  1. I'm afraid I don't have a clue where Northern and Modern meet but where would you put these ? Rocky Robbins - We belong together Howard Johnson - Keeping Love new Lilo Thomas - I like your style Greg Phillinganes -baby I do love you Manhattans - Ces't la vie Manhattans - You're gonna love being loved by me Chapter 8 - It's my turn Chapter 8 - How can I get next to you Johnnie Taylor - JUst ain't good enough I would put them all in the same catagory, great vocals, soulful, danceable, listenable, uplifting.
  2. wayne gibson, nosmo king(javelles), tami lynn, Little Anthony - Better use your head.
  3. Depends on whether you want well known northern stuff, or just good quality tracks without all the usual suspects. Diamonds and Pearls on Goldmine is excellent GSCD 76 bit of both The essential Northern soul story GSCD1 ( which I think is deleted now) but absolutely fantastic and worth hunting down all good quality proper Northern soul no pop stuff on it Floorpackin GSCD 114 Living the nightlife on Kent CDKEND 104 mainly stuff on Wand/sceptre This is northern soul volumes 1 and 2 on motown/spectrum You won't go wrong with any of those Kev
  4. best intros SEVEN SOULS - I STILL LOVE YOU DONI BURDICK - BARI TRACK ALEXANDER PATTEN - A LIL LOVIN SOMETIMES PATRICE HOLLOWAY - LOVE AND DESIRE TOMANGOES EDDIE & ERNIE - I CAN'T DO IT THERE'S LOADS MORE
  5. Yes they were from Liverpool and were originally called either the Chants or the Vocal Perfection but I don't think they were the same group that were on RCA. I used to see them regularly at the Mardi Gras in Mount Pleasant when Billy Butler was the DJ and They were two bothers in the group Called Chris & Eddie Amoo, the other two were dumped when they became the Real Thing as they weren't good looking enough. Best record was "Children of the Ghetto" which they wrote and was covered very well by Courtney Pine. Was a great venue the old Mardi Gras, also saw Manchester's Great Expectations there and I think they had a minor hit in the states with something which escapes me at the moment. Also saw Wilson Pickett, Arthur Conley. Kev
  6. On the subject of unreleased tracks what about Deon Jackson - Someday the sun will shine - Personally I think it is an unreleased Bobby Vee track (night has a thousand eyes fame), every time I hear it I can picture Bobby Vee. Having said that I actually quite like him.
  7. Anyone ever go to the 66 club in West Kirby on the Wirral, from late 60's to early 70's Played some cracking stuff - I was a regular from 69 to 71
  8. Being relatively new to this forum I may be going over old ground, but I just wondered whether other people feel the same way that I do over the term northern soul. Within "northern soul" circles it is an accepted term that perhaps isn't given a second thought and is common place. However, talk to people outside of the scene and it becomes the subject of ridicule for whatever reason, more so from people of our generation, because the younger generation seem more open minded about music. I really find it hard to say to people when asked, what kind of music I'm into, to ever say "Northern Soul" - I much prefer to say 60's or 70's soul or just rare soul. Is it the press that have given the term "Northern soul" its current meaning or have Dave Godin's words been turned into something else. Have I got a problem that no one else has!!! Do I need help!! In any event, the phrase has a whole new meaning on e-bay and perhaps we should compile a list of the most unlikely records described as "Northern Soul" on e-bay. How about these for starters Drifters - Under the boardwalk George McRae - Rock your baby
  9. Up until recently I would have said Dee Dee, but now I would say Dionne due to the recent purchase of her Holland Dozier Holland written and produced album on Warners "Just being myself" from 1973 which has the fantastic title track plus "I think you need love" on it, plus "Come back" as covered by the Jones Girls on Music Merchant. If you have never heard the album just buy it - fantastic. Also what about her "Track of the cat" era inc "Move me no mountain"
  10. Oh I almost forgot - Ain't no mountain high enough - Funk Brothers - is fantastic, the more you listen to it the more you forget the vocals and appreciate what a fantastic backing track it is. Found it on a Motown Karaoke cd mis-titled as "Just my imagination" by the Temptations.
  11. Always playing motown, no matter what. So much good stuff to discover especially on albums. My playlist:- Marvelettes - Your cheating ways Chuck Jackson - We'll find a way Edwin Starr & Blinky - We'll find a way Isley Brothers - It's out of the question Supremes - You can't stop a girl in love Temptations - I gotta know now Temptations - Lonely world without your love Teta Vega - I need you now Isley Brothers - Why when love is gone David Ruffin - I've lost everything I've ever loved David Ruffin - Don't stop loving me Four Tops - Until you love someone Chris Clark - Until you love someone Lollipops - Cheating is telling on you Temptations - Save my love for a rainy day Kim Weston - Gonna make it up to you ( boy did I wish this track was around in the 70's)

  13. Anyone got an mp3 file or would sell the album "Crazy legs" at a reasonable price
  14. I have a copy of Gloria (Towanda) Barnes - "Uptown" on Maple and I am going to sell it. I have had this since the early seventies and I know it is one of the rarest albums going. Is anyone interested in buying it or got any idea on value? see attachment for cover photo
  15. Came out on kent cd "Do the crossover baby" CDKEND 105 Pity Otis Redding is overlooked as he is considered too mainstream - Albums are by far the best source of undiscovered material - forget chasing after elusive 45's discover new stuff yourself - check out Otis Redding "Tell the truth " album and two tracks "Give away none of my love" and "the match game" both fantastic tracks
  16. I recently picked up the 45 "Love slipped through my fingers"/ "I gotta get away" on JO-MAR. I understand it is one of 200 pressed up from an album track. Can anyone tell me which album it is from.? I have Gloria Barnes' album on MAPLE, but it only has "I gotta get away" on it and is an alternate take to the single. Did she do an album on A&M under the name of Towanda Barnes. Or was "Love slipped through my fingers" from the vaults and previously unissued. Backing sounds the same as the Ohio Players version, who did the backing on her Maple album. Anyone help?
  17. I Just live for my album tracks so her goes!!! Mickey Stevenson - Stormy Anthony White - Stop and think it over Voices of East Harlem - Just believe in me Maxine Brown - Don't leave me baby Bobby Hutton - Lend a hand Tata Vega - I need you now Willie Hutch - Lets try it over again Willie Hutch - Lucky to be loved by you Thelma Houston - I ain't going nowhere Sandra Wright - I come running back Sweet Inspirations - At last I've found a love someone stop me please
  18. Thanks a million Mark - What is the album called and is it easy to get and either way what sort of money are we talking. Talking of tapes - I used to dangle my mike over the balcony at Wigan (anything to please the ladies) and record all those sounds on soundhog tapes, utter crap tapes with poor quality but better than nothing. Those early tunes during the warm up, as people came in, often became biggies once they had caught on. Took me years to find out what some of them were. From Nov 73 I had on tape ( although I didn't know it at the time) Teen Turbans - We need to be loved Baby Washington - I've got it bad Joe Matthews - Ain't nothing you can do
  19. Back in the early months of Wigan someone played an instrumental version of "You want it you got it" and I seem to remember it being credited to The New York Strings (probably a cover up). I don't think it was just the backing to the Detroit Emeralds, it was laden with strings etc. Perhaps it was a Simon Sousanne made up jobby. I've never seen hide nor hair of it on lists and often wonder if I just imagined it!! Can anyone help
  20. Thanks Stuart, that made me smile and it even got me thinking what other labels might have been owned by famous people. Huff Puff - Elton John Thelma - Louise Redknap Jamie - Louise Redknap Simco - Simon Cowell Kent - Peter Cook & Dudley Moore
