  1. What Mike wanted to achieve he succeeded. Excellent version.

Hi Karen, I tried to make the point I wasn't against someone trying to set up a successful enterprise. IMO, and thats the key point, its been set up with a degree of cynicism to make cash, no more or less. If the 'entenepeurs' could have latched onto something that they percieved as more successful they would have. I didn't (and won't) dismiss the past, but again IMO, this is just an attempt to cash in on a nostalgia trip. A relevant and accurate homage to WC would get my support, and I suspect of a lot of others would agree as well. Until that happens I'll stick clear of any blatant commercilisation that has no relevance to what I know as NS, either now or historically. Cheers Tabs

I've been reading this thread with a wry smile. The bottom line is some enterprise has set up a "theme caf / eatery" to make money. It really is that pure and simple. The fact it's associated with Northern Soul and Wigan Casino is immaterial. If they could make a buck using Uncle Joes Mint Ball's they would have. We might not agree with the commercialisation of what was an underground scene in the 70's but nostalgia in all its forms is still a money maker. IMO, for all the valid reasons previously discussed, they can stick it where the sun don't shine. I'll live with my memories and I don't have any inclination to have a latte in a setting which has no relevance to the scene then or now.

A lot of the CD's I get are for special occasions, eg anniversaries, new venue etc. I find they tend to promote the type of venue they are promoting. Consequenlty an across the board will contain a mixture of sounds which won't neccessarily gell togeteher. As Soul Girl says don't look a gift horse in the mouth. If a CD only contains 2 tracks I haven't heard then its a winner. Best Tabs

  12. It was a Casino record, but not played solely there. No idea of current value but somewhere in my distant memories I seem to remember it was used in a film. Anyone confirm?

Just watched my recording of this and what a pile of steaming poo. This program used racism to sensationalize what never existed. Is it because of the times we live in that racism is such an emotive topic, and was it used purely for that effect? Just reminds me of the same inaccuracies that were politically motivated by England Our England. 30 years on and how little changes.
  14. So by your definition anybody who ignores a responsibilty to honour an obligation is a 'right person'. Intresting view point and not one I agree with.
  15. Agree to a certain extent but as the last person left standing will you turn off the lights as you leave?
  16. And your definition of 'right people' is ..........?
  17. IMO not much too worry about. In no particular order:- Politics - always been a part of the scene (in fact anything you care to mention). I believe this can be ignored. Too many venues. Possibly correct but if there wasn't the demand / numbers then there wouldn't be so many promotions. Quality sounds - they will always be discovered. Again my opinion but as the scene is now so diverse and covers so many genres new records will always be avaialble. My only concern is that the rare soul scene is ageing. The number of young ( and I mean 20 yo +) people I see in my travels is negligible. All the venues I've been too have an average age of 45+. Common sense says this is not sustainable. Without the young blood it is inevitable that the scene will shrink and eventually die. Good topic and I enjoyed Silk! Best Tabs
  18. A genius who didn't truly get the recognition he deserved in his lifetime. I would like to think he's being appreciated now as he gives the angels a few lessons in how to cut a tune. Thanks for the memories RIP
