  3. Great poll, sorry in advance for the ramble there is a point at the end, really got me thinking, having started my soul journey around 68 seeing the poll my gut instinct was the 60’s probably down to being young and the memory of discovering all the fabulous tunes for the first time, the excitement and sheer joy of finding new tunes and swapping discoveries with mates not realising that feeling would never really fade, the excitement of hearing something that blows my mind lasts to this day. It seemed back then nothing could be better, there was a wealth of back catalogue to swim through, tunes recommended by older mates who were starting to go to clubs, listening to the Mike Raven show etc. I still get a curious tingle when Clarence Carter does that laugh on Looking for a Fox .Recently after selling and giving away some of my collection I thought I’d better initiate a keepers box which turned out to be quite an eye opener, I have long since got rid of anything of value so that wasn’t a consideration and would not have been anyway so my choices came down to what memories the record invoked, several went in the box purely because holding the record made me smile, end result a pretty even mix of 60’s and later stuff including stuff that made the charts, New York City etc which depending on your point of view may or may not be soulful but that's another question. So to the poll, well I find myself undecided, sure I think there was a lot of pretty middle of the road stuff in the 70’s as the production became more sophisticated, less earthy as Liam says but there’s still a shit load of soulful stuff there. If I did it semi scientifically and listed my favourite artists there would definitely be more 60’s there than any other period but would that make it more soulful, not sure, my heart wants to hit the 60’s button but my head is saying Whoa there, what about Al Green, Millie Jacksons Caught Up saga, Aretha etc. Where’s the both equally button!
  4. Was that the thread suggested and started by Len where he asked for recommendations as to who people would like to hear about, think it covered three people one if my memory serves me right was Nev Wheerey another I think was Ted Massey, it died a death for some reason , some great stories came out, maybe Len will read this thread consider re starting it.
  5. Sorry for your loss, it's a hard time but I'm sure your memories will keep you warm, I was just thinking about my own mum before I logged on as I cleaned the cooker, she loved a clean white cooker top so every time I clean mine I think how she must be smiling down saying "good lad"
  6. I might be being a bit thick here but checking this out on the old You Tube saw the Frederick Hymes faster version which I knew and noticed on the record it is credited as being written by Frederick but on the Tonny Hymes it is credited as written by Tonny, being they have the same surname and sound kinda the same though I'm not 100%sure on that could they be the same person?
  7. Welcome Tony, what a fabulous time lies ahead of you hearing the wealth of tunes available for the first time, plenty of knowledge and help available on here too. Enjoy the sometimes bumpy but wonderful ride that is Northern Soul.
  8. Just looked the track up on the old You Tube, yeah great tune, followed the link to her work helping children find their voice, very inspirational woman
  9. This made me smile and brought back memories of my dear departed Mum and Dad who used the term, not heard it used for a long time, thanks for the memory Russ
  10. I for one would be interested to see your playlist, hope you find the encouragement here to post a few
  11. I had a quick look to see if it will be repeated over the next week, couldn't see it, seeing the comments above I'd probably give it a miss now anyway, next week I think it was on Thursday around ten they have Soul Sisters Soul Brothers, mentioned George Benson ,Aretha etc so probably just stuff that made the charts in the 80's but I could be wrong. Can't remember the night but a Blues one was also listed.
  12. Was this any good, is it worth looking out for a repeat?
  13. I like em', I do a monthly cd comp that I give out to friends more or less works out at 30%from tunes I see on Playlists, 30% I hear on Podcasts, 30% I find trawling You Tube the final 10% is made up of stuff I hear out and a few well known ones. I like to see what is being played in other parts of the country as I stay pretty local, I don't do all nighter's even though one of the best is on my doorstep (sorry Len) so it's nice to see and hear what is being played there too . I've had loads of great tunes brought to my attention many of which have become firm favourites through reading playlists many of which would probably have passed me by. Plus with lists like the one from the Horse and Groom not being 100% Northern you get to hear stuff you would probably overlook on the likes of You Tube searching for more dance related tunes. Then again you could say I should get out more cos' there's most definitely nothing better than hearing the sounds in a venue over a good well set up sound system.

  15. Yes, I hit post before I had finished then thought twice about posting, I thought I had deleted post when I edited but obviously not, must be more careful in future, good thread though, some interesting views in the end just didn't think mine were valid or of interest.
  16. I think it depends on why you own certain records and what those records are, we all know the pleasure to be found in just looking at a particular label, holding the record in your hands, the emotional bond that you have for certain records whether it be a memory of time, place or even person. Then you have to consider the act of actually collecting records and the lengths some will go to for instance to get a full run of a label, the various different issues, pressing plants etc. I'm as far away an expert on record prices and what holds it's value and what doesn't as I am from Mars but taking into account the age range of people on the scene and current prices for apparently not so rare records if I was in possession of

  22. Not being argumentative here as this is something that has puzzled me for some time, I could be being a bit thick, slow or whatever but does this happen. Looking at it from a paying customers point of view I would rightly or wrongly assume a promoter books a Dj because he likes what they play having heard them somewhere else or by reputation, also because knowing his regular punters will like what said dj plays. Why then would he have to dictate what the dj plays, doesn't make sense to me or as I say am I missing something.
  23. It's all about the question, the obvious answer like it or not as soon as they put a record on the deck they are D'jing , if you had asked when does a Dj become a good or respected Dj that's a harder question to answer. I've been asked a few times would I fancy doing a spot always refusing because although at one time I had some pretty decent tunes (nothing remotely rare or in demand) and could easily have put a set together much the same as anyone with a fair few records could it would have been no different to what's already being played by the majority of dj's out there so what would be the point apart from possibly ego. I've seen a good friend grow from if you have to use the term "wanna be" in a Northern sense to in my opinion a great dj. His journey was one of disappointment, hope, despair, empty dance floors, playing what was expected to finally taking his own path , searching out tunes in some cases yes paying a lot of money, not because rarity meant quality but to get the tunes he himself liked and wanted to play and hoped others would respond to. Even the dj's at the top of the tree so to speak sometimes have to play to the dancefloor, something I witnessed myself not long ago, speaking to said dj after the gig he said with an obvious tone of defeat "nobody wants to play to an empty floor". For me a good dj becomes a great dj when they can mix the rare with the popular, the cheap with the expensive, I'm sure we've all at one time or another thought as a dj leaves the decks that was a cracking set, I'm always one for going up to the dj in those circumstances and letting them know how much I enjoyed the set, going by the reaction more often than not it would seem few give feedback face to face. I'm a prodigious downloader and cd compiler and find myself constantly amazed by the amount of stuff out there, the great tunes that I never hear played out, as people have said on this thread there's a vast amount of tunes out there, I have no idea of price or rarity of 99'9% of them so to any "wanna be's "out there I'd repeat as stated by others do the ground work , be brave, be different, if it don't work let it go .
  24. Sam Dees After All.......the line "we cant even be strangers again" sums up a whole lot of emotions,
