  1. She's one of my favourite soul singers of all time with her Fame output IMO at the top of the soul tree and I've been eagerly awaiting this release since it was first mentioned. I'd also like to congratulate the guys at Ace/Kent for their XL/SOM, Goldwax releases. Also the Jimmy Hughes, Swamp Dogg and many other Southern Soul related have been a joy to listen to, bringing some happiness to an old embittered soul fan. I thought my Candi Staton Fame CD craving's were satisfied when the the Honest John CD came out in 2004, but this takes it to another level. I look forward to getting this and the other gems from the vaults of Rick Hall.
  2. Been a big fan of Gene Taylor - You Got My Nose Wide Open/Don't Go Away for a long time. One side a masterpiece of deep soul the other a magic piece of crossover, with Mr Womack at the helm, you can't go wrong can you?

That was my thought as well, thanks for all the additional info

I started to think I'd got it wrong regarding Maurice Williams - Being Without You/Baby Baby, being released as 302. I've just checked again, maybe it got released twice under the old and new numbes? Never heard of those 600 numbers, any chance of an upload into Refosoul?
  5. I'm a massive fan of the mans work as a perfomer and producer. His LP Total Desruction To Your Mind is just an amazing piece of work, with tracks like Synthetic World and I Was Born Blue, are as, or more relevant now than on its release on 1970 (think it was). As Ady mentioned My Resume, on a more slightly lighter note Knowing I'm Pleasing Me And You is a personal favourite of mine. I would recommend the all the Swamp Dogg stuff Kent have released. If you don't like any of them, i'll take them off your hands as doubles
  6. I've never been convinced that putting fragile on a package changes the way its handled or delivered by any of the postal services. Maybe that's just my pessimistic view of postal services in general and that has nothing to do with my view of the competance of any individual person working for them. My postie has done a great job delivering the many parcels and I even got on quite friendly terms with the guys in the holding office in Orpington, when they saw me walk in through the door, they'd smile and scoot off to get my packages..... such nice men

Chalky/Dave, Thanks for the info. Maybe I should go and see if I can get copies of the R&B Indies books to save time and effort, but that then takes the fun out of doing it...... Cheers, John

I've got some time on my hands and i looked to see if there was a disco of Deesu on the web and couldn't find one, so decided to build one, which has left me with a couple of questions. Additions/amendments in Bold 301 - Wilbert Harrison - Clementine/Sentimental Journey 302 - Maurice Williams - Being Without You/Baby, Baby 303 - Daisy Burris - Four Strong Winds/In Love To Stay 304 - Zodiacs - May I (Speak With You)/This Feeling 305 - Warren Lee - Star Review/Waiting For A Bus 306 - Willie West - Greatest Love/Hello Mama 307 - Maurice Williams - Oo Poo Pah Do (Part 1)/Oo Poo Pah Do (Part 2) 308 - Carlton Lee & The Delfonics - Time Heals All Pain/Come On Down 309 - Zodiacs - Don't Ever Leave Me/Surely 310 - Zoofs - Get To Know Yourself/Not So Near 311 - Maurice Williams - Don't Be Half Safe/How To Pick A Winner 312 - Cleto & The Chaparrals - Miner Joe/Campy Stuff 313 - Joe Haywood - Say You Will/Sadie Mae 314 - Willie West - Did You Have Fun/Keep You Mine 315 - Warren Lee - Ever Since I've Been Loving You/Climb The Ladder 316 - Joe Haywood - Play A Cornbread Song For Me And My Baby/I Wanna Love You 317 - Willie West - Face The Music/Baby, Baby I Love You 318 - Maurice Williams & Zodiacs - Live In Concert Stay '68/Live In Concert Dance Dance'68 319 - Buddy Skipper - Restless Breed/Cancel The Reservation 320 - Eldridge Holmes - Now That I've Lost You/Where Is Love 45-300 - Eldridge Holmes - The Book/No Substitute 45-301 - Diamond Joe - Look Way Back/ABC Song 45-302 - Warren Lee - Mama Said We Can't Get Married/A Lady 45-303 - Eldridge Holmes - If I Were A Carpenter/No Substitute 45-304 - ?? - ??/?? 45-305 - Eldridge Holmes - Lovely Woman/What's Your Name 45-306 - Toby King - Operator/Love One Another 1006 - Gospel Cavaliers - You Can't Make It On Your Own/Jesus is waiting 601 - George Porters' Joyride - Cissy Strut/Sneaky Freaky 602 - Gospel Cavaliers - Live My Life/Love One Another I don't have the Daisy Burris, so would like to know what the other side is? I'd like to see if someone has a scan of the Wilbert Harrison release Was release 316 by Joe Haywood the last Deesu release distributed by Dover? I don't have 317/318 and the Buddy Skipper and Eldridge Holmes don't mention Dover even though they're still under the old numbering system. Under the new numbering system I can't seem to find any reference for release 45-304 which is sandwiched between two Eldridge Holmes releases. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated by this sad anorak
  9. Tony that's a really cruel thing to post knowing there's 362 days to wait till the 2012 record store day.
  10. Mine was waiting for me on the mat after being away. What a fantastic release and both the cover and lable look really special.
  11. All eight of the Quiet Elegance singles on Hi, cheap as chips and full of soul. Johnny Moore's Blue Rock stuff wont break the bank either.
  12. I expect some flack on this. I was too young to go to Wigan/Mecca, so wasn't part of the cover-up chasing at the time. I've never liked the concept of the cover-up as I feel its more about raising the profile of the DJ than the record/artist. What's wrong with DJs getting credit and bookings for discovering/playing quality tunes and moving forward? Whatever I think of coverups they will still go on in clubs, but should they have a place on radio shows? I also don't like the cheque book DJ culture. For me its the way the set flows rather than how many expensive records you can fit into one set and it shows that the DJ has thought about their set rather that just a load of dick swinging.

it came out on a UK or New Zealand release of the disco compilation LP called "All Platinum Gold". Dont think the US version has it on it.
  14. Are you completly sure on this, as i think it might be later and I cant remember it being reviewed or played at that time. The the earliest i saw it was on sales lists by Record Corner where i was a regular visitor. There were also Record Corner and John Doe adverts for it in issue 17 of voices which was in 1991. It was also in the last batch of new release 12"s I bought before I gave up buying the last time and that was early 1992. Maybe it was recorded earlier and was only availiable to a select few before more were found and made more available?

Personally I think its an okay tune, that would appeal to people as it has a northern/R&B style backing. But I'm not convinced there is any soulfulness to the vocals and is indistinguishable to many of late 50's early 60's white pop records that were around at the time. It would be be a sad state of affiars if this took priority over playing something soulful just on the merit of it being rare or obscure.
  16. I always thought that the GM releases came first and then either became or was replaced by Bump Shop. The GM numbers can be very confusing and might have originally started out as plate or can reference numbers on the GM releases and then became release number for Bump Shop, as GM 128-1 is on both the GM and Bump Shop records. There's more confusion when looking at the Final Decisions releases on Bump Shop/Love they all have a GM 162 prefix, but have different suffix's: Pusher/Keep On Walking 162-1/162-2 Keep on Walking/Hour Of Your Need 162-AS Pusher/I Feel what you Feel 162-4/162-5 If that didn't add to the confusion the Stix And Stoned release of Rouge Plant Blues has a GM 136-1 on the left hand side of the label. Some, but not all the pressings of this release have the number 131 underneath the artist name, which have been used as the release numbers on the GM discography. So you could say that the number underneath the artist is independent to the release number? Then you get the Turn Of The Century release of Money Cant which has a reference number of A-125-1M and the number 125 under the artist name, which seem to correspond. The Albert Jones release Up To The Sun has a number of GM 153, but under the artist name is the number 9441 on that and the Reflections side. I think there's a lot of confusing information as to what the release numbers are and I'm of the opinion that there is only one release of the Dee Edwards on Bump Shop rather than two.

Its a 7" from 1975 on the New York label Double M. The official A-side is Looking For Something For Nothing, which is a funky thing. Seen it ranging from £20-£75
  18. Surely there's a competly different market for wands done by Debbie McGhee......
  19. Moerers got a few
  20. Pete, It's a fabulous tune and also came out on Rip Cor. This is a strange one, as a lot of dealers put a high price on it. But if you see it go through Ebay, it goes for significantly cheaper than the "book" value. If you have a couple of deep collectors who want it, maybe it could attain that price. But saying that, it's not that rare and would expect this record to be already sitting in many deep collections. I know i haven't realy given you a price, but I hope it helps in some way?
  21. Oh come on Brett.... you're as much of a train spotter as me. I bet you've been itching to post a list up.

Nope, it also got issued as well. Its virtually the same as the original demo, but without the "promotional not for sale" text and is styrene whereas the re-issue is vinyl. I put up a scan of it a few years ago and even Garry commented that he hadn't seen one before. Cliff Steel's also got one and I would assume a few others too. Heres the link to the thread:
  23. Would have thought about £20 or less for the re-presses. There was a good thread a couple of years ago about these and comparing them to the originals as they're pressed off of the same plates.
  24. I think only the single Spinning Top on Beale St. got released in the US. I read a while back that this LP was concieved when she was touring in Japan and had some mastertapes with her, hense only the Japan release. I've seen it sell for around £50 recently, but if soulfulness was the only factor of price, it'll be a grand. I have so many fond memories London clubs in the 80's when I play this LP, probably played by Ivor........
  25. I've wondered this over the last few years and it's got nothing to do with getting hold of limited edition 7's on the hope of making a profit. In the 60's/70's some records were pressed in their thousands, if not more for the bigger hit's. These days demand is smaller so labels dont want to over-spend in pressing records they're not going to sell or press too little, thus losing out revenue with third parties making the money as demand increases. So, what sort of numbers of new vinyl releases are pressed these days?
