I never noticed that, I guess it must be the same guy. That guy is from Milwaukee though. Thanks for the info!

Supurbs - Only For Lovers - Alteen
I don't think it is. The Sonic artist is from Milwaukee. Billy though this guy was from Chicago. I don't think it is the Bobby Taylor on Chytowns either, who is supposedly somehow from new york.

What Makes A Tune 'rare'
apparently this happened to the Tip Top label stock. I think someone mentioned this already but one thing I've heard several times for pressing runs that were scrapped was that there was some manufacturing defect -- e.g. it skipped when played.

Clara Hardy On Tuna
I agree it's not worth 400 pounds. I just don't understand how you can say it's worth less than when it was selling all the time on ebay. Maybe in the UK you do see it everywhere for sale, just online I don't though. In the long run, 100-200 copies isn't that much for the population of soul collectors to absorb. I don't know how many came out but it sure doesn't seem like 1000. Other records like Betty Lloyd came up in quantity, went down, and then went back up. Time will tell I guess.

Clara Hardy On Tuna
I don't really see this as the same thing as Danny Moore. Slowly leaking some copies out on ebay is totally different than set saleing a bulk amount of copies on the northern scene. It never went as low as 75 pounds when it was on ebay every week, how is it worth 75 now that it's dried up? even if 100 copies of this were dumped on the scene, that is a relatively low amount compared to other titles and it is a quality title that i think people will want to keep.

Central 1179 - Crazy Or What?
I think soul collectors (the market for these books) aren't constantly searching amazon for rare soul books. You might do better just putting them up for sale in record sales sections.

What Makes A Tune 'rare'
I totally agree with this and was thinking about this the other day. There seems to be a huge category of "300 pound" records that are all somehow worth 300 pounds. Some will never sell for much while there are others that never come up and that I would gladly pay 300 pounds for. I don't know if I'm talking about rarity or demand at this point though.

What Makes A Tune 'rare'
The only way to really know this is to find order slips from pressing plants. When my friend was working on a comp of material that was pressed at Boddie in Ohio, he found 1000 and even 5000 order forms for records that were ultra-rare or even no-known-copies records (things nobody had ever heard of before).

What Makes A Tune 'rare'
It's usually impossible to know what happened. I think most often the story is that the stock was not distributed and just thrown out. It definitely is true though that many ultra-rare were pressed 1000 copies or more though, that doesn't mean there's 1000 copies out there now. It's always strange to read sellers text when they say "only 50 copies pressed!" or something, like they just made it up.

A Few Sales For A Sunday Afternoon
I believe you, I was just pointing that out that it's rarer. I think it has to be rarer than the black vinyl as I have that and have seen that a few times.

A Few Sales For A Sunday Afternoon
I never knew that bobby brinkley and the squires record came out on colored vinyl

Soul Generation On Tru-Ba-Dor
it doesn't turn up much but it never goes for much either. that is the only record i've seen on that label but i'm not an expert on detroit labels so i guess there could be another one.

Surreal Dj Requests
last week on my radio show someone requested Benny Mardones - into the night. beat that for stupid requests...
-
Drifters "i Need You Now"
I always thought this was a great funky uptempo record with a really weird edge to it (they intentionally do dischordant harmony at some points). Also, produced by Lou Courtney. I've never seen any reference / discussion of it here or anywhere for that matter. Is this a "known" northern record? What are peoples opinions of it?

Chicago Record Store Help
the beverlys employee you are referring to was sadly murdered in 2007, very sad and bizarre incident
-
Chicago Record Store Help
you're thinking of pizzeria uno, also a famous chicago pizza place
-
Chicago Record Store Help
it is true that some giordanos are worse than other ones and it is also a big chain in chicago. their pizza is what i consider the most stereotypical "chicago style" pizza though.

Supurbs - Only For Lovers - Alteen
I have the Robert Taylor and two different Drake and the Ensolids. Drake and the Ensolids are from Morgan Park (southwest Chicago neighborhood near Beverly). I'm not sure about Robert Taylor as apparently there were like 3 different Robert Taylors recording in Chicago and Milwaukee. Thanks. I'm pretty sure the grey supurbs is not a boot. Thanks.

Supurbs - Only For Lovers - Alteen
Hi Robb. I have not interviewed Marshall Thompson or the Supurbs, sorry. I did interview the Voices who are the girl singers on all the Al-Teen records. Other records on the label include Johnny McCall and Earl Duff. Winner (the label elvin spencer was on) is also the same label as Al-Teen. In Chicago I see the superbs most commonly on the gold label, blue is the rarest in my experience.

Rarest Record
there are probably hundreds of 1-off records around, "rarest" doesn't mean that much. "most valuable" means more given established market values on some ultra-rarities
