When A Cover Version Is Better Than The Original?
The first version of Of All The Hearts (To Break) was done by the Deceptions on Brooks. This was then covered by Black and Blue on Game and was then covered by Peace, Justice and Equality which is my favourite (love the talkie intro), who I believe happened to be a rebranded Deceptions. I Prefer Lee Bates Ichiban re-working of his Instant recording What Am I Gonna Do.

When A Cover Version Is Better Than The Original?
1. Maxine Brown (Robert Dobyne) - I Can't Get Along Without You - CUR 2. Jessie Butler (Lonnie Youngblood) - Let Me Bring out The Woman I You - Bound Sound LP 3. Hoagy Lands (Ronnie Mitchell) - A Man Ain't No Stronger Than His Heart - Specrum. But this flips back and forth all the time. Could be recorded at same time but came out after RM. 4. Ella Washington (Clarence Carter) - Too Weak To Fight - SS7 5. Willie Johnson (Clarence Carter) - I Don't Want To See Myself - Future Stars, but I do love CC 6. Spencer Wiggins (Etta James) - I'd Rather Go Blind - Fame, I know a complete belter but personally SW does it for me. 7. Etta James (Jessie James) - I Never Meant To Love Him - MCA CD, previously unreleased Fame production 8. Margie Joseph (Supremes) - Stop In The Name Of Love - Volt LP, the 7minute LP version with the talkie bit at the beginning. 9. Candi Staton or Laura Lee (Jeanie Green) - Sure as Sin - Fame or Jap Chess LP 10. Debbie Taylor (Mavis Staples) - I have Learned To Do Without You - Polydor. Also flips back and forth all the time.

Jimmy Burns On Manship & Bobby Sheen
His release before Dr Love, My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You on Dimension is a top class bit of deep soul

The Blue Notes - We Can Make It
I think Standing By Your Girl/Its' Over was their only 7" release on Glades. There are a couple of missing numbers 1753 & 1759, but as Latimore's - Long Distance Love - 1752 is a 1979 release, I'd think it would be unlikely a Blue Notes release as it would be 2 years after the release of the single and LP.

Just How Rare Is The Top Want On Your List?
Found that quite bizarre as well when looking for it. I like Left-Over Love as well, nice funky soul. As for the one I'm after has no dancefloor appeal, I only know of two copies and ones in Atlanta and the other was bought on ebay last year by someone who has links to Kings Lynn.

Otis Clay - (Artist Of The Week)
After first hearing Bob Jones play the only way is up on his radio show in the mid 80's, little did I know how much pleasure his music would give me over the following years. Don't think there's a record I don't like of his, with his Hi period being my favourite. Saying that his live version of Love Don't Love Nobody takes some beating, 8 mins of soul heaven.

Debbie Taylor - Just Don't Pay - Shotgun Records

Charles Russell/new Image, It Ain't Easy

Ian Levine Productions
I thought G C Camerons No Need To Explain/Out Of My Mind was one of the best double sider's of the early 90's, irrespective of who was involved.

Are C.d's On The Way Out ?
I have accepted that downloads seem to be the format of choice for new releases, but I personally still like holding a physical product. If I like a track, I do search if a CD exists and prefer to buy that, unless the price prohibitively high and I can't justify the cost I'll pay for the download. I also have a mental block at buying reissue vinyl when there's an original out there, even though it may be completely unavailable to me. I'm happy to have it on a CD in the interim, with the (foolish) expectation I may get the original one day. One of the things that does seal CD purchases for me as people have mentioned, are the CD booklets and unreleased tracks stuff. The supplementary liner notes provided by companies such as Kent and Rhino add to the whole experience and as long as they provide quality documentation I'll still keep buying their CD's.

Charles Russell/new Image, It Ain't Easy
There was an article written about it in Voices from the Shadows which I think was written by Arthur Fenn. I'll see if I can dig it out and attach a scan

Benny Price-"monkey See,monkey Do"
By the way its by Banny Price and is on Jewel. It's chased by Deep collectors as its got "There Goes The Girl" on the other side , but luckily its much cheaper than his other release.

The Gypsies / Flirtations - (Artist Of The Week)
I do like those picture sleeves you keep popping up with. Almost makes me want to start collecting Japanese releases....... But that'll put me into another spiralling world I'd never get free from. I have enough trouble collecting US releases, let alone another countries pressing. But, the do look good.

Naff Record
Yep, it does deserve to be put in the trash, but don't have the heart to do it. Never played it and never will. Looks M- though anyones for £50.......

Naff Record
Mines Lena Zavaroni - Ma He's Making Eyes At Me on Stax. It was shortly after purchasing this, that I decided that I no longer wanted to be a label completest and concentrated on records I liked rather than completing label runs, not that there's anything wrong with complete sets. The smaller label sets I've got look rather spiffing.

Soul Nights In Frankfurt?
I'm now working for a German organisation based in Frankfurt, so I'm going to have a few trips over there.  I've looked in the events section to see if there were any regular soul nights, but couldn't see any obvious ones (maybe not looking properly) as I'd like to arrange some trips to coincide with them. regards, John

John Donvon - Looking For Your Love - Paradigm
Another member who will remain anonymous, phoned me and told me what Dave was selling them for and that they'd just bought one. The only reason I didn't buy one was due to me already being over my monthly spending budget, so that's why I know he was selling them for £60

John Donvon - Looking For Your Love - Paradigm
Dave Thorley had a few a while back and was selling them for £60 each (I think)

Dickie Wonder - Nobody Knows
