Otis Williams New 45 Release
I'm pleased to announce that the masters are almost complete, the label artwork is ready, the mechanical license is sorted and the next release on Soul Intention wil be ... SI005 - Otis Williams - Take Me Back / I Got To Have You Hope to have it available by late Jan. This has got to be one of the best 70's double-siders ever! The owner and prodiucer Kent Washburn has this to say ........... "I am so pleased to see that these two masters finally get to the public. It finally confirms my belief way back in the early 70's, of the serious validity of: (1) the songs, (2)the musicians and (3) the technical staff. These tracks are seriously good, and why they never got released is a mystery to me at this point. I even chatted with Otis (Williams) recently, and he can't even remember why he was in St Louis to start with, or what prompted us to even cut the tracks either However, he does confirm that it is him, and yes, he does remember the songs and recording them, but he can't remember how the whole thing got hooked up to start with, and neither can I!! Never-the-less, Here are the people that helped create these two excellent sides.... Both Sides were Produced by Michael L Smith (now known as Michael Lovesmith, or just Lovesmith) along with Kent Washburn. Steve Litman, (the engineer that recorded and mixed all of their collaborations) was the Engineer. The musicians were the "A" team at that time in St Louis. This "CMC Rhythm Section" consisted of: Bass: Tom Zuzenak or Paul Jackson ( can't really remember which one played Otis' session, but I would think it was Tom Zuzenak from listening to it.) ... Drums: Michael Grimes, and Guitar: Phil Westmoreland ,(both were part of the group, Marcus Kelly and Westmoreland Co.), Keyboard: Michael L Smith. I used them on Everything I did, along with a keyboardist that was not on the Otis session, named: William "Billy B" Bickelhaupt. Some of the Horn Players were Tyrone Perry and David Hines, Myself, and some others whose names escape me (please forgive...smile). Strings were the local Symphony Strings. And, almost 40 years later, Hello from St Louis, et, al.... You now get to finally hear it!!!"

I've never been to this event, even though it's not too far from me. I think I'll give it a try in 2011. Phil

Records That Made You Gobsmacked
I suppose it just illustrates that beauty (and quality) is in the ear of the beholder and the NS scene is a very broad church Phil

Soul Died When Wigan Opened
I'm with you - i'm born again Wigan was the first real soul place I ever went to, the first all-niter I ever went to and for me was, and still is, a magical special place. The whole week was spent, for me and many like me, just waiting for the weekend to go to The casino. The whole experience, the journey there, the journey home, the recreational pharmaceuticals, the latest record purchase, the new sound you heard for the first time, seeing mates from across the land. Magic! Phil

Who Are The Current Big Buyers
I know where you're coming from Mark, but each to their own. I don't only chase rare records myself. I'm after every record that I like and that I don't already own. I don't DJ either and never have particularly (other than the odd night here and there) but still just have a burning desire to own them all on the original vinyl. Phil

Who Are The Current Big Buyers
I have been accused before of overpaying for records. But if you want a record and can afford is it overpaying? I have, based on the reverse of that same logic, seriously underpaid for records too. I spend, compared to the average buyer I suppose, quite a lot on records but value is all about how much you want it and how much you'll pay for it. As to what I do with them? Just play them at home mostly. I only ever play vinyl at home and don't mind getting up every 3 minutes or so to change the record. Phil

Wouldnt It Be Cheaper
I still have about 20-30 of these. Binned at least 50 of them about 18 months ago. Wish I'd kept them now Me and Crofty did them back in 1988 Phil

Biggest Price Drop?
I didn't laugh at all Pete. Just made £999 profit. Come to think of it I did laugh at the time. But not for long cos I spent the lot on other records that mostly decreased in value

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
I know, I know ... But this film shows, if anything , as Feodor Dostoevsky said "There is no subject so old that something new cannot be said about it." Phil

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
Just seen it in Bradford. I've given it 7/10. I enjoyed it, as entertainment pure and simple. It did give me a sense of nostalgia. It wasn't a perfectly accurate representation of the Casino but it did capture the atmosphere. The dance-off was very contrived but worked to an extent as an artisitc tool to showcase the rivalry. but it only lasted a minute or so. Overall quite enjoyable, But what do I know? I've never watched a Russian art house film in my life Phil
