  1. I never used that track as I didn't consider it Northern enough. I'm pretty sure I didn't do copies of those cassettes you sent me for anyone else. What I did do was make cassettes of Stafford playlist which included some of the unreleased Motown cuts that we did play like "Suspicion", "Love starved heart" etc. along with regular non-Motown 45s.
  2. He's on the thread now. RobbK. I must be mistaken as he doesn't seem to know.
  3. Ask Bob Klein on here. I have a hazy recollection this track was on a cassette he sent me.

  5. For the uninitiated what is a "massive hit by bots" ? Why does it occur ? Bots are kinda false accounts used to flood a topic on YT for instance.
  6. Wouldn't have a clue how to download a soundclip. Did have a scanner/printer few years back and could download images. Gone now. Stopped working. Don't have a camera or mobile and if I did no idea how to download to laptop.
  7. Carla 102 has "My tune" on other side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYoccFs_Bi0&list=RDBYoccFs_Bi0&start_radio=1 Deon Jackson side is the Hampton instr. He is not singing. Other side is "Love makes the world go round" I've never had the 45 but I assume "Love is...." the vocal Version but I guess it could be instr., same as Philly Dawgs pairing on Tuba ? There's a copy of Deon for sale here https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/8314214
  8. I've got the Capitols issue. It's "Hello Stranger 66". Usual common Karen issue is midtempo vocal missing "66" in title. https://www.discogs.com/release/4511195-The-Capitols-Hello-Stranger-66-Cool-Jerk I dug it out and yes it sounds the same as Connoisseur 45. And Deon Jackson below. Looks like Riley Hampton release is on CARLA 102
  9. There's another 3 issues of that by Philly Dawgs, Capitols [alternate Karen design] and Deon Jackson " Love makes...." [b-side alternate]
  10. I think it might have been me. Think sent Jim McClusky version too. Just sending 45s over that fitted the dancing style and swapping for Northern 45s. I deffo sent over Jackie Darnell which got booted on Rhythm too. Gene P. and Butch I reckon did them. Two dj's I knew at the time.
  11. I think it was the early 70's when Godin asked readers of his B&S column to write to BBC to ask for more soul music coverage. I did, and to the best of my recollection, the answer was that the demographic didn't warrant more exposure. At the time I assumed the demographic referred to was based on colour rather than class.
  12. You missed one. "A political tool to challenge the dominance of middle class theatre" Sure that was the title of Richard's Obsessives c/u
  13. My claim to fame on the dance floor is being with Dave Raistrick in a club in S.Carolina back in '81. We'd found a copy of "I'll pay the price" at the Wax Museum. I got the dj to play it and hit the floor. The odd spin and backdrop and nonchalantly glided back to my table. Then these girls started to come up complementing me on my footwork. To Dave's amusement they seemed to think I was a fantastic shagger. Once he'd stopped sniggering he noticed that some of the guys were not that happy with the attention I was getting and he thought it best we leave. Which we did rather hurriedly to avoid any unpleasantness.
  14. According to Clare I'm a lovely mover myself but then she would say that. I'm not interested in watching the videos you mention but just to stick up for Levanna I did catch her on YT being interviewed by some reggae guy where she chose a few soul and reggae tracks. She came across well and it put me on to an Italian reggae release that I wasn't aware of. If she makes a few bob from her videos good luck to her. I agree with you that the Proms is an odd setting for Northern. Very middle class but then I didn't go to the theatre to see your play because I thought going to the theatre was a middle class pursuit and no place for Northern. More Rosencrantz and Guildenstern than Tony & Tyrone.
  15. I think looking back I was having a senior moment. I did buy that test press re-issue but no idea what colour it is now.
  16. Hard to imagine being without it.
  17. It's a great record of which I have four different copies but I guess overplayed in some venues.
  18. I'm sticking with my lorgnette. I'd just been over the road for my fags and paper. Wearing a mask so popped glasses on top of head. Bent over to pick up paper and glasses fell off. Lens came out so I'm scrambling on the floor for ten minutes looking for lens. How it got under the ice cream fridge I'll never know. Hence preoccupation with glasses. Cool my a**e !
  19. I completely forgot about DG. He wore glasses. A pattern developing.
  20. I read some of the blurb. I quite liked the notion that the reason NS never got the coverage, unlike punk, was because we had no intellectuals with access to the media shaping the musical narrative. I mean, I've read your posts and you're trying. And what about Stuart Cosgrove. He wears glasses FFS !
  21. You should get a discount for bulk !
  22. Judging from the number of VG and VG- 45s I've noticed going through US eBay for not inconsiderable amounts recently, the guy should soon be inundated with work and will be opening a chain of outlets if it carries on.
  23. Thanks to Dave Withers for passing on the info on this great online documentary all about... Arctic Records Friday Arts is a 30-minute arts, culture and entertainment magazine that features three distinct stories about the arts and the artists in our area. Friday Arts casts a light on some of Philadelphia's best-kept secrets in the arts. ART OF LIFE — PRODUCED BY KAREN SMYLES Founded by WDAS program director/deejay Jimmy Bishop in conjunction with Jamie/Guyden Records in 1964, Arctic Records was one of Philadelphia’s most important early soul labels, greatly influencing the subsequent rise of Philly soul. Barbara Mason’s classic “Yes, I’m Ready” was the label’s biggest seller in 1965; she quickly became Arctic’s flagship artist, making a slew of splendid follow-ups as well. Kenny Gamble gained invaluable experience at Arctic, not just as a songwriter and producer but as a smooth-voiced singer. Arctic hosted the Volcanos and the Ambassadors, two of the City of Brotherly Love’s finest male vocal groups, and the sexy, sultry Honey & the Bees. Daryl Hall got his start at Arctic as lead tenor with blue-eyed soulsters the Temptones; Della Humphrey’s debut Arctic single hit when she was barely in her teens. Add vocalists Kenny Hamber, Winfield Parker, and Herb Johnson; inspired one-offs by Cindy Gibson, Dee Dee Barnes, and Billy Floyd, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in their pre-Teddy days, and what you end up with is an incredibly consistent Philly soul label, from its inaugural girl group issue by the Tiffanys to the stirring Royal Five 45 that closed out Arctic’s release schedule. hit to play - wait out for the 5 second pause Friday Arts sits down with Frank Lipsius, President of Jamie Record Company, and son of Arctic founder, for the story behind it all. We also meet and hear the smooth sounds of a few original Arctic recording artists as they come together in the studio to work on “Soul Singer”, new songs produced by legendary record producer, Tom Moulton. And last but not least, Philadelphia’s own rock & soul music historian, Jerry Blavat takes us back in time and ties it all together. The video and full article can be viewed via http://whyy.org/cms/fridayarts/arctic-records/
  24. Dave Raistrick's "Stars and Stripes" is opening a second location in Stockport at 10 Mealhouse Brow, Stockport, SK1 1JP. This is just off Underbank heading up to the Market Hall. It will be open from next week Thursday to Saturday 10am to 6pm. I will be in the shop from tomorrow and have around 2000 soul albums plus 800 soul 45s to view.
