned out to be his extention number at work
  5. Thanks for the info Guys reliable as always, Cheers Ged
  6. My bank manager:fool: hopes I don't come back with Sam Dees Lonely For You Baby, Rose Batiste 'I Can't Leave You', Dean Courtney LYJCWA or Cynthia and the Imaginary Three 'Thats what I am (Without You)' otherwise there no point taking them.
  7. Can any one shed any light on the 'Hense Forth Music Co' Release of this (L.A. 1010)? I know the 'Highland' one is about £100 or so but I didn't know it was out on Hense Forth all help appreciated. Ged
  8. Can't remeber what I danced to last let alone the first thing I danced to First soul record I bought tho was 'Shotgun' Jnr Walker my older sister had loads of early Motown in the 60's but not shotgun so had to buy it meself.
  9. Never really got into anything else on a buying front, never sold my collection but in the late 80's when I was running pubs I didn't get out and about much really. When I first go into the scene tho I did have everything that Bowie had recorded up until that point '75 ish. So I was destined to be a collector even then. I sold my Bowie singles collection in about '82 and got £50 for the lot. I was ripped off really and it put me off selling for a long time. Once the 'northern' bug bit me it never went away even if it was just tapes in the car when I couldn't get to venues.

I've played it out on more than on occasion even had some of the modernistas up dancing to it. I like it better than the maze version. Not sure that just 'cos something charted that it can't be played specially to the modern crowd. Ace Spectrum DSNE got to #5 in the charts stateside.
  11. Billy, Sadly not though I know where there is one? The guy sent me the sound file to prove it but won't he sell. I've had some good stuff from him in the past tho, for the moment tho his name escapes me for some reason Cheers Ged
  12. Well this topic just wont lie down though if I had put politics in the title I'm sure there would have been more comments. You can stop ringing me now I know this scheme is a non starter, in fact I knew that when I posted the topic as you will see from the original post and the records mentioned it was generated some time ago with tongue firmly in cheek. We kinda have these drunken debates (though I'm always sober being the driver ) and they have led to the ideas such as 'Northern Big Soul Brother' where we debated who would be the best people on the scene to put into a room together and what tasks would we set them. Some of you will have seen the 'Fantasy Northern DJ league' that we published in 'In the Neighbourhood' fanzine that led to comments on RS's radio show about the £8.00 value of Ginger Taylor, complaints from some DJ's who we missed out of the league and most suprisingly of all a number of completed entries . How these people thought we would know if any of the DJs played something at a venue that had already been played that night so we could dock them some points was beyond me or even how we would count the number of people on the dance floor for every DJ's set at every venue to allocate them a score. The original post was intended to lighten the mood that was darkening with one thread having stooped to name calling and personal abuse around this very subject. When I did it I did expect some (good natured) stick or banter (ala Pete's initial posts), I did expect some people to wonder if I was serious. I didn't expect everyone to think I was setting up a Northern Soul equivalent of the 'Moonies' and people to start ringing me to remonstrate. I guess I need to be even more 'off the wall' (is that possible I wonder ) if I don't want you to take me too seriously. My thoughts on 'Northern Big Soul Brother' I'll keep to myself
  13. Sound file as requested:
  14. All the best jokes do Just kiddin mate
  15. I think I need glasses I thought I saw Pete trying to be bringer of harmony and understanding
  16. £41 - well there's nowt as daft as a vinyl addict on a mission Interesting thought though pikeys I have an almost full set of demos (missing Black Nasty don't know why Sandy didn't save me one of those) I know Nabay was fetching around £100 a couple of years back. What about Lester Tipton and Al Williams maybe woodchips new UK price guide will give us an idea either that or it'll be based on what he has in stock
  17. Is there an echo in here

Point taken Winnie Like I said to Karen I think I know who Kate means anyway. I just don't want to be thought of, by anyone, as a promoter who is out for a fast buck. When promoting a venue is costing you hard earned money that you could be spending on vinyl people assuming you are coining it in gets a little wearing. I'm an over sensitive soul at times

Some promoters do it for money and at least one has told me so himself. It's how they make a living. Nothing wrong with that the venue will stand or fall on it's merits. Speaking for myself as well as promoting a 'big' event I also DJ at a regular charity night for another organiser. There is no doubt which is the best attended, no doubt which spends the most on promotional materials, no doubt which pays out the most in DJ fees, sound equipment, security, room hire, advertising etc. It may be a suprise to hear that I can make more as a DJ at one than being the promoter of the other. We don't all do it for the money even at the 'big' events what I've made over the years as a promoter or a DJ wouldn't buy 5% of my record collection. I really wish you well with your charity night but please don't tar all promoters with the same 'only in it for the money' brush.

There's a good funky instro version of 'Comin' Home Baby' on a mobile phone ad at the mo that is quite good. And a recent land rover add featured a rock version of 'Have Love Will Travel' not realy my cup of tea tho. I remember Neil Jones suggesting in an article some 'suitable tracks for some products. If I can find it I'll post it up but one that sticks in my mind was 'Baby Don't You Weep' as a tune for 'Tena Landy'
  23. Like Chalky my answer is a righteous brothers outing, well Bobby Hatfield anyway. His 'Hang Ups' on Verve is class. I also suspect if you asked this question next week you'd get a different answer, from me anyway.
  24. Come to think of it Winnie you may be on to something here. It just might work Can I have a get out of jail free card on the dancing in time please
