this is very true. Soul records can only be either good or bad examples of there particular genre. some have the magic others don't.
  2. I heard that before but never managed to get it confirmed. Does Johnny McCall sing lead on the 4 shades track or is he a backing singer ?
  3. yep, must be this one. Just listening now on youtube. fire island for me just means the one I listed (anthem in its day for me) but don't think its got any connection to LH.
  4. "there but for the grace of god" ?????????
  5. good stuff. Happy to have my doubts proved wrong. my copy is in the post looking forward to listening to the vinyl instead of an mp3 on internet.

is it young divines ? I like that one...
  7. thats what I thought. Didn't sound quite right.
  8. I had a listen to it last night and can't decide..... did see a discopgraphy on the net saying its him but you can't believe all you read. did he have a son who may have sang on this ?
  9. are you certain its Ralph ?
  10. I think he may have.... but saying that when I went to my first nighter in about 3 years a couple of months ago I didn't know too many. There were plenty of new sounds mixed in with the stuff I knoiw and like.
  11. Thats how I read it. but do the customers attending rare soul nights not want to hear at least a selection out of a given number of records ? a lot of the top DJs must have records that people associate with them and as a result they will get played. some of these records may have taken a lot of finding in the first place so will get a good spell of time on the tuntables.
  12. veron changed hands for a lot of money in football transfers but was pretty rubbish at British clubs. just a bit off topic.....
  13. are these shows available to download ? without having to mess about with one of those bits of recording software....
  14. I can see the logic here. I wouldn't say you need to have had the big ticket records though just heard them lots and lots over a number of years so when you spend you want something different. Not something you know inside out.
  15. its a slippery slope but sounds like you've got the bug good and proper now. Its frightening how easy it is to refer to a 75-100 record as cheap and not even think it remotely strange to spending that sort of money. I think there's a few of us now who came over from the house music era.
  16. i'm having a mainstream phase just now. example being Bar-Kays "Summer of our love" and this... which is sensational. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGAvP_c9AqQ things like tomangoes are always going to sound. They don't reach cult status for nothing. you've got pretty mixed taste which is a good thing in my book.
  17. you'll have to work on the sales pitch a bit. just out of interest what tracks have you heard so far on the northern scene that you have realy liked ? this is not a test i'm just curious..... I won 't be giving you marks out of 10
  18. just played this and decided its worth a mention.. Billy Jackson TCB - Brunswick should be a cheapie I think ? a very good dancer. another one of the 45s I baught for the deep side and got a pleasent suprise when I flipped it over.
  19. if it was only the "normal" people that had children then the world would be a better place....
  20. it certainly is agree totally. the more you can learn the more chance of finding good 45s cheap. i've been "into" soul for prehaps 8-9 years now and I don't think you ever stop hearing new records.
  21. a touch more expensive than the admirations as well. but so much better. "and if you think i'd beg you baby......" quality.
  22. good thread. from a purely financial point of view... If you knew for a fact you can sell a 45 for a grand then would you bat an eyelid a spending 600 or so on it ? its just being confident you can make the sale or having to money to go for it. I personally don't have that kind of money to tie up and apart from the odd exception just look to build my colection as cheap as possible. Spares have to be realy cheap to get me interested. My spending has gone down dramitically but there have been times in the past where all my dispoable income has gone on 45s for a good few months. I can't believe you suggested there are drug dealers on the northern soul scene its the cleanest living bunch of people i've ever met.
  23. or right group wrong titile ? "you better think again"
  24. I paid $7 for my duff thurmond but it has sold for up to about $90 on ebay. very good record.
