Harpo got the fantastic send off he deserved… great turnout especially by the old Wolves crowd with a touching service + superb wake afterwards. Some fantastic tunes spun by Mark, Paul H, Martin S + Sandi at The Ashmore pub afterwards + even though I maybe a little the worse for wear now after a long session, it was good to see so much love and genuine affection for one of the soul scenes true characters sadly now gone… R.I.P. Got an email this morning and my 1st thought was “here we go again 🙈” after the chaos of last time! Anyway despite having a few items chalked off the 2 orders I made previously, I thought I’d have a mooch… Maybe it’s just me but looked like all the decent stuff off his website has been hoovered up. Only saw one record I would possibly have bought at half price with everything else falling in to the “already got” or “not interested in” category. As per previous there’s plenty of records on there you can get cheaper elsewhere even with the discount and does seem to be an awful lot of crap and bang average fodder amongst what’s left even allowing for the fact others may disagree with my tastes.

I did mention it earlier in the week in this section of the forum after Soul Spam posted a tribute photo of some of the Katz Soul Club team which included Harpo though admittedly it could easily be missed being as it wasn’t a dedicated thread. I didn’t know him as well as many other folks on here although we were acquainted with one another as we both used to play at Katz Soul Club. Sadly due to his health issues he had to give up his residency there before the move and rebrand to ‘Soul at the Sheaf’. Last time I saw him was at the Dave Hulmes memorial night @ The Clarendon Suite on May 31st where he DJ’d and danced the night away. Excellent DJ and a genuinely nice person who will be sadly missed by all that knew him R.I.P.

Just checked back through my emails and yes they do send email order acknowledgements out.

Yes still going and done a fair bit of business with them over the years. Usually quite fast at posting orders out and never had any problems with them myself. Then again I’ve never had to phone or email them about anything so can’t comment on their customer support. Honestly don’t recall whether they send order confirmations/ackowledgements out by email, I know most companies do but I have come across a few that don’t. Hope you get sorted…

So made 2 orders on January 5th. Waited patiently for 31 days as understood the situation. Then rang Stella as felt a full calendar month was long enough and she said I would receive the items this week… 2 days later both orders duly arrived. Just one item was out of stock and refunded and not bothered as own the original 12” anyway. Only ordered the 7” as it was around half book price and wasn’t going to have to pay extra postage on it. Having a vinyl night tonight so will give them all a spin along with a couple of other new arrivals and see if they meet grading criteria but a visual inspection suggests they should do. So long as they play ok I’m more than happy as had some real bargains well below normal market rate.

So played both the 7” stock copy 5:42 version back to back with the album 5:50 version… cued up both and started together fading in and out as they played along side each other. Have to say they just sounded the same to me. Happily stand corrected if wrong but just seemed like the LP version had an additional 8 seconds as the single faded the outro out sooner.

This is basically the problem I have with ordering off JM… maybe I’m just unlucky but had quite a few orders cancelled outright over the years because the item was either out of stock or couldn’t be found (possibly misfiled) and one with multiple items had one record refunded because it couldn’t be located. Now before anyone gets over excited I’m not slagging the guy off just saying how it is for me. I’m sure there are punters on here who have been dealing with John Manship for decades and rarely if ever had a problem. Unfortunately I have and not had this issue with other dealers on this level (just the occasional cock up which unfortunately will always happen now and again). I’ve placed a couple of orders with him during this sales window as there were some great bargains. Not received either order yet and doubt I will get all the items ordered but not too fussed. I knew he would be overwhelmed so wasn’t expecting the records to be posted out straight away. Sure the majority will arrive in the not too distant future and any that can’t be found will be sourced elsewhere. Overall despite some problems now and again I always find John Manship worth dealing with.

I’ve got the original USA 7” stock copy which is 5:42 long according to the label. The 7” promo issue is a shorter 4:18 version + have the LP as well which is timed at 5:50. No idea if the promo version is a different mix or just a shorter edit. Not heard the 12” so no idea if that’s a different mix though it looks like it may just be the same version as the LP possibly? Both the 12” versions from 81 + 82 are both shown as 5:52 timings on Discogs. Gonna spin a few later so will dig out the LP + 7” and compare… As already mentioned the more recent Jackin’ Disco 4 is just the radio edit of Shapeshifters “Lola’s Theme” backed with what looks like the 4:18 JT promo version of “What About My Love”. Got both the Damaris and Dave + Maurissa cover version releases as well but still can’t beat the original for me.

Yes had the same problem several times over the last couple of years so I don’t bother ordering from his Discogs listings as many of them have been sold but not deleted from his inventory. If you see something on there it’s always best to check on his website and search to see if it’s still available as his website is far more up to date.
