Hi Phil Not necessarily. The music in the main room as has been said by likes of Mark freeman and Dean a great mix and in no way an oldies cheesefest. I know for a fact that Ginger Taylor loved playing in it as he was really able to push the boundaries to a very appreciable crowd. The same goes for the majority of the DJ's. Because of this and has been maybe touched on by some, a lot of folk stayed in Main room. Hope that explains it Phil. Mike

I agree, at the last Riverside the crowd were really up for the stuff Des was playing and increasingly over the past year or so are developing a taste and willingness for the lesser/uptempo tunes. In fact a growing proportion are being more choosy in the venues they now go to. I did a short set in Room 2 and quiet a few of the Riverside faithful were there. At the end of my set I was asked why I did not play more of that stuff at Riverside. The tin it states its an across the board venue but we moving towards the Newie/uptempo stuff.

The one before was packed and this one suffered largely because of other events on the same night. Because the main room is not an 'Oldies' Room in any sense, as has been commented on this thread, a lot of people stayed in there I suspect. Thats going back to Dave Thorley's second Paragragh on the opening of this thread.

But why penalise the Nighter people because you are worried about the clubbers coming in pissed up. As I mentioned in a previous posting "Don't let them into the venue". Management have the right to refuse entry.

As a promoter of a recent Allnighter we would not allow anyone in after 12 who was Piss&d and/or obviously not a soulie. Yes, the owners of the venue want the bar open all night to make their money.

Pete, Runs one of the better Soul nights in the South West, together with the delightful Cathy. He is a resident DJ at my All nighter that I recently set up in Gloucester. A true supporter of the scene and a nice bloke to go with it. I agree with the positive posts above from Torchboy and Mischief in particular. Mike

The 'Soul Suite'. Plays live acts, mainly Motown and some Soul but not Northern. Very small place and ok for a night out. Will miss by nights out at Manhattans on my future trips to Tenerife.

I held the first Allnighter in Gloucester for many many years on the 14th August. We had over 300 through the door with many travellers from all over, including Derbyshire, The Midlands, Manchester and throughout the South and South West. The DJ's were seasoned Noighter DJ's: Sean Chapman, Ted Massey, Nige Brown, Des Parker plus other quality local and regional DJ's. The next one will be on january 29th 2010 with the second room being DJ based rather than a strict music policy. DJ's lined up so far are: Mick H, Neil Rushton, John Weston, Killa, Sean, Des, etc and one or two more guest DJ's. For those of you that came, Ian Included I think you will share with me that the venue is superb and the music in the Main room from a Northern Perspective was spot on. The second room was Motown and Club soul classics. I will not be doing that next time as indicated above, as felt that it attracted a too diverse crowd. I want to see the venue include people who are happy to move between both rooms rather than stick in the same room all night and hope that by having two Soul Rooms one playing more mainstream nighter music and the other allowing DJ's to play what they want--- from a soul perspective of course. Hope to see some more of you from OOP North at the next one. Plans also for 2 others next year, in May and November. Got the scope for more If I want to run more. Mike

If it was taken off the original then it cannot IMVHO be regarded as OVO. It has been released, unlike some of the Kent releases that were not previously issued.

Totally agree. One that comes immediately to mind is Joe Simon and 'When'.

Do not allow Boots at Riverside and expect all DJ's to respect that. There are enough knpwledgeable people at the venue to Sniff out anyone going against the venue policy of OVO. Anyone caught doing so, does not get an invite to DJ again.

Went to a do' in Gloucester on saturday night. Advertised as a handbag soul night and a second Modern room. The place was rammed and in the main room were 2 DJ's playing who I have been told previously they sold their records. There were lots of Soulies in attendance , all seeming to enjoy themselves. Mel Britt came on and I said to someone I knew " Thats a big record" Reply "Its a CD". I have no problem in that , as such as the promoter is honest and upfront about what you get. My point is that People do not seem to worry anymore what is played and with a nicer venue they will be attracted to those venues, rather than to some of the traditional Northern venues. The Ladies, will generally go for a plusher venue. Maybe a reason why venues are closing . Got to say the Modern room was spot on, lots of 12" Vinyl and authentic sounds. Although not the time to offload ones vinyl, I do wonder sometimes whether to copy them all onto CD's.Perhaps not!!
