  1. yes , not the way I want to remember Marvin. we all know about his strange childhood . will remember him through his music. simply the greatest soul singer that ever lived. [just my opinion of course .] SHORTY
  2. If indeed "All about his Life and Death" should be a harrowing experience, sadly Marvins life was a cornucopia of ;drugs, sex, sado masochism , mental illness, depression, patricide, religous etremism, transexualism, homophobia and sadness. As a taster try some excellent reads ;David Ritz= "Divided Soul", Jan gaye ="After The dance", Frankie gaye "= "My Brother".On A lighter note checkout Soul Source ;" Soul Media .page; "Aint No Mountain high Enough" a video posted by the excellent Sunnysoul ,Performed by Dusty Springfield and ,wait for it Engleburt Humperdink, Dont laugh it aint that bad .LOL johnny Hart.
  3. I'm surprised a promoter has capitalised on her attendance :) For some reason I wouldn't imagine that would happen at Rugby or the 100 Club.
  4. Well said Nev and by the way she is a genuine sweetheart, she may not be the most knowledgable but is keen find out more and hear new (to her) sounds. Check out her Soul Mates series of interviews on You Tube with the likes of Eddie Hubbard, Ben Summers and Paul Thrower all well worth a watch
  5. Irrespective of personal ethics or etiquette ,underground v commercial etc ...Levanna ,(who I have yet to meet or even see at a venue ,so no bias here ) comes across as a real soul fan ,expresses herself with her dance moves ,like she's feeling the sound and not just trying to slot in moves learned from YouTube clips of wigan dancers . The tracks on this mix show that she is open to experimenting and embracing new sounds ,so for me ,whether you like or don't like her choices ,she is a good ambassador for those of us who like alternative from the top 500 and the nostalgia trip retro scene . I'm seeing a good amount of posts on forums from young soul fans ,expressing their thirst for hearing different sounds ,not just listening but also wanting to venture into the smaller rooms too . Active young soul fans ,who wanna hear and dance to my kinda soul sounds ,get my vote !
  6. Yes, yes & YES!, one of the heroes of Southern Soul for me. I hope it gets a media release on DVD.
  7. Looking forward to this ! A legend for sure !

  10. He was a a legend of new Orleans music and a producer of so many classic records,he will be sadly missed heaven has gained a fantastic piano player R I P
  11. I grew up on the western edge of the delta south usa... a few hours from New Orleans When we were young, back in the 70s, we'd head over to New Orleans to check out the record stores, and go to clubs such as Tip's or other live music venues. I got to witness Professor Longhair, The Funky Meters, lots of Jazz at Snug Harbor and legends such as Allen T, Irma Thomas or Lee Dorsey. We lost a legend. We lost a benchmark. Brickyard Blues, indeed...
  12. You deserve a break Ady, you're not getting any younger All the best Jim.

  15. listened to this at dek greenhoffs the other day ,called in for a quick coffee and it had just come through the post , she has a great voice ,
  16. not surprising considering the saturation of events on the other two nights of every w/end , where theres an opportunity people will milk it , know its sounds a tad cynical but theres loads of wannabee dj,s and promoters who want to do their own thing and sunday is the only time to do it ,
  17. yeah . some real good nights at the kings hall in the modern room. just kind of fizzled out in the end . stoke probably not renowned as a hotbed for modern but good while it lasted. shorty
  18. got mine on vinyl. love Charlie Wilson , Syleena Johnson and the Lorraine Clarke-Mcghie is a real grower as is the old school of the Creators. just checked the extra tracks on the deluxe version . I like Kashif - superfly and the Victor Haynes update of for real.would have been nice if they had included a download voucher for these . but I will get them any way shorty
