  1. Yes Winnie they do have the scope, but I think some local type do's are playing more diverse and interesting tunes,Just my opinion,I think the chaps at Stoke were playing it a bit too safe, but as I said some of em loved it,is it just me?????...dunno Bazza
  2. well I went to stoke Nighter, and apart from Sean chapman and Niel Jones who both did a cracking set,the others were in my opinion a little bland,I know some of the folk there thought it was a cracking night, not for me tho' I know when I go to my localish do's with a good mix of tunes ,I never have a bad night are Nighters loosing there way a bit ??????? Give me my local do's anyday Bazza
  3. In the early days of the scene late 60s,bluebeat and ska, were played alongside soul. Northern soul had not at that time been defined as a genre, still part of this scene tho' or was.I don't think it should forgotten Bazza

  7. From a punters point of view,as long as a tune is not hammered ,im happy,if its rarely played ,Im happy,if I have never heard it before (as long as it floats my boat )Im happy......having said that there are certain hammered tunes I still like to hear out Magestics-I love her so much, hammered to death .....but I still love to hear it out But I am easy to please ,my main concern when Im out, is that I enjoy myself,I will always make the best of it rather than moan about it Not being a collector, I would not know the difference between a rare tune or a rarlely played tune, makes no difference to me Bazza

My personal preferances crept in to this bit,Im a fan of R&B,but also R&B type tunes did play a big part in it ,at the start of it all I didnt mean modern for the youngsters or to water it down,it is like it or not ,part of todays scene Bazza

lots of good points Stevie, good post my opinion is this, the scene used to be all about change, new sounds and styles,I dont mean as in modern day new,I mean finding the old tunes that had not been played traditional soul nights,I dont think there was such i thing ,because as I said ,it was constantly changing,it was what made the scene interesting and exciting, you never knew what you were goint to hear,to the promoters and DJs it was important to find the unusal and different tunes ,thats what made the scene great, I left the scene around the late 70s,family and so on,on returning to the scene ,I was surprised to find it had hardly changed from then,it has become a little stagnant in places,it is time for some changes. Tradition and nostalgia, these are the ideas holding back the scene,I am as guilty as next in this tho' the scene used to be about rare 'ish underplayed unusual Soul music and R&B Dance tunes,it will live on,but it has got to change if you have 20 somethings to 60 somethings in the same room listening/dancing to the same tunes ,the tunes have got to be across the board ,uptempo ,mid tempo.R&B,and modern just my opinion of course Bazza
  16. Blimey Di,this is horrible, typical lavine type knock together, complete with the usual sampled drum roll Bazza

I can only comment on the changes I have seen over the years in the late 60s soul ,R&B ,Ska and Reggae were all being played very early 70s Ska and reggae disapeared....one change early 70s Soul and R&B were played and what I would call R&B/soul , tunes that were both a sort of soul and R&B mix, another change middle 70s R&B lost ground to the more modern sound , another change 80s and 90s ,I cant comment on I feel now, it is in the middle of another change. but through the years Soul has always been at the heart of it just a rough view of the changes I have seen over the years Bazza

I think the scene has got to change,to stay alive it ,has to bring in new blood ,that is obvious,I personaly have no problem with "youngsters" ,if they are enjoying it and not just taking the piss, getting them in is the hard part, for instance,my niece was at a loose end one saturday,so me and the wife sugested she come with us to a do',smile on her face she said "ohh dont realy fancy an old peoples disco",she did come and she was truly amazed at it all, the music the dancing the friendly attitude of em,she loved it. I think to keep it alive ,you have got to play a good cross section of all sorts, Northern fast and mid tempo R&B modern the lot when I think about it ,im 52 so to me the scene already has a lot of Kids ,in their 30s and 40s the snobbery as got to go,that will kill it completley another 10 years, dunno,I will be 62,will i still be attending (if im still alive) its a good question and I cant answer it,in fact should I still attend, will I my self add to its demize cos Im just too bloody old, it would be asking alot to have 20 somethings to 60 somethings in the same room enjoying the same tunes.
