  1. Well I have a 22 year old son,a 21 year old stepdaughter, a 22 year old stepson and 4 nieces and nephews all around mid-20's. Also met many of their friends. Despite any proximity to the music from the more immediate members of my family I can categorically state that NONE are into NS or show any interest whatsover. The only eclectic trait I can discern is that they're equally at home listening to hip-hop as a white guitar band as long as it's in the Charts or fashionable. Probably nearest any of them come to it is that Foundations 45 on Pye [forgot title] which appears to be very very popular. A couple of tunes on an I-pod or bit of a mix at some student night in Manchester does not make a NS fan. Nor does force-feeding it to your kids. ROD
  2. Yes it's on Goldmine Sevens GS0001 with "Hit & Run" Pat Lewis on other side. No original 60's release. ROD
  3. I wonder about that too especially when you see the number of bids 45s attract on Ebay. Hardly any really if you consider how many fans are purportedly out there. ROD
  4. I do think you're being a bit hard on Russ as you're judging his part in the Casino with the benefit of hindsight. Yes your list of naff moments is spot on, apart from This England" which IMO is better appreciated today than our initial reaction to it at the time, but they were all 2-3 years down the line from the opening night. At first, as part of an ensemble, Russ was no different to anyone else. I agree we didn't first go to Wigan to hear Russ, like say we did in the later years to hear Richard, but back in '73, with the exception of Levine's weekly changing playlists, you kinda knew what the big sounds were and as long as you heard them it didn't matter who was playing them. That changed over the years and a more exclusive/"one-off" ethos crept in and then it became more important who the dj was. That Russ had lost it by then is also true. As for Richard I remember him getting his break at the Pendulem through Barry Tasker and then Dj-ing at VaVa's in Bolton [did he run it as well?] but he made his name at Wigan and the least we can say that Russ was aware of the importance of getting a decent line-up together. I thought your summation of Dave Evison was extremely diplomatic in that "groundbreaking" is not the first description that would occur to me either. He is as you say a nice guy and I wonder if Russ's perceived persona is not clouding a fair assessment of the time. ROD

"But chubby "50 something" women" SteveG quote Oh dear, dear, dear! I hope Steve you have more than a passing resemblance to Sean Bean or that could rebound rather nastily. Still, it will earn me enormous Brownie points with my wife when I show her that compared to some I've made significant progress to becoming a model "new man". Let's just hope that nobody brings this to the ATTENTION of the FEMALE CONTRIBUTORS to this thread. ROD

Well I was embarrased at times FOR those taking part in that it was always going to be about POG dressing up and getting a laugh out of the audience, but not BY the participants who did their best to get across what it meant to them at the time and now. I think once you start describing parts of the scene as "sad" and by extension those who prefer the more nostalgic/retro side of things, then you're making subjective judgements based on your own preferences and prejudices. Similar to what went on in the OVO thread recently. I think you've just got to accept that not everybody approaches Northern with the same mindset but that doesn't make them an embarrassment or set them up as a "whipping boy" for what others may perceive as a sideshow to the main event. It was never gonna be an in-depth look at Northern on the POG show, was it? Why this feigned shock, horror, hostility from the usual suspects. I can read more inane drivel in the Events section from the cognoscenti than I heard from Sandy and the two ladies tonight. Sorry, but the dancers were in the main a bit naff, although Andantes did them no favours. ROD
  8. Ive got a "OO soul" WDJ with blank b-side which is a bit of a bummer cos I like the instr. That's got a stamped matrix. I just noticed it wasn't listed in guide #3. Maybe you've updated later editions ROD

I do know that those Mar-v-lus/ One-der-ful releases on President were considered dodgy by US label owners. I was in their warehouse in '79 and one of the guys asked me about President. He'd heard they'd put stuff out and he'd not been a party to it. ROD

  18. You're right Paul, Im thinking of Chris Hamilton. ROD
  19. Do you mean Pierre Hunt on Golden Wheels. Wasn't that a 70's version. ROD
  20. OK I've skimmed through that but I think I'll wait for the film to come out to get the full gist. Leaving aside any 60's perceived bias aren't you saying that the modern side of it isn't as modern as it was, so that current tracks don't fit in. Or is it that you're referring to more "indie" style tracks that maybe aren't modern enough for the YK2 scene wherever that is nowadays. ROD
  21. I wish!! Them two and a couple of others, maybe Eddie Billips on Peachtree if he played it first. What Butch is the best at IMO is being able to recognise a good potential record on first hearing and knowing when to programme it into his sets. And of course finding records for himself which probably make up the majority of his plays. ROD
  22. Im gonna kick myself for this display of ego but I did. I sold 'em Butch sometime in early 90's. ROD
  23. I thought Sandy Golden was an occasional spin for Richard at the Casino. I mean I know it was but did Rob M. play it first. Also whilst I think Butch is streets ahead it's not exactly rocket science to break Johnny Praye and the Arthur Willis, that Marc has recently listened to, as both are good Northern 45s with all the right ingredients ROD
  24. I think that was Soul Town [orange label]. Weren't they US re-issues maybe legit, maybe not. Like Trip or Million Seller. There was that BJD. Was that Alexander Patten? First things I remember were "Let the good times roll" on French Stateside, Formations on blue MGM, "Hey girl don't bother me" on a later ABC design from original release. Long time ago now so memory a bit hazy. ROD
  25. Just like to point out that I haven't used the term "Dullard" to describe anybody. I think that was Mr Trouble. Im pretty much live and let live on this issue although I am a bit disappointed with some of the defenders of OVO whom I consider to be too dogmatic defending an orthodoxy that has been subject to change down through the years, especially as regards the playing of legit re-issues.
