  1. Saw with interest John Manship has Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos - Return To Spanish Harlem (Speed ) on his auction. I was talking to Johnny Fingers at the last Attic night about this track, I was playing the other side "Already Satisfied" as Johnny asked about it. Soulful Kinda Music website ( https://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/tmiddleton.htm ) strangely doesn't list the flip side, listing as: Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos Speed 1016 - Return To Spanish Harlem / ? - ? Couple of points - Has Already Satisfied ever had much club interest. I like Return to Spanish Harlem for its quirky northern/latino feel but in my opinion Already Satisfied is the superior northern side, perhaps I'm just old fashioned. - Are there copies without Already Satisfied on flip? Just curious about those question marks.
  2. Sorry, memory failure, not a date stamp, written on. Took some diggin out! I'm well aware this isn't an original but my point is this is more credible as it's not pretending to be something else, and I've more respect for that and the chance it may be (mildly) collectable one day in its own right.
  3. That's what I was thinking, am trying to keep my mind open as to if the date stamp has any retro appeal? I'm struggling to recall what the original looks llike, I think it was very close to the "original" re-issue if memeory serves me right, so wouldn't be so close to this more recent one. I'm still of the opinion why not put a current date stamp on if you want a date stamp to identify it as what it is. I'm sure I've got a Jerry Williams - If you ask me, (second issue) with a 1973 date stamp on it that now seems quite cool as it identifies the record clearly as what it is.
  4. Do wish we could get some respect for labels. This is promoted as a re-issue by www.soulon45 so no attempt to con but why re-issueing with the date stamp? Why try for such obvious look-a-likes? Tend to have more respect for re-issues that have their own identity that may one day be colectable in their own right.
  5. Heh heh, thanks for that Nev, think I'll be DJing in one of those Aprons at the next Attic, I wonder if She's intertested in sponsorship?
  6. Agree whole heartedly with all the above . . . . . but what about her chicken and waffles?
  7. just watchin' Later with Jools Holland, pleasure to see the wonderful Gladys Knight looking so well and performing so great. Something of the show's description on t'web made me smile tho: "Legendary 'Empress of Soul' Gladys Knight, whose career spans 50 years and has taken in stints at Motown, Buddah, an array of Grammy Awards and owning a chain of chicken and waffle restaurants, is on the show to perform a number or two from her stellar back catalogue." Anyone been in one of her chicken and waffle restaurants?
  8. Could use some scaffold inside, that pile of Val Doonican albums defies gravity
  9. That does it Ted I'm in there when the smoke clears, lookin' for 'em. I tell you the whole building above Rob's is gutted, as we would've been had it been Rob's. See you soon mate.
  10. Was idling around Nottingham today and thought I'd pop into Rob's record shop up Hurts Yard to risk having a pile of 45s bury me. What a narrow escape he's had. Libertys night club that backs onto his was burnt out last week, didn't realise how close to Robs this place was. Very close thing for a shop that should be a national treasure. Hope all's well Rob and you can re-open soon. Might give you time to have a bit of sort out

That seems to make sense to me. I think (don't mind if i's just me) we confuse the issue by using OVO as shorthand for "credible for a northern soul dj/record monkey with a conscience to play at an event that has any respect for the scene and its history". If I play anywhere (very small time record monkey me) I don't knowingly play bootlegs/fakes. It matters very much to me that the record on the decks, whether mine or not, have some level of authenticity, the greater the authenticity (usually but not always the rarer) the more respect I have. Now, I know that's been discussed to hell and back on here but I think it's on thread. As an example, I have a Stemmons Express on Wand, I'll happily have that in my box somtimes to play, if another person has it on Karma I'd prefer for them to have the option to play it on that label. There's a hierarchy of desirability in my head about authenticity and rarity. Many auhtentic second label issues I would class as OVO by shorthand but it becomes fairly personal and arbitrary. In short, for me, OVO can be taken as embracing the spirit of rare records and their importance to the scene and those who enjoy it.
  12. Apologies if it's in there, at work feeling a little blury and delicate today, seems too obvious...........................Blackpool Mecca, Not forgetting Sherwood Rooms at The Swan, Mansfield Edit - Sorry all pages were not coming up first time i looked, must be there somewhere.

    PM'd you
  14. [ Don't worry though fellers - the Attic lads are renowned for their relaxed, open-minded, touchy-feely deck management.

Whatever we think it will be....... it will probabaly be different to that. Like lots on here, NS is at the core of me but I've a varied taste for music. I've been going to festivals for a long, long time. At V fetsival (Stafford) and Leeds this summer (?) with my daughter. My son was at Leeds but as he's 19 only saw him once and that was him pretending not to be hammered. The point of my post is this: I'm finding a lot of "mainstream" music very dull at the moment. I usually enjoy the smaller tents at festivals to see who's coming through, not this year (Kid Brittain were ok). Left me with a thought that in a deprived time (ok, obviously my taste and opinion) for anything new and exciting, northern soul in all its guises could be quite attractive for a new generation. I'm sure it was the pop crap of the early 70s that ended with punk but propelled me into northern. (of course there are some exceptions to that generalisation). Just an opinion.

Not a big record but springs to mind for this topic - Johnny Wyatt on Challenge, A side usually listed as Hang Up The Phone on lists, check out the flip, Any Kind Of Love. Powerful big vocal that builds to a peak, old style pounder.
  17. Up until the age of about 19 or 20, I still had a really bad speach stammer. By the time I'd asked a DJ for anything dawn had broken and in some cases the record had been bootlegged!
  18. Very best wishes to you both. Didn't think lookbacks was an appropriate place for this, great celebration last night. It's a tribute to you both the number of really good people from "the scene" who turned up to help celebrate. Lots of great tunes, Steve Lydon is now a convert to deep grinding R&B. Kev H managed to get some fresh air but had to go by himself, sure we can keep that going for another 20 year. We did think that The Attic lads may have been the live music when we arrived upstairs and saw the banjo's on stage, but lucky for you there were actually some musicians in the place. Two great people, wishing you all the happiness for each other together, Dean
  19. Thanks for information Dave. Still looking if anyone has further information. Dean
  20. Not expecting a flood of replies, a bit specific this one. Is there a white A / B side promo of S35046 Jimmy Ruffin - Don't Let Him Take Your Love From Me / Lonely Lonlely Man Am I, on SOUL? Would post in Wants but would like to know if there is one first! Thanks in anticipation (which always looks silly when there's no replies), Dean

just heard on radio news and came on here to check, her website had no mention. seems to be the time of our lives that we are in the middle of losing those artists that we hold in such etseem. Going to go and play a few and try to smile for her memory. x
  23. 1.45 seems to be a recurring time! Not sure if it's the shortest in my boxes but 'The Halos - Do I' (1.45 on label) always hit me as very brief. At a time when my feet could could time with my mind I didn't mind its brevity, about 45 seconds too long for my knees now.

Scanning through this, I don't suppose the gent/lady who cut those patches off my bag as it lay amongst a pile on the stage at Wigan would like to return them now? Can't recall the date. One I miss, sad as that is, was a local one, I think promoted by Phil Kingswood, a square patch with an oak tree centre design, think it was Sherwood Soul Club. Still got a few in a frame with old fliers etc.
  25. Hi Rob, played this to Steve and Kev a couple of months back, primarily to point out the horns, are they really sampled or just very similar?
