I'd Like To Order A Record Please
It was in Affleck's yes. I've googled "All about Eve" and they appear to be a rock group and I only sold soul/R&B/hip-hop/house so it couldn't have been me. There were a few other record places in there. However had you sauntered up with an "All about Eve" rarity under your arm and I'd noticed it I would have had you escorted from the building. I had Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Ron Tyson in one day so obviously I had standards to keep up. ROD

I'd Like To Order A Record Please
"this job would be perfect if it wasn't for the customers" My experience exactly when running that stall in Manchester. People putting records away and not turning up to pick them up. I am, despite scurrilous rumours, very easy-going but sometimes even I had had enough and put stuff back on sale. The then buyer would eventually show his face and you'd think I'd chopped up his children and fed them to his wife. I'd point out that when he said he'd be in Thursday I'd kinda assumed he meant within the current fiscal year. Most, after an unseemly tantrum, were apologetic so I usually relented and they'd then buy a couple and put another lot away which they didn't turn up for either. Coupled with "why didn't you tell me you had that" and "why did you sell it to him and not me" plus their inability to solve even the easiest clue in the Guardian cryptic crossword has contributed to my rather juandiced view of record buyers. Having said that though only one guy on here has failed to stump up and as it was only £8 no big deal. ROD

Rules
The point about it being a UK release was to give it at least some legitmacy.BITD some of the very first club tunes were played off of Stateside etc...... All Mike has to do (with LJH) is wait 30 years or so for acceptance.... Yes Kev but the reason for that was because at the time they were new to our ears and that was the format they were found on. They weren't some 30+ year old oldie on a re-release label. I think context is all here. If Mike is doing an oldies night then I see nothing wrong with playing a legitimate UK re-release. If it's an "upfront" or something different" or underplayed night [or whatever the term used to differentiate between the two camps are] then I think it was Russ who pointed out that Mike had loads of good records that would fit the bill a bit better than a re-released LJH.

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
Well that's rich coming from the person who blamed me for getting a months worth of detentions. When you asked me for advice on an excuse to cover your missing school and I said put down a funeral, I never dreamt you'd choose your own.

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
I must protest at this sloppy posting. It was Janice Nicholls of "Thank your lucky stars" fame who gave it "foive" This is in no way a vendetta against Souljer6, whom I sat next to in class for two years and who throughout that time copied my History and English Literature homework. I have no idea why as he was doing Economics and Maths. ROD

Bad Grading From A Ss Member
Adam, thanks for the recommendation. I agree with you, and earlier Bearsy, about trying to sort it out with the seller first where it is a genuine difference of opinion on grading but in this instance no way is this particular 45 anyway approaching M-. It is misrepresentation, and I see another old cantankerous SS member has agreed with me. Why people do it I've no idea cos you would think that at some stage their reputation would be such they would find it hard to sell but maybe enough buyers out there who aren't fussed that the odd comeback is immaterial to them. There's now been a few posts with unsatisfied buyers so there is a problem. Miss H has now agreed to buy a 45 for £100 which, if it's M- value is £150, is nowhere near that at VG-. She's done that because as she says she feels intimidated being new to collecting. Things like this coupled with selling boots/pressings/second issues advertised somewhat ambiguously reflect badly on all sellers IMO and they do have an affect on us all because next time Miss H wants to but over the web she is going to think twice. I do note that the seller in question is overseas with few posts so maybe he has tenuous links to the scene and isn't really concerned with the satisfaction of his fellow SS-ers, as he's highly unlikely to bump into any of us.

As I know for a fact that souljer6 has an NVQ Level I in French History that he borrowed, I wouldn't be too quick to dismiss his theory. He has shown me his extensive research he carried out whilst waiting for the kettle to boil last Tuesday evening and I think this is pretty conclusive if circumstantial evidence. From Shakespeare reporting the words of the English king on the very day. And gentlemen in England now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, Now that unleaded is only 56 centimes per litre.

Bearsy, I see what you mean. An altercation over whether Ex or M and refunded no I wouldn't. Some seller sending me a supposed M- 45 which had an unplayable b-side, WOL, a warp, crackles/scuffs. Im afraid I would. Pete, Had a look but not sure what you're referring to. George Smith [100]. Little E.S.?

Maybe Matt, the seller should have thought of that before taking £150 for a M- 45 with an unplayable b-side. Also what is the point of Miss H, Bearsy and Nev all coming on here with tales of woe but the rest of us don't have a clue who these sellers are and we could be next. Occurs to me all three of you could be referring to the same guy but we'll never know cos there's no mechanism to highlight dodgy sellers or sellers who just haven't got a clue as to how to grade. Bad Grading From A Ss Member
M- should look like new with any very small blemish only noticeable under strong light. Unplayable flip means VG-. You don't just grade one side of the 45. ROD

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
OR. BARRY SUBNORMAL: "Welcome to Film Review where we will be discussing the new "Soulboy" movie. With me I have three experts in the field, each with their own unique perspective on those heady days in the mid-70's at the Wigan Casino. First, I'd like to ask Jocko McKermode for his memories of the time and how faithfully he feels the film reflects that period JMcK: Well, it's a farce. As we say up here a Ben McTraversty, Jimmy. BS: It's Barry actually. So you feel it fails to capture the "je ne sais quoi" of that era? JMcK: Yes I do. Im pretty certain from what I've been told that no French people were regular attendees at the Casino although I couldn't swear to it as I didn't start going until 1979, Jimmy... BS: Barry! I didn't realise that. So your appraisal of the movie is not based on immediate involvement at the time in the Northern Soul scene? JMcK: I'd prefer not to use that term as I feel it's very limiting and tends to exclude a lot of music that sounds nothing like Northern Soul, Jimmy BS: Please call me Barry. It's short for Barry. So your critique is based on exactly what? JMcK: I have an MDMA in soulful house and funky edge rare soul as long as Winstanley didn't play it at any time in the past. It's an MDMAISHAFERSALAWDPIAATITP. I'd give you my card but as you can imagine printing costs are extortionate so I've only had the one done, Jimmy BS: It's fucking Barry but thank you anyway. Moving on to my next guest, Paul... P: Did I tell you I wrote a play. On my own. It's mine. BS: Yes I think you may have mentioned it once or twice. P: It was brill. This film is not brill. People who saw my play were brill. People who see this film are not brill. BS: In what way is this film not as you say "brill" P: Im brill so without my brill it's not brill BS: Would both not appeal to the same audience? P: No, mine appealed to a brill audience. This appeals to a non-brill audience. BS: Thank you Paul. And finally let's get the view from a member of today's youth. Paul? P: My play is brill! BS: Im sorry, I was referring to the other Paul, one of today's young promoters and dj's P#2: His play is brill. 11/10 from me BS: Well Paul you can't really give 11/10 can you as it just makes a mockery out of the voting system. P#2: Yes I can. I can do what I want. I gave my dad 2/10 for making me tidy my room. BS: So what score did you give this movie. P#2: I gave it 1/10 and then gave myself 10/10 for awarding it such low marks plus Paul gave me 12/10 for that, which I think means Im in with a chance in the final. BS: Well I think we'll leave it.... P#2: Im giving you 3/10 for a shit interview! BS: Join me next... P#2: Cameraman is dogshit. 1/10!! BS: ... week, when we examine the career of Leni Riefenstahl and discover why even she drew the line at filming Russ Winstanley relaxing at home.

Soulboy - The Movie. You've Seen It So . .
How does the scoring work then? I thought it was "I saw the film and I enjoyed it or not". I assume above 5 is enjoyed and below disappointed. Are we giving marks for cinematography, plot and character development etc. This is a music buff site rather than a film site. Wouldn't know where to start on that, personally. And I can't see the point of comparing it to other films as it's just down to personal taste. Not seen any mentioned by Paul B and was bored stiff by the Deer Hunter. Last thing I really liked was "The Mist" on Sky but Im not claiming it's a cinematic masterpiece. I'd give that 10/10. ROD

£342 For A Carver
It is a bootleg. It's been cut without the permission of the legal owners and sold. Secondly carvers being played. If you wanna cut an unreleased track off a CD and play it there's no problem. You could play it off the CD but for whatever reason you wanna play it off disc. Ady is on here. I don't think he'd disagree IF you had bought the CD in question. It is just for personal use and not for resale.

Voices Of East Harlem - Cashing In
I brought this second issue malarkey up on 13 June on Edward Hamilton thread in the Wants section. I figured it was at best a sloppy use of the term and at worst a simple marketing ploy to either avoid Ebay rules or at it's very worst to enable sellers to sell boots to unsuspecting buyers. If it is the only way [and I don't think it is] of getting around Ebay rules I can't see why the seller can't notify each bidder privately that it is regarded as a boot. If this particular 45 was bought at set sale then I woulda thought the price woulda reflected the second issue status so the buyer should have known he was getting a boot or re-issue or whatever it is. Highly unlikely to get an original for £5 say when it usually sells at £20-30. ROD

First Showing Of The Movie "soulboy"
Webby, you're spot on. When I walked through the door in September '73 after the Mecca Im pretty sure Russ was on the decks. OK, he seems to have a poor reputation nowadays but I don't know him personally and don't know if it is earned. What I do know is that a lot of those slagging him off weren't anywhere near Station Rd on that night or later. There seems to be this assumed orthodoxy that certain perople's efforts are more worthy than others. Paul Sadot and Dave Shaw are mentioned on this thread. Never seen the play and never read the book and more to the point never heard of them or came across them at Wigan. I can't see there is anything to be gained by me in understanding my experiences there through their eyes. Not that I need to "understand" much. It was a night out doing what I liked to do. Can't see this film being any different. Won't be going to see it at the cinema as it's not my type of film as I prefer foreign language cinema re-telling the struggles of the Marxist proletariat in the face of uncaring capitalism, especially the bit where the alien bites the scantily clad teenage heroine's head off. Might catch it if it comes on Sky ROD
