Outsiders Views
The silly thing is though there are some cracking tunes to be found. I've trawled my N S library and will start the ball rolling with my 5 tunes to take us back to Wigan Pier! the above is a quote from that forum - wish i had a pound for every time people said to me 'you used to go to that wigan pier didnt you?'

Signatures On Records
Good question Dave. If they are legit signatures IMO they should add value. I have a copy of a crackin' blue-eyed stomper by called 'She's Gone' by Jerry G & Co on Clevetown- has been signed by Jerry G to someone else, looks legit enough but not sure if I'd get anymore for it? Remember when it seemed to be fashionable though in the late 70's to either write tyour name (tho I never did) or plonk a big 'X' on the play side of records!!

Dobie Gray-out On The Floor
dunno mate - will check tonite when i get home, but defo has the extended OOTF version on it....think I played it out once and a few peeps came up and said they noticed a slight difference in the track, so I explained it was a bit longer, think the ending is different if I remember right. Whats the rarest of the 2 - US or UK or both the same? Grant

Mel Carter "love Test"
never heard this but bet it doesn't sound as much like the Loveboat theme as Cody Marshall's 'The Thought Of Loving You' (brilliant record by the way spun by Mr Searling at Wigan)

Here's One For U Lot ..requests
when i used to dj in stockport i used to get inundated with requests, lots of them because the punters knoew I had the tunes in my box, but others out of the blue too, everyone expects you to have every northern soul record in your 100, 200 box whatever, and yes some go away miffed that you dont happen to have the sound they want....Gene I have also had the hummers and singers, quite funny some of them when trying to make out what the f**k they are on about!

Searling Play From Late 76

You'd Think They'd Try And Make It Less Blatant
agree with soultrader on this one, and afterall people have the right to buy if they wish, ideal for people who maybe dont collect records who just wanna listen to some northern on their car cd player on on their i-pod in the gym....lets face it most of the real cds out there contain the same old crap over and over again. not defending these sales but like soultrader says there are better things to do and more important things in life.

The Ritz All Dayer
think Ritz was monthly, certainly not weekly. Think Northern dominated Greg, and certainly Northern fans outnumbered the funk boys at the Ritz by a mile, we just learned to accept that this was a part of the scene and certainly the Ritz...we used to record the 60' s spots there but never did we onec record a funk spot at the time....funny, wish we had now though.

The Ritz All Dayer
In circa 77/78, usually went there after Wigan Saturday all-niter for the sunday all-dayers, usually kicking off around 12 noon. The place was like a palace compared to the Casino, clean toilets, nice seating areas, balcony, decent bars etc. The dancefloor was sprung as soulfulsaint describes, raised up and with a rail around it, so you had to go up a few steps to get on it (nearly went down them coming out of a spin once!). The tables all had the little table lamps. The dj box was to the left of the stage if I remember right, again up another set of steps set on the stage. Music wise, it was a mix of 60's oldies/new 60's discoveries mixed with mecca stuff which a lot of were new releases at the time, e.g. Brainstorm, Tavares, Bo Kirland, etc. spun by Ian Levine and Colin Curtis from the Blackpool Mecca. Typical 60's dj's included Richard Searling, Dave Evison, Pat Brady, Neil Rushton, etc. Used to be something like an hour of so of 60's and then an hour of the funk stuff ( at the time but quite like a lot of it now!) The place had a good atmosphere although there was banter between the Northern Soul boys and the funk boys in their straight-leg pegs and whistles!! Also remember either Curtis or Levine spinning Donna Summer 'I Feel Love' 12" before it even got into the UK charts. Last bus to Cheadle Hulme right outside the Ritz door at 11.00-ish. Great place, good memories. Grant

The Best Stafford
yes but nothing like now Chalky and certainly not as many local soul nites etc. also unless you had a car a lot of them were unreachable in the wigan days where most people let the train take the strain. a lot of us were too young to drive too.....bit off topic this (Karen's fault....again ) Grant

The Best Stafford
Suppose its simply down to stuff being first played at certain venues or hammered at certain venues that jogs the memory Karen, and with venues like Wigan & Stafford being such a big part of the scenes history I suppose that it is easy to relate to type of tunes played at these venues....make sense? doubt it!!
