Not a bad DJ either had a great night at his Thursday Club at Slow's Bar on Michigan Ave in Detroit. Spent a few weeks studying at Wayne State on a project and Brad's was across the road before it burnt down. Lot of good local modern Detroit too in collectors boxes above counter. The Tipton is are utterly kosher.

I am not a DJ but I'm Hezbollah when it comes to OVO. I've always been suspsicious of this idea that 'punters' who dance are different from collectors. I have a huge rare soul collection and like to dance when I'm out but if a DJ played off a bootleg and be off like a shot. At Wigan the soul-media used to use the term "the brut-soaked masses" which i though was patronising, it implied that people who danced had no taste and no ability to be discerening about music or labels etc. Rubbish. Whether is danicing or rummaging through boxes, OVO everytime.

Fianl Score was in fact an easy win for the small-frys: Little 23- 14 Large

Haven't heard that Gareth but a female singer that has always intrigued me is Little Sammy Bryant, who defiintely was of restricted growth and was a victim of dwarfism. She sang in the Rev CL Franklin's Gospel Caravan out of Detroit on the same bill as Aretha and Erma Franklin, and Sharon Scott. Any Detroit buffs with any info on Little Sammy can they PM me.

Now that I know you are logged on Jocko I'm getting this one in first. For all us Scottish soul boys with low self esteem what about Wee Willie and The Winners.
-
So many soul singers branded themselves by their height or weight. What is not clear is who wins - liitle or large? To get us started there's Little Stevie Wonder and Lil Major Williams, but can they hack it next to Big Maybelle? Let's have those names please - little or large?

St Johnstone Fc Supporters Await Verdict From Soul Police
soulfulsaint replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
..not so closet anymore big Cheltenham fan as its happens... ...although its a small town Perth has a significant soul legacy originally based on a club called the Ingle Neuk which was on the same management booking circuit as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and was one of the big original mod clubs in Scotland. I was too young but my sister went and used to come home with US imports, which is where I first got the taste. The house band of the Ingle Neuk was the Vikings led by Alan Gorrie, who along with a couple of Dundee guys morphed into the Average White band, the first white group to top the US soul charts. The 'northern' clubs started later after quite a long period of fighting between Perth and Dundee gangs - Pack, Fleet, Shimmy etc. The biggest scraps were at Perth City Hall when 60s bands like Love Affair, Kinks etc played. Before the northern scene happened, the other venue was the Sally, a hotel/club which featured Midge Ure's band, who did a great cover-version of Archie Bell's 'Here I Go Again (looking for My Hole Again) (sic). That was pandemonium most weekends. That's one reason why we opened the Perth Northern Soul Club, and tried not always successfully to ban the gangs. Perth had no catholic senior seconady school and several Perth guys who went to Wigan were at school in Dundee, at Lawside, so in the spirit of generosity we 'invited' Dundee DJs periodically, as part of the peace process. Billy McKenzie of The Associates often came to our club, and my mate Sparky and his band The RBs were also around too. A few of us went into writing me to Echoes and then NME, another local girl Sylvia Patterson went to Smash Hits and a younger guy Craig McLean to the Guardian. -
St Johnstone Fc Supporters Await Verdict From Soul Police

I do and I can name the four Perth guys that were at the opening night at Wigan. The badge that newer post is by a Saints fan club called PSJ who are mostly into soul and indie. Its the same cover as the old Perth City Soul Club which existed at the Corrina, before any of the Dundee clubs (local tiff). If any of you remember the late Ned Jordan from the Dee, he often came to Perth to DJ northern in his youth. British Rail were kind enough to put on an Inverness to London sleeper train which stopped at Wigan Wallgate at a very convenient 12.35. Alas the soul train did not stop at Dundee. C'mon Da Saints. -
RIP Big Man

Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
soulfulsaint replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
Ok Ian, I don't think this was discussed on the previous thread. You have chosen the name Centre City Records, presumably after the business district in Philadelphia. Or maybe inspired by Fat Larry's Band? So which has been the city that has given you the most overall soul satisfaction as a fan, DJ and as a producer - Philadelphia, Detroit, Memphis, Washington? We all have our soft spots, and Detroit usually wins out but I'd welcome your opinion. And don't say Blackpool. Stuart -
Fascinating Jenny and Jewels 'Love is Like and Itching In My Heart/Its a man's Man's Man's World' by Leroy Jones (Hit) would be another good example from same era as Val Palmer. But I didn't know Herbert Hunter and Leroy Jones are one and same. Or rather sometimes the same. Great trivia

Sam Dees - Lonely For You Baby - Sss Int
soulfulsaint replied to Ian Seaman's topic in Look At Your Box
Over played yes but will sustain value. Think Sam Dees is one of those artists, Linda Jones is another, Ty Karim another who have such 'cult' status on northern, rare soul, deep soul and Japanese scene that they will always attract attention. Anything around £250 would be a good price I reckon and suspect price will hold despite the credit crunch. Sam Dees is one of the few singers not affected by global financial trends. -
Remember Swish from York. He be-friended another very talented guy Mac from Perth in Scotland who lived with me in Hull then Manchester. Mac briefly worked at Rowntrees and met Swish somewhere in York. Great visual artist. Sadly he got to deeply involved and died a few years back in Scotland. We had a good going away do for him. But like Swish a dark talent who never fulfilled all his promise.

In true Soul Source style 'Dirty Northern' has already split into two warring camps. Those that see it as a term for gritty down-home R&B style northern ('Dirty Northern' © Tony Smith) and those that have foccussed on the sexually explicit songs, which frankly I have always thought of as 'Horny Northern.' Is there anyone out there who can really get this going with a "post-Stafford modern style horny northern" surely Russ, Steve G, Simon or Robin S can come up with the choooon? For now - - What is 'Dirty Northern'? discuss?
-
Yes it is addictive and at times it can distract you from reality. Must say my addiction ebbs and flows. If the forum gets too 'serious' and involves too much backstabbing, fights between venues, promoters etc, I can leave it for a few weeks and return.

Lost out on, 'Love's Stormy Weather' by Melvin Brown/ James Matthews, on Manship Auction - anyone willing to part with a quality copy?
-
In another thread Tony Smith has coined the phrase 'Dirty Northern' - my interpretation of this is gritty, hard, down home dance-music with none of the elegant orchestral production techniques of Philly etc. etc. Dirty Northern. Great term. I'll start with the old Detroit classic 'Sister Lee', by Singing Sammy Ward. His R&B plea to a departed girlfriend (his sister?) is a killer to this day. Sammy had been dumped by Motown and gone back to his bluesier roots. Your favourite 'Dirty Northern' classic please? (Tony I'll always acknowledge you when I shamelessly 'bootleg' this term)

Me too just back from three days away - brilliant post Russ.

As originator - can I request mods close this post please, has run its course, fun over too much bitching, and old debates.

....careful lots of soul police around some of them keen on nabbing people who threaten to breach race relations legislation. Since Jocko is featuring on this soul police thread. Maybe you should all no that his name is actually taken from the PIR 12" Rythmn Talk by the Philly DJ 'Jocko', a rap version of 'Aint No Stopping Us Now.' A far from criminal record. But - is it legitimate to have a nickname from a 12" especially one with rap overtones? I think the Soul Police should decide?
-
Thank you Russ. At last an honest man. Nothing wrong with maintaining standards in society. Better a bobby than a bootleg.

Ian Levine, Motorcity, Centre City, Blackpool Mecca, And Swons
soulfulsaint replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
I refuse to say why I know this but Christine Gotjke the former soulie and one time love of Ian Levine's life makes high performance swimwear and letoards which she sells via her power store on eBay. The clue is Rochdale Swimming Club where another former Mecca girl Pat Wall once coached. Pat was one of the great dancers on the scene, and if I remember a medallist for England at swmimming. She introduced me to the Torch and NS. Now that is enough information and James you cannot use this as stick to beat Ian. He is entirely innocent. (Unless he's knocking out hi-energy swimsuits that he hasn't told me about)
