  2. JMM has the edge definitely here the other two or nice JMM s is excellent ML
  3. I'm a big fan of the Artistics but on this particular record Johnny Howard as the edge ML
  4. It was Whitney who got her husband on the hard stuff not the other way round , She chose that life, not anybody else, there are Slimeballs now in her family and her so called friends who will tell stories true and untrue just to get easy money for their next fix , My question is this if they knew then which they say they did why wait till she,s dead to open their mouths, Her chaos should have died with her not to blame other people who can't defend theirselves , Whitney was no Angel get real, ML
  5. Calm down fellas its much to hot to be stressed out by a poll on good touch of soul pop sounds grab a Solero sit down and remember all the good times LoL, ML
  6. I'm not knocking these two recordings by Dusty and Susan they are easy listening pop tunes with a touch of soul which as Spain Pete said is relevant to the listener how much soul they get out of it, obviously people have fond memories of a time when they heard it for the first time or a time when they were in love dancing to it ect, as regards genres NS is a massive Umbrella consisting oh many genres ie, RnB, TAMLA , POPCORN ROCK NROLL all mean to say there are more soulful tunes to decide on a Poll that hit you right between eyes ML
  7. It makes sense to me, is this a Soul forum or am I missing something? ML
  8. Both versions lack my interprataion of NS or Soul just catchy pop records with a little twist with the production and backing singers, Nothing against Dusty but Helen Shapiro had the better voice for me with this Genre, Better still was Julie Grant from Blackpool around at the same time she did versions of Drifters and Baby Washington material and did a good job a real powerful soul voice but never got the acclaim they got, in fact she beat Helen into second place in a singing talent contest circa Butlins 1960 ML
  9. The problem with this thread is there is no solution , When a scene is fragmented and watered down like the NS scene has become it becomes a magnet for wannabes and johnny come lately,s it opens door for them that were closed to them before because in the day they would have just not been good enough, like other music scenes particular Dance which became watered down a lot quicker and ruined than NS , You can waste a hell of a lot of negative energy on things you can't change especially worrying about people on the fringes of NS cocking things up with no knowledge bootlegs, ect better to concentrate on what's left of the Good scene the Good people and what's left of the good venues ML
  10. GG,,s Tower of Strength got him in a lot of trouble he couldn't keep it under control ML
  11. Good information on a great artist, always liked Gene,s Tower much better than Frankie,s he had a lovely voice, always remember seeing him in the film he made over here in 1962 was it called "" it's Trad Dad ". .? Good stuff Roburt ML
  12. The gear was faster then the music had to keep up with it LoL no seriously the version I have is slightly slower than that and it ve had that over 30 years ML
  13. I still play the instrumental version out and it always gets a good response it's a fantastic piece of music stands up with the vocal versions ML
  14. I asked Edwin to sing it live at Maxims circa 1988 he did at 4am in the morning and brought the house down a fantastic live artist and a genuine nice guy whose music will stand the test of time for ever and a day ML
  15. Being cowardly again here sitting on the fence again both magic sounds what work in a slightly different way, Edwin,s vocals plead with you , Donni,s vocals in a sublime way work and get to you too I'm giving these two 50% each both fantastic sounds ML 📲
  16. I forgot to mention even then we all thought we were part of a fantastic unique scene which was better being kept secret and underground ML
  17. The Room at the Top in Wigan started all night soul nights in 1965 till 68 sometimes twice a week every week till 8am then you could have coffee downstairs still listening to soul music till around 10am then it was wigan baths for some and trains buses and cars home for the rest I know I was there Mick L
  18. That's a cracking write up Roburt great article, I can relate to all that music in the American soul and RNB charts at the time, it was my growing up music, We were lucky enough to hear a great deal of it on the fairgrounds in the north west which I worked on where we would buy the imports from the back street record shops in Manchester, especially for the waltzer S and Speedways at the time the machines and music at the time seemed to be joined at the hip , fantastic times and memories, ML
  19. Gene Pitney Heartbreaker was a good stomper just to let you know we were dancing to that tune in 1968 so believe me it was already discovered and I wouldn't be ashamed in the least to play it, I still do and it still gets a great response ML
  20. Sitting on the fence with these two, got them both and love them both ML

  22. It weren't a youth club but it was a club full of youth full SOULIES The inn Crowd . Dobie Grey Needle in a Haystack Velvelettes 123 Len Barry Mr Pityful. Otis Reading Dont fight it. Wilson Pickett Jenny take a Ride. Mitch Ryder and Ds Can't help my self. Four Tops ML
  23. Yes to both Marks always noticed that in different venues chemicals and company does help with the quality of sound but some venues have and seem to bring the best out of the music being played your definitely not wrong, it's just to a lot of people who have not got the ears to know the difference it sounds the same it doesn't BELEIVE me LoL, ML
  24. Ernest version has the edge, the finish and polish
  25. We were lucky we had Geno Washington and his ram jam band virtually resident at our weekly niter in Wigan along with one or two good RNB local bands at the time this was a very dark atmospheric club with sweat dripping down the walls with 250 people in a space for at the most 100 top of a building no fire escape no Health and Safety them days 1965 to 68 The Room at The Top PS didn't matter how good your clothes were 30 minutes in that room you and your clothes looked like you'd just come out of wet wringer so you all looked the same LoL, Great memories ML
