Christmas Northern Soul
Flipside of The Flirtations "Nothing But A Heartache" is a great track called "Christmas Time Is Here Again". And it isn't really Christmas without "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" by Darlene Love, is it?

Sam Cooke
Well, that's just made me look even MORE moronic... I'll go and try and find it!
-
Sam Cooke
At the risk of sounding utterly moronic, I'm surprised by how often I get asked for Sam Cooke whilst DJing - not at northern soul nights, just general funky mod soul type affairs. So, just wanted to ask - what Sam Cooke stuff has been played at northern do's over the years. And what should? What's worth investigating on SAR Records?

Ebay Asking For Your View On Recent Changes
Just filled in the survey - but can't imagine it'll make ANY difference. But made me feel slightly better. I'm sure the only reason Ebay have surveys is to see if they're missing a trick and can make even MORE money somehow. Like asking what sites you planned to use instead... why bother telling them, so they can try and kill them off too?!

Jackie Edwards Oh Mary
Eh, it was originally written and recorded by Neil Diamond! Good cover version, nonetheless...

Favourite Version
It's got to be the Evie Sands ORIGINAL every time, hands down, and couldn't believe Madeline Bell looked like the favourite. Evie Sands has so much more urgency, passion and dynamics - from the pleading chorus to the false fade out. I listened to all the clips to make sure my ears weren't deceiving me to find... ...that the Evie Sands clip is some crappy Ian Levine style 90s re-recording - utterly dismal. Listening again, I'm 99% certain it IS Ian Levine on production "duties". Every time I hear that rubbish Motown sampled drum fill he insists on using on EVERY track EVERY eight bars I feel like punching a hole in my computer screen. Ugh! Here's the REAL Evie Sands version: Time to re-cast those votes I think. Pretty much every song Evie cut, someone went on to have greater success with a cover. "Take Me For A Little While" (recorded when she was 14), "I Can't Let Go", "Angel Of The Morning" - all superb.

Euro Mvps
What about Gloria Scott "That's What You Say" on French 45? Not a lot of people seem to know about it, amazing track... Err, I guess that rules it out of the rock solid Euro rarities, then...
