  1. Same answer from me! I'm forgetting that coach journeys totally screw up my back, so it's a no from me. (Private jet would be nice.) - Kev.
  2. Chapter 5 (and yes I do mean it!) Oh, and Lenny Gamble
  3. Yeah, I wonder why that is? Let's all get back in our pigeon holes where we're comfortable, and call one another names - it's easier.
  4. Like Chalky says, it's often through ignorance. It's a misconception of elitism maybe - which I find odd because there's plenty in the Top 500 that are pretty rare, and underplayed too nowadays. Perhaps the fact that we do tend to label events as Rare or Oldies etc, contributes to the misconception. Not to long ago I played at an established "Oldies" venue. I played tunes that I love and that I thought would go down well. I was both pleased and surprised when the promoter later said to me "I really enjoyed your set - it does them good to hear something different". Well, I didn't think that they were too different - maybe I play them too much at home and forget that they're not played everywhere. It did make me think though that maybe other guest dj's read the "Oldies" label and think that they have to strictly conform and limit themselves. Obviously not the case, and perhaps a lot of dj's are guilty of adhering to preconceived boundarys when they could be breaking them down.
  5. Russ, I don't recall the term Rare Soul being used prior to the coining of the phrase "Northern Soul". Maybe it depends where you were geographically though. In the late '60s when I began to frequent venues in the Northants area that played rarer and more unusual stuff I'm sure it was just refered to as "Soul", or maybe "Old Soul". My cousin had frequented the same venues a couple of years previously. When she found out I was going regularly she said " Oh, you like R'n'B then?". So, within a few years it had gone from R'n'B to (old) Soul to Northern Soul. Same music, different label. The trouble with pigeon holing is the preconception and misconception that goes with it, and I won't go into the derogatory comments that come flying from people who, mistakenly believe that they are in a different arena. I don't believe that they are. It's one big soul music scene, with variations, and if some stopped being so insular and defensive of what they percieve to be their speciality, they might find that the other pigeon holes aren't really so different. I hope this makes sense - I know what I mean.
  6. I'm with you and Dave on this one. No sale price is particularly frustrating when you see another for sale asking for "offers", and you do a quick search to find what a reasonable offer might be. That usually means I avoid such sales rather than seriously over or under estimating and making a complete pillock of myself.
  7. Unmitigated rubbish!? Compared to what? ...............I'll get my coat
  8. I cried laughing!
  9. There are definately 2 versions Kev. One with a younger sounding Gene Woodbury (to my ears anyway). Also the version that isn't on t'other side of "Ever Again", is missing that all important break in the middle. Been a while since I've played either version and I can't drag my boxes out at the moment to verify anything further, including the release numbers.
  10. Not the same one then Dave. The one I was thinking of was definately in Berwick St - walk up porn alley, hit the market, and it was a few shops up on the left.
  11. That was about the time I discovered Berwick St. Was this stall linked to one of the shops? It was one of the shops, at the market end of Berwick St where this geezer with a little black book full of wants (Dave Godin) pulled a few tunes out of the boxes and suggested I buy 'em.
  12. Well Gomez doesn't keep making this arguement - it's his first post on this site! Well done to him for losing his cherry on a soul thread rather than tip-toeing around on Freebasing:hatsoff2:. - Kev.
  13. You're right Nige......so lets turn this into something positive.......... Until the end of last year I was a resident dj at Stolen Hours in Ramsgate. We went through a few changes of venues for a variety of reasons until finally setting up in the cellar bar of the Churchill Tavern, Ramsgate. At the last one I attended Pam and I arrived first so that we could order some food in the upstairs eatery as we live 45 miles away and didn't have time before setting off. We were sat at a table looking at the menu when someone shouted from the bar " I hope you're not wanting food - the power is off downstairs so there's no kitchen!" This was an hour before we were due to be up and running! To cut a long story short, Karen, the Churchill Taverns' landlady, ended up phoning around and found us an alternative venue nearby. Not only that, she took us there initially, re-directed all our punters, and then even turned up herself to help out behind the bar as they weren't geared up for our numbers. We were up and running at the new venue just an hour later than advertised. What a top lady! Why can't all venue managers have this attitude? - Kev P.S. What's that old nonce doing in the kiddies play area in Mace's post, and are they boxing gloves or blisters?
  14. At last a post that confirms my thoughts of Kent as a soul wilderness! I remember in '72 taking vinyl along to the Wig & Gown in Maidstone - J J Barnes, Mel Wynn, Originals, that sort of stuff for the dj to play. Never really caught on though. Just me and a few other exiled squaddies into it. Also looked for a venue more recently and Maidstone's old Comedy Club was suggested but when I got there it was being ripped apart and is now an Indian restaurant. Keith, if you know of any "notable exceptions" other than Kent Soul Club at Rochester, pass the details my way mate. - Kev
  15. Pete, in all honesty your questions and "givens" are exactly what has been debated throughout the thread. ......with some more interesting sidelines and informative bits thrown in for for good measure. - Kev.
  16. Wil the Rare room be on?
  17. Valid points, and I was obviously wrong to presume that any hefty bidder would know what a carver was. Perhaps not wrong to presume that that anyone with sense might be prompted to ASK the seller for clarification though Regarding the label, the following is stated in the sales blurb: VG++ condition (some glue residue on the dead wax from the test press cover up label, plays EX+) .....which some have either not noticed, or not understood. Even so, I just don't think there is any INTENT to confuse or deceive whatsover. There's just so much in the sales blurb that needn't have been there otherwise.
  18. Yes, recording anyones set is despicable, and going on to produce a carver from the recording is too. But....that's a pretty big brush you're tarring "the rest of the London soulies" with Pete. I'm sure you mean "some other London soulies" - Kev.
  19. I'll say it again - I've no problem with anyone that lists a sale honestly. These things exist so we might as well face it, they're going to be bought and sold. I just think anger and dismay is better directed at the many sellers who intentionally set out to deceive or catch the unwary - many with numerous sales and on a regular basis, and with Ebay seemingly ignoring the reporting of such sellers by myself and others on here. - Kev.
  20. That's fair enough. But out of curiosity as I leapt to defend the sales post - if you'd been inclined to bid on this would the description as a carver have dettered you, or at least prompted you to ask the seller what he mean't by this? Or would you have bid away regardless? Just curious. - Kev.
  21. That's right Malc, under his real name, and as a wedding singer - but I don't recall him actually singing. If I remember correctly, his appearance in The Sopranos assisted Ady Croasdell in finally tracking him down and luring him to Cleethorpes (I think) . A fascinating , but lengthy, interview which reveals all of this is on Refosoul (The Dean Parrish Story). I love the bit where he reminisces of his first stage appearance at a Northern gig........"Oh my God, they're all white!..........and they must have been thinking - Oh my God he's white!" - Kev.
  22. I'll second that. Nice post....Thanks!
  23. And what's more his sales list has led directly to Bradford going to the top of my "must do" venues. I thought Jeez if these are what he's selling what's he playing ffs! Just got to get myself fit enough to travel and I'll be up there. - Kev.
  24. No, but if anyone is spending 3 figures on a piece of vinyl i think they probably would. The seller also states "all original first issues unless noted" - which it clearly is. If someone doesn't know then there is always the oportunity to ASK before bidding. I don't have a problem with this personally, unlike some of the shyster sales that are intended to deceive with their bootlegs - now they really piss me off!
  25. But to be fair - there is a scan, it's described as a carver, and it was put on at 99p start. What more do you want?
