Sad to share the report of William Daron Pulliam, aka Darondo's passing. A true Bay Area Soul legend and one of the most unique voices in rare soul. http://www.spin.com/articles/darondo-cult-adored-san-francisco-soul-man-dead-at-67/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQXY4aFBJf0 added by site via wikipedia William Daron Pulliam, who performed in the 1970s under the name Darondo, was a funk and soul singer from the San Francisco Bay Area. Although he is not widely recognized today, serious enthusiasts of the soul genre consistently rate him in high regard. The mythology surrounding Darondo describes him as a pimp, although he has denied this claim. His performing name is said to have originated as a compliment from a waitress who was fond of his generous tipping habits. Darondo still lives in San Francisco and has received more attention in recent years thanks to London DJ Gilles Peterson playing his 1973 single, "Didn't I" on his BBC Radio 1 program. In 2007, Darondo's song "Didn't I" was covered by Jack Peñate on his Spit At Stars EP and in 2008, featured on an episode (season 1, episode 4) of Breaking Bad. "Didn't I" was also featured in the 2010 film Saint John of Las Vegas in a scene featuring Steve Buscemi. In 2009, the song "Legs" was featured in an episode (season 1, episode 8) of the American version of Life on Mars. In 2010, "Didn't I" was featured in the films Night Catches Us and Jack Goes Boating. It also appeared in the New Element video, Future Nature. Recordings of Darondo are available from Luv N Haight, an imprint label of Ubiquity Records. Other works can be purchased from Omnivore Recordings. 4. Brooklyn Flea Market is fun to romp around, never found any particularly good record digging to do but definitely lots of nicely curated vintage-y things for sale, though prices can be steep. If you'd like to have a nice "old new york" kind of feeling, there's an amazing off-the-grid bar in Long Island City (a bit of a trek to get to, but worth it) called Dutch Kills that serves the finest classic cocktails in an amazing well-preserved bar from the early 1900's. Every time I've been has been wonderful, and great tunes pumping through the speakers (lots of deep soul and R&B). They do all the ice for the drinks the old-fashioned way, hand cut! Its a treat to see their bartenders at work. Its a short walk from the Court Square subway stop. https://dutchkillsbar.com/main/ Some great record shops in the Village, Strider and Tropicalia In Furs if you dig latin...
  5. Nice one mate! Good you'll be able to check out something while you're there.
  6. Pete's pretty spot on there with the price. There are two mixes of that track, one with an organ really upfront in the mix, and one with piano. Going off my copy, I'd say the ones with the orange/black only labels are the organ mix, and the ones that have white mixed with the black lines in the logo are the piano mix. I could be wrong though. KILLER track, though I think I like the beat ballad-ish deep flip "count to ten" even more.
  7. Tickets booked now, 17th - 30th of July! Does anyone have some suggestions of cheap places to stay? My girlfriend will be in a typography course for a week of our stay in southwark so closer to there is preferable, but again, cheaper the better since we're both on a budget. We've checked air bnb and a lot seem to be preeetty expensive, even by London standards.
  8. Too bad my man! Maybe contact Sergio through the club's page and see if he's playing anywhere else, or has some other suggestions? Sounds like a very interesting line of work you've got there. No worries on the info give, happy to help out a fellow soulie
  9. So true Dave! I'm really happy to contribute, for some reason I had a feeling my friend there in Colombia would know of something, and sure enough came through! I had no idea Sergio was living there now, either.
  10. Let me/us know how it goes, mate! Enjoy
  11. I can't be stopped lately, I guess? I'm sure everyone knows the feeling, but I've really been on a streak in the last month or so. Expecting this week-ish: Jimmy Norman - I don't love you no more Reggie Garner - Hotline Ralph Young - cool off the floor Bobby Lee Fears - exodus
  12. Here's the link for Bogota Soul Club, run by Sergio Iglesias, who turned out some amazing parties in my former home of San Francisco. Probably a good starting point, though I know he's more of an early soul/R&B kind of DJ. https://www.facebook.com/bogotatienesoul?fref=ts
  13. Just asked a friend living there for ya, will let you know if he has any good suggestions.
  14. Thanks so much again for all your suggestions! Looks like I've seriously gotta get some savings in line here before I take off with so many record stores to visit...

Yes, from what I've read an official reissue is in the works, in cooperation with the artists. None of the proceeds of this boot are going to the people who made it, however limited it is or wherever its origins are. Don't buy it, wait out for the official reissue.
  17. very nice price on the voice masters! great record too.
  18. Would that be the guy who sells the shoddy boots of Towanda Barnes on Jo-Mar? I got one of those from him and found it to be unlistenable, so I flipped it for what I paid for it.
  19. I thought everyone has been for some time? Great record, that one. Wasn't the story that he was selling them out of the boot of his car after his gigs?
  20. apologies, phone double posted this sales list!

  24. I really enjoy the gospel comp "Oh Graveyard You Can't Hold Me Always" on Mississippi Records, fabulous collection that one is. Especially the first track "Eternal Life" by the Mosby Family Singers, so haunting. Would definitely recommend that one, never seen a 45 or LP with that track on it, though I'm sure it must exist. its included at the 43:15 mark on this gospel mix: https://soundcloud.com/thesecretshowcasepresents/o-h-l-o-r-d
  25. Also, any pubs that are northern friendly or have small do's going regularly?
