Psychedelic Soul?
I'd say this great one from the Parliaments definitely has a psychedelic lean to it, and its a fantastic double sider with the pumping northern of "Don't Be Sore At Me" on the flip. And of course we have to mention Dee Edwards - Why Can't There Be Love, for that amazing Dennis Coffey fuzz guitar

Memphis & New Orleans Record Shops
Heard many a good thing about Domino Records, supposedly ran by one of the guys who off-shot from Mississippi Records in Portland, OR. Mississippi is probably my favorite all-around record store on the planet, so if Domino is sewn from the same seed I can only imagine there's some gold to be found there. I'm trying to make it out to NOLA in the spring myself so don't take all the goodies

San Francisco And The Bay Area - Soul Tips?
Make sure first and foremost to stop into Groove Merchant and Rookie's Records. Both are fantastic shops with heaps and heaps of great soul, if you're into doing a little digging. Cool Chris at Groove Merchant is extremely helpful and has amazing knowledge of his wares, but most 45s are unsorted and behind the counter so don't be dissuaded by what's on the floor. Dick at Rookie's is a bit crotchety at first but after a couple visits he'll warm up a bit. He's most specialized in obscure girl group sounds, so get him going on that subject! If Lucky happens to be working at Rookie's when you're there, tell him hi from me! There are a few good soul nights that happen in town, Night Beat being the most northern-dedicated. I believe it happens once a month but perhaps more? Some of the same folks also do a great deep soul night called "Lost & Found: Slow Jams" at a bar called the Makeout Room, I believe that night is weekly. Also if you enjoy boogie and more 80's modern soul sounds, theres a great weekly night at my favorite bar in the city, The Knockout, called Sweater Funk. Every sunday evening and its always a blast. I'll try to rack my brain for more from my former home, but at the moment that should be a good start. I try to avoid Amoeba records because its kind of just too big and overwhelming, plus no decks to preview before you buy, but occasionally good things can be had for dirt cheap because of the sheer amount of their inventory.

Vanity Recordings! Are They All Rubbish - Any Examples?
I believe Carrie Cleveland's records could be considered vanity records that are played on the "scene". As I understand it they were home recorded with her husband in their home studio in Oakland, which probably explains their charmingly amateur arrangements. The "Make Love To Me/I Need Love" 45 on Audio Ent was financed by Carrie. 50 promo copies that are the ones with the better mix without the cheesy organ in the forefront, then 100 copies of the organ mix or something close to that.

Also well-deserving of mention is San Francisco/LA's Nick Waterhouse, who's doing the "New Breed" R&B thing so flawlessly, in my opinion. Still kicking myself for selling this record...

The Records That Nobody Likes
Glad someone said it before I did. If someone can take a stab at Epitome Of Sound, then certainly this corny piece of garbage masked as a "northern classic" can do some time on the chopping block too. when I first got into really seriously collecting northern records, I remember picking up a copy in a shop to listen to because it had "all-time northern classic" or something to that extent penned on the sleeve, and thought "well I've gotta listen to this one". I almost pulled out of this game entirely after hearing that one (glad of course I didn't). Luckily I've never heard anyone play it out on a night, but then again I've never been to a proper do in the UK, so I'm sure my chance will come some day.

So Was 2012 A Good Year For You Soulwise? Nuffin Negative
Its been a great soulful year for me over here in Denmark. Firstly moving down here after two long hard years of trying to make things work in Malmö Sweden (just across the water from here). Malmö does have the best soul record shop in the region (Hej Sebastian!) and some fine DJs, but Copenhagen had so much more to offer me and I'm all the happier for making the move. After a half-year playing on a pretty bad night finally severed ties with our bad 3rd DJ partner and created our monthly mod club, Tower City Garage & Soul Club, at one of the most popular nightclubs in Copenhagen. I've also started up another dedicated northern night called Delegates Of Soul that brings together DJs from some of the great clubs here in town (GhettoSoul, Backstreet). Both have seen great attendance and positive response. Had a short trip back home to the states for my sister's wedding in California which was the most beautiful event, and got to DJ two solid hours of rare soul as well as walk my sister down the aisle to her wonderful husband. Also did a little record digging in San Francisco and dug up a few great tunes, including the last stock copy of Carrie Cleveland - I Need Love on Audio Ent from Groove Merchant (thanks to Cool Chris and Dick at Rookie's records, both top notch shops!) picked up some great new-to-me tunes as well as some top wants, mostly through this forum (hats off to you guys and gals!) and discovered plenty more to add to the ever-growing want list. Its been great discovering this forum and the wealth of knowledge all of you have, I've cut back tremendously on ebay and bought way fewer mis-graded records. All in all a great year, looking forward to even more goodness in 2013!

Are Youngsters Coming Through?
I'm a youngster by standards of the average northern soulie, and I'm very active in the small scene we have going here in Copenhagen. Our nights are well-attended by a mostly younger crowd, not too many of which are dedicated soul music fans but people love the music and appreciate the sounds of rare soul. I'm pleased to be a young person actively involved in this world and am extremely passionate about it, and its nice to see that people are starting to take a bit more notice. I would love to get myself over to some proper nighters in the UK though!
