Ovo Definition
I've always thought the point was whether it was scheduled for release. In that case the UK 60's labels are authentic as they were legitimate UK releases. If something is issued due to popular demand ie James Fountain on Cream that is a reissue. A good example is US Prelude. Some of the tracks were released on UK Epic as scheduled releases. When they became popular some were reissued on Unidisc or whatever. They again are reissues and not OVO (By the way what about OSO for styrene). Therefore Grapevine is a reissue label and not UK first releases. Some DJs and collectors do move the goalposts sometimes but that is for their, and promoters consciences. Richard

Are Records Sold On This Site More Expensive Than Average?
Exactly. How many records have actually sold at this mythical book price I hate it when I see Blah, blah by the blah blahs £300 (Books at 500) If it books at 500 and the seller thinks that's a fair price, sell it for 500 pounds FFS

One other thing that does go on, is that people will buy records at the going rate and then mark them up, just for the sake off getting a list out. Oh and please stop the "books at" nonsense. It's a total irrelevance.

The grading issue is a big problem. That is something you have to trust the seller on 100% and it is what they should base their reputation on. It's alright saying you can complain after but then there's always the feeling of mistrust and the possible accusation of, " That's not the copy I sent you". As for pricing there are various reasons for this. The seller may not be bothered if they sell the tune so will ask a high price. They could also just be taking a punt but it's their decision, no one is forcing anyone to pay the asking price. I must admit though, it is offputting when I see a list that is top heavy throughout. There's nothing to stop anyone putting in an offer on things, but some sellers do seem to take offence at this. Why I don't know, it has happened to me. Buyers just need to do their homework, especially on newish soul and house tracks. The thing that does annoy me, mostly on modern records and especially 12"s is, that often, it is not stated whether they are UK or US releases. Many of these had dual UK/US release often on the same label, but obviously there can be a price differential between the two and more desireability for the US release. (For me anyway)

May 09 Cd Swap. ......full Up.......full Up.......full Up
Right After much headscratching and soulsearching it's done (in fact I had so much fun doing it I've got the next one ready too) Apologies to all for the delay but I've been off the northern scene for nearly 20 years and it's been a bit daunting. It may not be to everyones taste but it has all the stuff I currently like on it. I will be away for the weekend so will burn and post beginning of next week. Once again I am sorry for the delay (beginners nerves) All the best Richard

12" Holy Grails
I've seen both versions but never heard the Arnie Love. I just assumed (wrongly obviously) that they were different releases of the same record. There is another great Arnie Love record the name of which escapes me (also on tap I believe) As to who pays a lot for Independent 12"s? Well quite a few people it would seem. I've recently seen lots of 12"s go for what I would consider much more (up to twice in some cases) than their "book price". There is also a "healthy" (if that's the right word) market in "reissues" or bootlegs, some very convincing especially if buying from ebay, so beware. Threads like this make me realise how insular the rare soul scene can be and once you think you've got a bit of knowledge behind you, bang a load more different music appears. I love it Richard

Bradford Modern Room 91-jesus It Was Hot
Ali Always nice to see you at Southport Adrian. I saw him at a soul night in Doncaster about 7 years ago. An unsung hero. The room at the top of the stairs, the best cup of tea at 5 in the morning that money could buy. Unfortunately I believe Steve's mother is no longer with us. Always knew Johnny as 'Johnny from Wigan'. I may have his surname spelt incorrectly. I apologise if I have.. Jill. Still banging on to Barry about On Hubert Street. one day!. The Queens Hall is now a Flares night club, or it was last time I was in Bradford. Crikey 5 yrs ago. I'll dig out the pics of it. Still remember being in there when Steve announced that David Ruffin had died and then played "Walk away from love" Memories eh. Phil, Just spoke to Barry, He sends his love. Richard

Bradford Modern Room 91-jesus It Was Hot
Was a Bradford regular between 89 and the end in 92 I believe Barry and Dave ran downstairs between early 91 and Jan 92. I thought it finished in Nov 91 but remember going after Christmas that year. Michael Watford - Holding On and a big Disco re edit thing on Lifeforce (I believe) being the big tunes of the time. ( I'll have a look for it later) Funny how your memory plays tricks on you. I remember it going fortnightly from monthly but can't remember when. I do know that in the first few weeks everybody (myself included) hated what was going on downstairs, but soon grew to love it, and it was indeed a life changing experience. I still see Barry regularly and Dave occasionally. Used to see Johnny Kerslake at Southport, but not for a while. Always bump into Geordie Bri and Alison there too. Saw Steve Croft in Chesterfield market a couple of years ago. the man was (is) a genius. Also used to love the playlists, usually featuring Phil on the front page. Chucked mine away years ago, and always regretted. Great days and always worth the trip up from London. Happy memories Richard

12" Holy Grails
Not really It's not worth a great deal on Tabu to be honest, about 20 quid 12"s and 7"s are completely different markets There are some "holy grail" 12"s that are very common on 7": Brainstorm - We're on our way home, and Norman Connors - Once I've been there, are two. The Mark IV is a different mix to the 7" 12"s sound, sonically, much better than 7"s (and LP tracks), which is why they are generally more sought after from a DJ perspective. The Jackie Stoudemire is a great track BTW and has been "reissued" recently. I believe most of the TAP stuff goes for money. Quite a few 7"s have been "reissued" as 12"s, and I can't vouch for their authenticity, most noteably, The Gifted Four on Ham Sem, Family of Eve on Full Sail and recently the great Midnight Express on Tri Fire. I posted a while ago about a 12" release of SPG - loveland. Does any one have any info about this? I love 12"s Richard

Best Dance Floor @ Northern Soul Venue ?
Bradford Queens Hall Upstairs the floor had a life of its own when Steve, Danny etc played 70s (and that echo) Downstairs the floor didn't matter, the music (both in Sam/Arthur days and when Barry/Dave took over) was sublime.
-
Spg Loveland
It's a very slightly different mix, but not in the Mark IV way. It's also dated 1983 which is a year earlier than the 7". I'm sure if it had been reissued or booted someone would have heard about it. Ill try to post a soundfile later. Richard
