Gregory Porter - The In Crowd
Oh yea ..his compression hat ... its to allow him to hear himself sing ... like when some singers put one finger in their ear to block out the music and listen to their own tone .... well that's what it started off at .. now its just synonymous of him , so its his style ... and have to say .. " The in Crowd " keeps me on the out of the crowd too :)no giving it 5 from me ... ( there's an age thing only some will remember )

Gregory Porter - The In Crowd
Gregory's first album "Water" is great and "1960 What" is a massive TUNE .... with great lyrics that really taker a hard look at what was happening at that time ... Ill give you that's he's no Gil Scot H ....when it comes to penning real reflective meaning lyrics , but for a guy that has been singing for a while and only really got his break on Jools Hollands show some years back ... Hey .. he's not Lou Rawls or Bill Withers I'll grant you ... but there are so few black people that want to sing good old fashioned SOUL nowadays ... Sharon Jones ... Faith Evans ... Angie Stone ... Anthony Hamilton .. and a very good fellow Scouser ... Esco Willaims

Gregory Porter - The In Crowd
No offence Winnie ... and i'm a newbie on here so have to watch my P's & Q's ... but I do have a real love of music ..old and new . I'm a 58 yr old Scouser now living in London ..that went to Mecca and Wigan from its start as my best mates brother was and is an old Wheel man ( "Mad Sam" Steve Butler ) and we used to go in the loft and get his records down when he went out and play them as he wouldn't let us near them at any other time I work at most of the big music festivals each year and still collect all kinds of vinyl still ... and get to the odd weekender and 100 club do , although dont know anyone close thats into Northern down in London Music plays a huge part in my life .. and it gives so much more than pleasure to the ear ... so forgive my indulgence of bigging Mr Porter up a little ..he is a real talent and thanks to all the members that have helped me so far with various things on this site ... some really true gents SteveG

Gregory Porter - The In Crowd
Music does not stand still ... we can all hark back to better versions and versions we like more than others .. what is refreshing is that here is someone that is singing with true soul ... no break for a rap ... no break beat ... no waiting for the drop of the inset of dub step that most put out now .. just well written songs ( most written by him ) and sung really well with great orchestration and arrangement . He is great live ..and is on a nationwide tour .. go see him if you get the chance .. Winnie .... you my not like his version of " the in crowd " and i will say ..i don't really like the internation and jazz gaps he used on it ... but its not dire ...think you may already be wearing an old skool compression hat yourself )

Gregory Porter - The In Crowd
He says he can hear himself sing better ... and its his style ... he's made 3 albums ... check out the track "On my way to Harlem " tune "" At least your headgear is easily distinguishable. What’s the story there? It’s my jazz hat (laughs). It’s been my thing, it’s been how I’ve been pictured, and how I’ve been out in public for some time now, so this is me. In the tradition of the music, there have been some great hats, and I’m throwing my hat in the ring, no pun intended.

Original Genuine Vintage Wigan Casino Patch Northern Soul
Is it me ..or are eBay prices for original patches going through the roof .. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271583345041?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I know its a nice patch ...and original ... but £132 with nearly 2 days to go still ..and all bids from what look to be long standing eBay users with good feedback ..could break £200 going like this . It only takes two people to really want the same item to force a bidding war ., I know .. so maybe that;s what it is ..but I have noticed the price of other patches going up bit by bit .. What price nostalgia hey .. I have about 4 of these patches and my original tickets for the last all-nighter , all bought back in the day ... could be a nice holiday at some point

Ian Levine
Very sad news ..The Highland Room was a great venue with a great dance floor for floaters like myself ... Went to the opening night of The Rocket as well...... as now I'm a southern softie....... and he was on top form .. I've got my piece of Highland Room floor under my bed ... get well mate cause I want it signed now The rights and wrongs of what his vision of the scene was, or is, is of no consequence.. Politics plays no part here .. His name is entrenched in the Halls of Fame of Northern Soul ..and music in general except for maybe the productions with Dollar and fellow scouser Tiffany ... Liverpool Lads give you a big shout out mate .. and a very speedy recovery ( one of us made a full recovery from a stroke himself 7 years ago ... Steve , Phil and Mad Sam !! )

South London Soul Train - Opinions Please On Young Soulies ?
Hey .... go for it ..and don't be put off by anyone .. I'm a relative newcomer on this site ..but an old Scouser... Blackpool Mecca / Wigan boy ... that now lives in London ,,, If the music and scene is to survive it always needs new blood ...new venues and new DJ's ...it's the love of the music that sees it through . Wish my kids would get into it a bit more ... and you never know ... bit by bit ... with Pharrell and others hitting the right beats ..and taking them to see Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings soon ... might get them wanting to get Dads 45" out and look at his memorabilia collection ... Take and learn from the old , but put your own spin on things and Keep the Faith I only wish I was back in Sauff London ... cause I would have popped over myself and taught you guys how to dance ) Might just do that at some point anyway . when i can draw myself away from the Dub Step and Drum and Bass of Mr Bukem and friends . I wish your venture all the very best . S.L.S.T God bless her and all that sail in her

Rip Frankie Knuckles
Big big big loss to music as a whole .... was a larger in life character in many ways and I had the privileged of meeting the guy a few times over the years and he was a true gent and had time for anyone ... Maybe a bit more will now be done than Barack Obama when he was Senator for Illinois, renaming the street where the Warehouse stood Frankie Knuckles Way. "‹Legend RIP
