  1. it has to be the same group, antler records was a buck ram label
  2. congratulations on the exhibition of the ads you dug up
  3. this group was almost entirely members of shrine groups btw
  4. yes it is very hard to find
  5. Although I already expressed my opinion on whether I like the record, both sides of the record sound like they were clearly trying to make a (blue-eyed) soul record. What makes this less of a soul record than Dusty Springfield's material for example? It actually sounds more soul than some Springfield material to me.
  6. It is NOT the pharoahs under a different name, the pharoahs do the background music though. The Intentions were the rival group of the Siberians. They combined later as the New Testament Band on Skyhero/Tablet. There is an interview on my website (www.sittinginthepark.com).
  7. thanks everyone for responding. The Robert Plant did actually sound like they were producing a (blue eyed) soul record to me given the production style, song, etc. What does the other side sound like?
  8. Most copies are trashed because it was a big record in Chicago and lots of copies came unsleeved from people's basements. Records that always turn up clean are usually ones that nobody played and then the deadstock got exported from the US.
  9. Yes, it's on Okeh. All the discographies list a second Cheers on Okeh as the last 45 on the label but I'm pretty sure it was never released. I would love to hear the other record if tapes of it ever surface. Also, vaguely related, Big Jim's Border Crossing on Zanzee totally rips off the backing track.
  10. have you successfully defended yourself against a fraudulent chargeback from paypal by using the registered tracking number? I'm just wondering if it does work. Thanks.
  11. I do think some sellers are over paranoid about chargebacks as it is a frustrating, even traumatic experience when it happens. If a seller insists on express (which is very weird to England btw, most sellers only do it to France, Italy, and a few south american countries) I think you should point out all the positive feedback you have, indicating that you are definitely not a scammer. Either way, I understand why you wouldn't want to pay $40 shipping also, just explaining why the seller might have been insisting on it even if it was not a safer option for the actual record getting to you. Thanks.
  12. awesome record, this was a hit in Chicago and was their best record (even Richard Pegue told me that and he produced their hit "I'm not ready to settle down"). Guessing at a price, maybe $50 for a mint copy?
  13. I'm posting a response here since the thread was locked before I could respond. I did ask Pete to reopen the thread but I didn't give him enough time to respond and do it, can a mod please merge this into the thread? this is the statement I'm responding to: ---- It's one of the best British produced Northern Soul records I've ever heard - it's as good as Steve Aldo, John Andrews...you need to understand the genre before you slag it off Bob. --- There are a few points you just made that I disagree with. 1) I have no idea what British produced or non-British produced has to do with the quality of the record. Are you saying that a record should be considered better than it really is if it is if it's British produced? It seems like a total nonsequitur. There are a bunch of British sweet soul records I like, I don't think of them differently because they are British. 2) I was evaluating it as a soul record, not as a northern soul record. In fact, I think it *is* a soul record (e.g. not a rock record or pop record, etc.). I just think it's a bad soul record, plus it's a cover of a good soul record, why would I want to hear a bad version of it? 3) Whether or not it's an amazing "northern soul" record is something I can't evaluate. In fact, I said in my message that I don't have knowledge of "northern soul". However, I do know enough about soul music to evaluate a soul record and your comment comes across as very dismissive of me like I'm too stupid to have an opinion. The podcast was called "solid soul sensations" and throughout the podcast the music is referred to as soul or even crossover. And I made my specific perspective clear and you know where I'm coming from (a US soul collector with no ties to the northern scene). If you think it's an amazing "northern soul" record, that is totally fine, but that doesn't change my evaluation of it as a soul record. Also, I'm entitled to my opinion and I wasn't attacking you or Ian with that statement and even qualified it as such. There's no reason to be dismissive of me. I mad specific points about what was bad about the song, you didn't respond saying anything about it except that it was British and I was wrong. Thank you.
  14. I have a huge backlog of chicago artists to interview already. I was thinking about doing just a phone interview and posting. But some other people have radio shows and need people to interview, so it would great for them too.
  15. he's always on some "send me a check ASAP, I'm living from record sale to record sale" BS. He says he has 200,000 records or something like that. He might actually sell some of them if he priced them at the price someone would buy them. Also: https://waxidermy.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=37937
  16. it would be great if someone could do an interview and post a recording or transcription on the web for people to see. It probably wouldn't be a lot of work as they only had that one record, and it would be super informative.
  17. I have no idea. However: 1) apparently gary toms is a common name (which is suprising to me, I thought it was a pseudonym). It's the real name of the 7-6-5-4... dude 2) if there was a gary toms from Chicago who went to New York (which is where the album was done) and recorded, I'm pretty sure someone from the scene would have mentioned it at some point. Lots of Chicago people involved with disco were going to Miami to record around then also, I can't think of people who went to NYC. 3) Apparently the recording artist's son is also named Gary Toms and calls himself "DJ Scorpio". Here an angelfire (! that still exists?) page: https://www.angelfire.com/hiphop/basskings/ there is an email address on the page for the "bass kings" if you want to try to contact his son. However, I really don't think it's the same person at this point, esp. given that it is a common name and this person's roots seem to be NYC. The Betty Scott on that flyer is definitely the Del-Vetts singer.
  18. I have never had a package lost as a seller, registered or unregistered. But I don't understand why everyone is missing the point of the seller wanting a shipping method that protects themselves from fraudulent chargebacks. Again, it's protecting the seller, not the buyer. Whether it needs to be $40 or not is another issue, but the problem isn't that the seller sends a package that actually gets lost or damaged. You might be the most honest person in the world, but the seller doesn't know that. And there are specific countries where chargebacks are extremely frequent.
  19. Another negative about registered is that if you want insurance you have to declare full value. Also, have you ever tried to do an insurance postal claim for a broken record? it's usually hopeless, although I know some people in smaller cities who have done it successfully. One of the best options (which most sellers don't currently use) is to send it first class international and insure through a 3rd party like endicia. You can declare whatever you want on the customs too, and the insurance is cheaper and they supposedly pay much more often.
  20. I was trying to say above that I've heard paypal won't take the registration number as tracking in a claim, which is why the seller is not necessarily trying to rip off the buyer. I think you might need a signature required service.
  21. I never knew that you're not supposed to send anything over $400 with registered (was on the website, text below). 1. The content value is less than or equal to $400 PS Form 2976, Customs - CN 22 - Sender's Declaration (online form) 2. The content value is greater than $400 Items over $400 are not allowed to be mailed using this service. The item must be mailed using Global Express Guaranteed service, Express Mail International service, or Priority Mail International service (other than Flat Rate Envelopes or Small Flat Rate Priced Boxes). Please choose another mailing service. ---------------------- it says this on the website too which contradicts it. I'm not sure the insurance is included in the registered price though. Registered Mail¢Å¾¢ Service Get maximum security for your valuable items. Registered Mail items can be insured for up to $25,000 at your Post Office.
  22. maybe vicki styles was a member of the sparks? I always thought vicki williams was from Chicago, as Morgan Park is middle class Black neighbhorhood on the southwest side of Chicago, right next to Beverly.
  23. I don't think you understand the perspective of the seller (and this is coming from a person who buys zillions of records on ebay and never sells). The tracking isn't protection against the post office. It's protection against fradulent "never arrived" chargebacks. I'm on another message board filled with record dealers always complaining and describing how this actually adds up to a relatively large percentage of all sales (although it's more prevalent in certain countries). 100% agree
  24. this is the best thing in the history of anything
  25. That professionals is the Hollywood Saxons. Given that they were from LA and the shows advertised are Miami it's probably not that group either.
