The Ashton Ukrainian club has gone from strength to strength following the re-launch in 2021 and a move to Saturday night. For 2024 we're looking to continue delivery quality rare and underplayed soul from the residents and ever growing list of outstanding guests. Speaking of ‘Rare & Underplayed Soul’ we use that phrase to capture what Ashton tries to deliver musically, which is worth expanding upon. Mainly it's an attempt to move away from the standard music policy strap lines we’re all so used to seeing like; Northern, 60s & 70s, Crossover, Modern, across the board etc. etc. whilst genuinely trying to capture an ethos. The words ‘rare’ and ‘underplayed’ are intended to apply both in their own right and together, it certainly isn't supposed to be limited rare records that are also underplayed……we should have added quality in there too LOL. In a nutshell you will hear all three combinations of the phrase on any given night at the Ukrainian Club; ‘Rare’ (but not for rarities sake) ‘Underplayed’ (but not because they’re not good enough) and of course ‘Rare & Underplayed’ but, all with one eye on the dancefloor. We don’t have a music ‘policy’, all our residents & guests are free to express themselves as they wish, which we believe adds to the magic. So simply expect a great night of quality soul music if you ever get the chance to join us at our friendly little club.

  11. With the tenner you saved you could buy the Lou Rawls version and make up for it

What can I say? I wasn’t one bit surprised by the success of the night - unlike Joan who (as she mentioned in the comments section) told me she had wondered if, after the long gap in Grumpy Soul events, anyone still wanted it!!! My answer to that wasn’t intentionally rude, but in retrospect could’ve been taken as such – “DER” I shouted probably too loudly…thankfully I escaped without reprimand. Intro waffle over – to sum it up all my expectations were met if not exceeded, a great crowd assembled in anticipation (and many a face I’ve not seen at Culcheth before) throw in a fantastic mix of high quality music all night, delivered with such craft by all the DJs, and what’s not to like? I have to say that I didn’t hear a single negative comment all night and many, many exclamations of high praise throughout, which speaks for itself. I should add it was a shame that Dave Welding couldn’t make it to complete the team of usual suspects, but hopefully he could be there next time if we can convince BazM to feature a repeat! (how do you add voting buttons?) Hopefully those who haven’t attended Culcheth previously will have realised just what a great venue this is and plan a return visit, well worth it as the ethos isn’t at all far removed from this wonderful instalment IMO. PS – apologies to the guys in the modern room I didn’t manage a visit but again heard lots of positive comments, so job done clearly.
  12. Something about a bushel I heard Bob but I'm not sure we should be talking about a ladys bushel 😱
  13. Another that did the same job for me......Kev Murph from his Grumpy set...not just a big hitter DJ... but I already knew that 👌 Something extra Grumpy brings is the opportunity to throw these gems in
  14. One of my Grumpy memories that dragged me to the floor, slipped in with aplomb amongst a selection of the unobtainable and fitted so well....class is class, puts things in context nicely 💯
  15. All part of the adventure - in years to come legend will tell of the fact that Grumpy Soul was a magical venue veiled in an invisible aura which only revealed itself to those who were meant to find it 😆

I was about to wax lyrical about last night's instalment at the Ukrainian when I received this message from my good friend Steve Smith and I thought it summed things up beautifully: Nearly every time I go the Ukraine club I come away thinking how good was that and how can they better it next time because it was so good then the following month just ups the level. Last night was one of those times, I really don't think that I heard a bad tune from 7.10pm when I got there until the very last record. Thanks Ste 👌
  16. I like this thread because it's a question I often ask people on the scene when we're first introduced - I've learned that every single one of them has their own unique and entertaining story to tell.....and a common theme is that Northern Soul (or whatever badge you want to pin on it) is all about the experiences, friendships, taste and likes (or dislikes) you have as an individual, which ultimately is all that matters isn't it? For me the introduction to what we would recognize as 'Northern' began at the local youth club in the late 70s but I didn't go to anything other than that until a good friend dragged me to Maximes in Wigan around 1985...then Morecambe and the odd soul night, but I'd say I didn't really get 'into' the scene proper until the early/mid 90s at venues like Tonys in Blackburn, Winsford, Bretby, The Griffin in Leeds and the 100 Club amongst others... All that said (and I've boringly told this story many times) I think the moment I was destined to fall in love with this wonderful music was when I pulled out a big record from my mums collection in a shiny silver cover and dropped the needle on it only to hear the Temptations blast out Get Ready from the speakers, I was 11 years old......it still does the same thing to me today
  17. Simply can't wait - I'm well overdue a Grumpy injection...all references to a great lineup simply unnecessary and truly fantastic to see Mr Harkins tempted down from across the northern boarder.......NOT TO BE MISSED

I have to say we had a great night at the MVP's - myself and the other reprobates from Stockport included...once we'd battled through the roadworks on the M6 North of Preston we pretty much arrived in a timely fashion to hear Jamies' opening set. This was the 2nd time I've been asked to guest by the guys and enjoyed the whole night thoroughly - both musically and socially! If you're in the area, love a great mix of rare soul and haven't been yet it's well worth a visit Thanks again guys
  18. Lookings forwards to another installment at the Ukrainian and a first time for my old pal Kev Murphy behind the decks.......well known for his superb collection of big hitters he also has a wealth of cracking lesser played tunes in the magic playbox which will surprise some! One track that I've always loved and hit me smack between the eyes when he DJ'd as a Grumpy Soul guest is this cracker... It's always great to share a bit of obtainable class and this will be a rare opportunity for Kev to dig around and cut loose
  19. I'm sure Mrs Penn understands that any new purchase was a tenner anyway just like Mrs Ingham Chris
