The Record Producers - Holland / Dozier / Holland
I caught the programme when it was broadcast on Radio 2. Very interesting, with indepth analysis of their recording techniques and everything. One gets to hear alternative takes (never released) of some of the classic tracks. Cheers Melismo

Patrice Rushen
Patrice Rushen is one of the most sampled artists in black music. No wonder, she laid down some smooth and nice grooves back in the day, always working with the creme de la creme of studio musicians.

Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
Great call. By the way, I´ve always thought that Randy Brown was a member of the Newcomers. That´s what is says in all reference books and album liner notes, but Randy Brown himself, when visiting the UK, said that he never was a member of that group! Anyone who can shed some light on the matter? Melismo

Great Titles In Soul Music
One of the best non-soul song titles must be "If I Say You Have A Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me".

Great Titles In Soul Music
Yes, of course. That´s the one. They´ve cut some great music, although the group name - Train Robbers - doesn´t sound very `soulful´ to me. But neither does Skull Snaps!!! Cheers Steve Melismo

Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
I learnt recently that when Lew Kirton visited the UK once, he had no recollection of ever recording a song called "Heaven In The Afternoon", so his fans had to teach him the song so that he could perform it. Interesting. Also, Ashford & Simpson, when visiting the UK, proved unaware of some of the `hit versions´ other artists have done of their songs. I forgot, there was something I was supposed to do now.....?!?!?!.... Ok, now I remember, I was supposed to press the "add reply" button

Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
Ooops! Deserves a repeat though - a very uplifting song with a positive message. Overplayed - but for a reason, its quality... Cheers Paul Melismo

Great Titles In Soul Music
Wasn´t there a group called Bank Robbers that cut a track called "Tricky Dick". A wonderful soul tune despite the awkward group name and song title. Otherwise I´d say that some of the wittiest lyrics and song titles are to be found in country music, but that´s a different story (and forum) LOL....

Your Favourite Modern Soul Choons ?
A list of some of the most essential modern soul classics Mainly tracks from the 70´s and 80´s. For most Soul-Source members these tracks are overplayed and all too obvious, but for anyone who wants to catch up with some of the best of modern soul this may be a pretty apt start: Glenn Jones - I Am Somebody Ozone - Our Hearts Will Always Shine Beloyd - Get Into Your Life Flowers - For Real Whatnauts - Help Is On The Way Al Johnson - I´ve Got My Second Wind Channel 3 - The Sweetest Thing (This Side Of Heaven) Lew Kirton - Heaven In The Afternoon Active Force - Give Me Your Love Lonnie Hill - Galveston Bay The Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt Atlantic Starr - When Love Calls Controllers - Stay Norman Connors - She´s Gone Michael Wycoff - Looking Up To You Glenn Jones - I Am Somebody Alfonzo Surrett - Gimme Your Love Windy City - Fool Or Your Man Natural High - Trust In Me Lowrell - Mellow Mellow Right On Leo´s Sunship - Give Me The Sunshine High Fashion - Feelin´ Lucky Lately Phyllis Hyman - You Know How To Love Me Futures - Ain´t Got Time Fa Nuthin´ Garfield Fleming - Don´t Send Me Away Fat Larry´s Band - Act Like You Know Tyrone Davis - In The Mood Randy Brown - The Next Best Thing To Being There Breakwater - Say You Love Me Girl Arnold Blair - Trying To Get Next To You Archie Bell & The Drells - Don´t Let Love Get You Down Coke Escovedo - Why Can´t We Be Lovers Otis & Shugg - Journey Kindred - As Of Yet Frank McComb - Golden Lady Lalah Hahtaway - Better And Better O.T. Sykes - My First Love Al Mason - Good Lovin´ Jay Player - Love Is The Answer Those are some of tracks I´d play for a person that I want to introduce to modern soul, by playing some classics. Some of them are quite expensive, but can be obtained on, dare I say, Modern Soul compilation albums However, you may find some of those rarer items on E-bay or Manship. Others, like Atlantic Star, Controllers etc. are as cheap as chips. Best, Melismo

80's Soul
Been trying to listen to the clips posted in this thread. I click the icon, the player appears, but the song never starts playing. When I press play, a circle goes round and round and round, but the clip doesn´t play. I´ve tried different options, but nothing seems to work. Probably just me, or...?

Linda Jones B-side
Linda Jones has one of soul music´s most powerful voices IMO. Sadly she is no longer with us, but her daughter is now in the music business, she is part of a duo that has had a few releases out.

Linda Jones B-side

Linda Jones B-side
Just a quick question, too lazy to check it out myself: What´s the b-side of Linda Jones "Hypnotized"? Thanks in advance Melismo

New And Contemporary Soul
The CD by Onyx1 is most definitely one the strongest soul sets this year. You can purchase it from www.cdbaby.com and other places. The group has been around for a long time, first recorded as Onyx, but now as they make their grand comeback they have to call themselves Onyx1, to avoid confusion with brutal hip-hop act Onyx! I think a couple of members of Onyx1 used to be in vocal group Natural Four (ABC, Curtom) back in the day. However, there are also many other nice soul releases out, many of which have already been mentioned on this forum - and in this thread. Melismo

Jon Lucien
Hard to believe that he´s gone. Today will be a Jon Lucien day. Will pull out of some of my favourites from the man. R.I.P.

The Real Barbara Mcnair
This is not a rare album, shouldn´t be too expensive. I´ve seen it many times, and it´s been relatively cheap. It is a very nice album though from the lady who passed not very long ago. Best, Melismo

Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girl
"Stand By Me" may not be in need of a revival. It has already been revived a number of times and is so well-established. Sampling has done more for more obscure artists like Tom Brock that all of a sudden became sought after by hip-hop heads. Melismo

Ron Miller R.i.p
That same question was asked on another forum as well, and noone was able to tell, and to be honest I do not know either. The Ron Miller in this thread did venture into the `type of music´ that Crown Heights did, he did some soul, some disco, some funk, but I have found no clear evidence that he´s the same guy who worked with Crown Heights Affair and Raw Silk. Maybe someone else on here knows more? After having worked for Motown Ron Miller mainly focused on composing songs for musicals. Best Melismo

Wmot Records
Fredrik, thanks for posting the Breeze track - lovely little tune. The one I was thinking of originally was BREEZE, JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME on Silver Dollar from 1980. Nice cheapie 7" don´t you think? If you have it, can you provide an mp3 of that one too, please? Best Melismo

Is This The Rarest Spinners Track
"I´ve Got To Make It On My Own" is the closing track (#8) on the Spinners´ 3rd Atlantic album New And Improved. This is of course an original album, not an improved version of older material. The album was released in December of 1974, thus many people wrongly believe that is was out in 1975, you can spot this error on some well-respected soul sites on the Internet. As far as I know "Living A Little, Laughing A Little" was the first single pulled from the album, although radio may have featured the Dionne Warwick duet "Then Came You" prior to that. In 1995 the album was released in CD format by Rhino, in their Atlantic/Atco remasters series. I know that CD is not a preferred format for people who love to collect 45s but the CD does contain a leaflet of some 6 pages of info on the group and the recording of the album, and that may be of interest to some. Wmot Records
I´ve heard another nice track (a cheapie 7") by a group called Breeze. Can it be the same group, meaning did this group do more than the 7" mentioned, or am I probably thinking of a completely different act?

Ron Miller R.i.p
Nice to see more than one person paying homage to the man. /index.php?showtopic=52880 Cheers Melismo

Songwriter Ron Miller Dies
/index.php?showtopic=52826 True it´s sad news, but still a positive thing that many people (more than one person) show their respect and pay homage to the man. Cheers!
