What Is Northern Soul?
Northernsoul, the term Northernsoul became paradoxical as soon as it was coined. Every one and his dog knows the story of how it was named and I think that reasoning still remains true to this day. The first paradox is that the term was coined to explain the difference between what was being danced to in the North in comparison to the slower tempo South, yet the scene does not consist wholly of 100mph stompers. Northern Soul is beat, pure and simple. Another paradox, there are loads of Northernsoul tracks that do not comply to the Motownesque template. My definition is as follows, and it is the only definition, if it gets played at a Northernsoul venue, if it is danced to and accepted at a Northernsoul venue then it becomes Northernsoul full stop. To prove this point list all of the records that do not conform to the stereo typing Motown sound that is associated by the casual observer. Dolly Patron, Busy signal, purple haze johnny jones & the king casuals, Mike Pedicin - Burnt toast and black coffee and Patrick Hernandez - Born To Be Alive Just a few for ya, as Northernsoul as talc, baggy pants, bag of wiz, bag of shite, bag of marbles Oh and don't forget this one..................... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtPBBngxYG0 Thats for you :-)

What Makes A Good Record - The Dancers Or The Song
Great thread! Great question! I have to stereotype for a while so please forgive me............... When I go to an allnighter I am very aware that there are two very different creatures who are in attendance, two species who co exist in partnership that often looks like oil and water. I am referring to the record collectors and the dancers. I won't name the venue where I saw this typify but the venue had a balcony overlooking the dance floor and the balcony offered itself as not just a record bar but as a place where people could congregate. There looked as if there was a definite parting for those who were there to worship our Soul God on the dance floor and those who made up the priesthood of the little black discs. The dancers seam to settle them selves into a rudimentary pecking order and the dance begins while upstairs the priests jostle for acceptance amongst the higher orders. We also see the chosen ones who hold court behind the safety of their aluminum containers offering knowing nods of approval to the lower priest's discs and knowing smiles to those who have chosen wisely. When the priests offer up their chosen disc to the dancers there is always a moment where the drums could stop, the moment Joe is thrown into the volcano! It is at this precise moment when this question is answered only by the dancers, and if the priest gets it right and we dance then every one is happy with the sacrifice. "What in your opinion" makes a good Northern Soul Record? Is it the actual song itself? OR Is it the Dancers that interpret the music that makes the Record Northern Soul Both.................... When Joe gets thrown into the volcano it is a wonderfull thing!

Looks great!- Oldies V Newies V Old Newies V New Oldies
Arn't you getting mixed up with "Crevice "?- Oldies V Newies V Old Newies V New Oldies
Newies, I assume you don't mean Modern? I can start with some seventies "Newies", most of them will have bled into the main rooms and into the Psyche of most oldies fans who may not even realise their origins. This may well be classed as cross over track? True Image - I'm not over you yet Brilliant tempo, excellent production and crisp disco Pep Brown - I am the one who needs you Nowt wrong with this little badger! Wilson Williams - I like being in love with you Crazy mega record that blows the cob webs of any of the tired dancers Charles Drain - Is this real love Honest this is just the seventies, there are buckets of brilliant records we hardly hear and contra to popular belief it is not because they are crap! It's because most people on the Northernsoul Scene need their fookin ears pulling through! I know absolutely nothing about our fantastic scene because I know we are just touching the tip of the ice berg, Northernsoul was never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever about listening to the main stream, we now have a mainstream and I aint fookin swimming in it!!!!!!!! I'll go to Stoke coz I love the carnival, I'll go to the smaller venues coz I want to hear that stuff that makes me go wow!- Oldies V Newies V Old Newies V New Oldies
Pete if you get bored at a nighter try asking the DJ for stupid stuff I asked one for The Lambrini the other night.- Is There Such A Thing As A Perfect Allnighter?
Is there such a thing as a perfect allnighter? So can we build an imaginary Allnighter? Northernsoul is a funny old game, what's right for some aint right for others but we do all have a common bond and that is a love of rare soul, yup some have stayed faithful, some seam to be in loveless marriages and other fling them selves about like floozies. If we were to build a "Super Allnighter", how would we do it? Could we do it and please every one without excluding any splinter groups? How many rooms would we need to have and could we have a main room? Would the venue have to be so big to accommodate all of the sub sections that it would never fill? If money was no option and we could pick any venue what would we go for? I think the easy answer would be Wigan Casino but I think this is the wrong answer. Yes there are those who pine for the lost days but aren't they really pining for their lost youth? Who would DJ? Is our scene so oil and water now days that each DJ can only play to a particular crowd? Surely every one started out with similar tastes and don't we all kind love Frank Wilson? So can we build an imaginary Allnighter?- Oldies V Newies V Old Newies V New Oldies
Dazdakin I'm glad you had a great night at Stoke so did I. If your musical journey begins at Wigan and ends in stoke then I can respect that, every one to their own. I kinda guess every one on this list started their own personal journey at venues like the Casino or similar? My journey started the same way as you but I am still riding this freedom moped baby and I do not know where it is gonna take me! I have no helmet on and I lost one of my socks a mile ago! Stoke is rammed, smiling faces every were and people having a great time dancing to great music, its kinda like a mobile Northernsoul museum, and I don't mean that in any derogatory way, but it is night of glorious nostalgia. The Northernsoul Scene, as you know, has progressed, you may not feel comfortable with most of the track and you may not like to dance to stuff you don't know but there is a healthy cadre of soul fans who attend the allnighters up and down the country eager to listen, dance and appreciate those who have dusted off, unearthed or taken a punt on some thing new or underplayed, of course there are certain tacks that don't work but honest mate there are enough allnighters with busy dance floors to show that Northernsoul is alive and very well thank you. Just so there are no hard feelings please enjoy this clip; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtPBBngxYG0- Old Footage Chesterfield & Rotherham
I never missed a Canklow, used to love watching visitors slip as the floor turned to a sheet of ice! We pass Canklow nearly every time we are on the way to a nighter, great memories.- Frank Wilson -"he Who Shall Not Be Named" On Ss
Karen and Rob Wigley, great post! I can totally empathize with how you guys feel! I have been an avid champion of Patrick Hernandez for years now and yes his name is never mentioned just like Frank Wilson. I still have my 1979 album by Patrick on Columbia and still play it to death even now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H12wNmn87KM- Renee Geyer - It Only Happens When I Look At You

I was not sure if I should add this topic here or members feed back? I joined this forum 06-February 07, I had know for some time of its existence but Soul Source had a rather stuffy reputation for train spotters and elitism so I was reluctant to join. Even now I'm not too sure why I joined but join I did, not with any adjender but I did take a deep breath and dove in. A few years later and I find my self totally addicted to Soul Source and it is now my first port of call to see what's on in Soul Events. The very best thing for me is the people that I have met due to this forum and there isn't an allnighter where I haven't met a fellow Soul Sourcer. Brilliant forum, certainly the best platform for our chosen life style. Thanks to all concerned.- Wigan Dance Competition Winners
I was the one wearing white socks, white shirt and shorts, "sorry", stomping next to me was Mick "Scotty" Scott from Doncaster, and I know Stuart from Oldham was the chap with "Soul" shaved into the back of his head.- Is It Acceptable To Do A Soul Night With Cd's
The layer cake, cracking film that was. I hadn't heard of that expression before watching the film. The Northernsoul Scene, if that what we are called, is multi layered and like it or not where you go, what you listen to and how it is played to you falls very easily into its own little layer of the cake. There is an argument to avoid here as to what layer is or should be at the top and there will be an argument as to what tastes the best and what gives the best quality. I for one have no problems with visiting an old friend who has just celebrated his 60th birthday in his local pub and the music was off an usb stick, no one paid to get in and no one traveled particularly far. In my glorious local area of South Yorkshire we have a plethora of soul nights some dia fookin bolical and some that are very good, I'm not too fussed at the CD thing here as long as the price I am being charged doesn't creep past say a fiver, I have lost larger amounts of change down the back of my settee. I do kinda like to go to Allnighter and spend an affordable amount of money getting there, getting in and driving for a few miles in my car. When I go to an allnighter the only CD I want to hear being played is the one that is announced with "This is only available on CD", the chances are that this will be a fantastic soul record that a well versed and well respected Northernsoul DJ will play staking his reputation on its acceptance, doesn't work all the time but some times it blows you away. If I ever went to an allnighter and they were playing CD's I would not go back, full stop. You do vote with your feet. I don't profess to be a Northernsoul Ninja, well I do when I'm pissed, and I don't do the baggy pant thing, well I do some times if the mood takes. I do like my music, I do like my dancing and I will be at Stoke on Saturday Night rubbing shoulders with friends who I have made over the last couple of decades, CD's nah, they are for divvies!- Reviewing The Rare Soul Bible, A Northern Soul
Reviewing the Rare Soul Bible, a Northern Soul Author: Dave Rimmer From the offset this book is confusing? It is cleverly written as a reference book of sorts with snippets of biographies and record lists set amongst a some times tragic love story that turns into an almost lurid sex book that neither is necessary or acceptable even in this age of sexually freedom we apparently live in. After reading the book I scratched my head thinking I had read something like this before, there are faint echoes of Orpheus in the Underworld and a sub plot hinting of a mans struggle with his sexuality, this is no better seen in Dave's artist profiles. This is not a romantic fiction although there are definite nods towards Jane Austen and I did wonder if Dave is in fact the main character and this is semi autobiographic? Dave's plot, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. How many Northernsoul women is Mr Rimmer trying to anger? Will I read this book again? Well I would but I have colored some of the pages in, Should you buy the book, oh yes! If not just for the sex scenes on pages 103 - 106.- Is It Acceptable To Do A Soul Night With Cd's
