Soul Discovery 209radio/solar Radio
Just wanted to thank Mick for asking me down to the studio to play a few tunes and chew the fat about the music and the "scene" in the UK. Was great also to meet Mark & Steve after conversing with them before through a combination of internet and telephone!! In this age of technology it's nice to actually meet people!! Pity Roger couldn't make it through.....maybe next time. Hopefully Mick can come up with a playlist for you all, and thanks for the mails re the music..........always a pleasure playing some quality new music. It was interesting to share some thoughts on the state of the scene/events etc. I think it will need a round 2 though to get it all out of the brain...........so much to cover, so much to say............it's good to get it discussed though I think, particularly at the moment. The new music's never been so plentiful/accessible, and there's plenty of good quality there, and yet, notable exceptions aside, struggles to fill venues. Cheers, Mark R

What Was The Other All Nighter In Hinckley Called
Yes, Bubbles was the nightclub in The Horsefair in Hinckley, a small street/alley way off the main street (Castle Street??). I think it's still a nightclub to this day. I used to go to a mid-week thing at the Working Mens Club (?)..........the room was definitely called The Alkin Suite (might have the spelling wrong??). I reckon these were Monday nights, but it's a looooonng time ago. As I recall, some big name DJ's used to do that, not just locals. Cheers, Mark R

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
Fair play.....didn't realise that, usually only having to concern myself with Technics...........so if you're telling me that a Technics headshell will fit A Vestax deck, then fine......easy job!! Cheers, Mark R
-
O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
Agreed, but you do need to be armed with that info from your stylus spec, and how do you know they will be compatible? Of course, if you know they are a partcular type of deck, you can bring a pair of headshells/styli and you're laughing. And 30 secs (x2) to re-set the decks can be an eternity when you're preparing for battle and wanting to concentrate on tune selection. It is an irony that some of this seems lost on lots of people who are putting £kkk's tunes on the decks. You wouldn't put normal unleaded in your McLaren Mercedes SLR would you.............?? Cheers, Mark R Cheers, Mark R

O.v.o And C.r.&.p Venues
I never understand this, because different styli require different tracking weight/anti-skate settings. In a relative sense, your own styli, whatever these settings, might be an advantage but it's not the whole story and not completely the answer from my understanding. I'd be more worried about the dreaded talc Malc ( ).............I would definitley play me raries off CD-R in an environment like that!! Instant sandpaper anyone???? I remember DJ'ing in Bournmouth for top lad Jason Desmond, and when we got there he was taking a couple of boxes out of his bag and promptly changed the styli.........."I'm not asking you guys to come all this way and ruin your records on crap equipment...." he proclaimed. How refreshing! For the reasons outlined at the start of my post, I think it is the promoters responsibility actually. I agree with Ian, it's nuts..........your tunes ARE there to be played and not just caressed, and you might NOT consider them an investment............but you DO LOVE THEM really don't you??? Just think about it seriously for a moment. Cheers, Mark R

You lose the high frequency response with age............fact! Doesn't make your statement about looking after your hearing untrue though. Cheers, Mark R

What Was The Other All Nighter In Hinckley Called
Blimey Russ, if that's the one out towards Stoke Golding as you head out of Hinckley, I used to play 5-a-side there, and at that time it was a right shit hole............would've been a great niter venue then!!! Cheers, Mark R

What Was The Other All Nighter In Hinckley Called

How Good Is This ?
Yup, was a fairly regular spin for Dave Evison at that time..........that's where I first heard it, and if you thinks it's good in home Russ, wait until you hear it LOUD. Great memories for me this one. I'm sure I have it on a tape from Hinckley somewhere. My copy was quite noisy, so I bought another, but as I recall that wasn't that much better.........was that a trait of this pressing?? Still got both copies......must dig it out! Cheers, Mark R

Why The Venom
Epic, you been talking to our mutual friend Pete Mason?? Cheers, Mark R

Why The Venom
Having been confronted by the ad for this on the back of the latest Manifesto this morning, it got me thinking, and it's just so EMBARRASING, and IMHO is the exact opposite of respecting the old venue. What the hell must average people think? Wigan Casino 35th Anniversary.........give me a break!! For those that went and enjoyed (not me...too young....wish I could of!), let them remember it how it was, and just get on with what is good about todays soul scene. Cheers, Mark R

Neo Smile... Bootleg?
Genuine question.......not loaded.......but is the "real one" a REAL ONE, if you see what I mean.........I'm guessing it is, as the label name mentioned on Traxsource is mentioned on the 12" label. Cheers, Mark R
